You'll be able to customize your Super Smash Bros. character by altering their special attacks, and equipping items.

Nintendo has updated its official Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS website with a new "how to play" page, which goes into a bit of detail on how we'll be able to customize our characters in the upcoming fighter. First and foremost, before anyone yells "IMBA!" it is worth noting that these customization will be banned in the "With Anyone" online game mode (including both the "For Fun" and "For Glory" game modes), and thus can only be used in local multiplayer, and when playing with friends (although they can also be turned off in these game modes).

Players will be able to use "Custom parts" to slightly alter the way their character fights in three separate ways. The first way is to directly alter a character's special moves. In the example below, you can see that Mario's standard special attack (his fireball) can be altered to become a "fast fireball" or a "fire orb".

Next up, the game will feature equip-able items, which can be collected at random while playing the game's various game modes (in what we would assume to be a similar way to how trophies and stickers are collected in Brawl). A character can wear up to three pieces of equipment, which each have both upsides and downsides.

Finally, character's headgear and outfits can be altered via a third kind of custom part, though at this point, this kind of customization seems to only be limited to the Mii Fighter characters.
