Who is The Escapist?

The Escapist ( is a two time Webby Award winning video game related website and the exclusive home of Zero Punctuation. We strive to be at the leading edge of expression and entertainment, and celebrate the contemporary video gaming lifestyle. We also strive to engage our loyal and fast growing community with special events and promotional contests. One of our most popular community events occurs this month, and we'd like to formally introduce to you: 2010 March Mayhem: Developer's Showdown.

What is March Mayhem: Developer's Showdown?

March Mayhem: Developer's Showdown features 64 developers in a bracketed elimination-style tournament. They will go head-to-head through 6 rounds, hoping to earn enough votes from our community and take home the March Mayhem title! We have found that the developers that rally their communities to participate do the best in March Mayhem. By rallying their fans, Turbine has won March Mayhem two years in a row. Getting your community involved doesn't take a lot of work; all you need to is ask for their support and then watch the passion of your loyal community get to work!

In order to participate, voters must sign up for their free Escapist account at Rules and explanation about March Mayhem can be found here: Each voting round lasts approximately 48 hours. In the event of a tie, voting will continue for another 24 hours or until there is a clear winner. Below is the schedule of the rounds:

  • Round 1 - March 17th - 19th at 12:00PM EST
  • Round 2 - March 22nd - 24th at 12:00PM EST
  • Round 3 - March 25th - 27th at 12:00PM EST
  • Round 4 - March 29th - 31st at 12:00PM EST
  • Round 5 - April 1st - 4th at 12:00PM EST
  • Round 6 - April 5th - 8th at 12:00PM EST

Why should you get your community involved?

The answer is simple: free brand awareness for you and your games for very little of your time. For each advancing round, more people will see your brand and the focus will increasingly be on those developers that make it to later rounds. Last year, many Mayhem participants had never even played a Turbine game, so Turbine gave out free 14 day trials to people who wished to try the game out. Talk about great PR! Relic (a 12 seed last year) took down Blizzard (a number 1 seed) by reaching out to their community and bringing in worldwide support, increasing awareness for their Warhammer and the Dawn of War series. The bottom line: Communities other than your own will get a chance to see what you have to offer them. Our community is full of gamers, and during March Mayhem our community grows exponentially as new users from every walk of gaming life register and participate. March Mayhem shows the community what developers and games are out there that they might have otherwise been unaware of. Last year, we received 2.5 million page views on our March Mayhem pages alone. Wouldn't you like your brand to be part of some of those page views?

How to get your community involved:

You can do just about anything to get your community involved:

  • Blogs
  • User groups
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Community forums
  • Launcher or Patcher

The only thing you cannot do to get your community involved is offer a direct reward for winning March Mayhem. Doing this will automatically eliminate you from the tournament, regardless of the developer or round. Winners are determined by the number of votes they received from users during each round. Stirring the loyalty of your fans and getting them involved is the key to winning March Mayhem.
