"Returns have spiked since Microsoft's July warranty extension announcement, and the once super-efficient service center is groaning under the strain, which translates into ever-longer wait times.
"'It took about six weeks to get a new 360 back,' says Eduardo Gabrieloff, 'and when it arrived it was broken. It took another six weeks to get another machine, and I spent hours on the phone with support. ... Finally I wrote an email to Steve Ballmer.'"

"The slow performance has led some to question how invested Microsoft really is in the high-definition disc battle. 'I think the player was done to show a commitment to HD DVD, but it isn't really strategic to the Xbox, because you can't play games off it,' Enderle said. 'The HD DVD player is a one-time sale of a piece of hardware. It's kind of like selling a joystick - they like selling joysticks, but if they had their druthers they'd rather sell a couple games, because that's pure profit.'"

The slimlined PS2 even saw a resurgence of third-party support once the PS3 proved such a difficult platform, and as we look back now at the vast and sprawling sea of Platinum Collections under the PS2 banner, there's a gold mine (well, Platinum mine) of gaming value to be had."
