This is good television - it's just not the weekly dose of Marvel Universe worldbuilding awesome-sauce that it keeps acting like it's just about to be.
Agents of SHIELD
Last week's much-hyped episode could charitably be called a letdown, so the logical follow-up is that this week's episode is probably one of the best thus far.
Unlike the show, I won't keep you waiting for the stuff you really want to know.
The Midseason Cliffhanger, wherein it appears we will finally find out... how much longer it will take to find out what happened to Agent Philip Coulson.
"Last week's episode" of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was a real winner. Unfortunately, by the laws of episodic television that means it's likely to be immediately followed by something less than a winner.
The first few minutes of The Well are a crystallization of the very, very bad show I'd originally worried Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" would wind up being.
My question about Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s erratic early episodes was never really "Will this get better?" My question was "Will this get better... in a way that retroactively makes the earlier stuff better as well?"
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. comes back after a one-week break with an episode that's not quite up to the standards of the "Whoa! This suddenly got A LOT better!"
The series that proves you don't need to look like a million bucks so long as you can deliver a sense of wonder - as in, "I wonder which sliver of Avengers movie continuity or Marvel Universe arcana will make a teasing verbal cameo this time!"
