I have a rather unique taste in music sure I listen to Avenged Sevenfold some classic rock too like Metallica, Rolling Stones (Love Gimmie Shelter!) and so on...I also listen to bands that are...for the most part unknown in North America. Leaves Eyes, Nightwish from Finland, Within Temptation from the Netherlands...I wanna know if anybody here listens to them or any bands like em....

ight im out.

Umm... Nightwish is pretty good. Anyone heard of Streetlight Manifesto? They're pretty popular in Illinois.

Nightwish sucks and everyone in Washingon but me listens to them, they're not unknown.
I dunno if anyone's heard of them but I kind of liked Hocus Crocus. 80's metal band that rather than singing yoddled.

Eve 6 got back together in the later part of last year. They're alright.

And I've heard of Nightwish!

I love Nightwish, A7X, and Within Temptation, I have listened to both for years.

I will throw a few more unknowns out there that I like:

Angra (Prog Metal)
Royal Hunt (Prog Metal)
The Vanden Plas (Prog Metal)
Sonata Artica (Prog Metal) (At least in the Americas they are fairly unknown)
House of Lords (Prog Metal)
Edguy (Prog Metal)
Celldweller (Industrial/Electronica)
Asian Kung-Fu Generation (J-Pop)
Flow (Unique defies categorization J-Pop)
Wumpscut (Hard Industrial)
Electric Frankenstein (Indie Alternative Rock/Power Metal)
Basshunter (Nerd Tech)

I could keep going and going.

A fellow Ska fan! Streetlight is good, do you still listen to Catch 22? There are loads of bands out there that no one has heard of but worth hearing. One of my favorites in high school was The Gadjits who were out of Kansas City, MO. Though, they fell apart over time the two brothers formed a new group called The Architects.

My favorite band though is The (International) Noise Conspiracy from Sweden. The lead singer is from another favorite defunct band, Refused.

Yeah, I wouldn't call Nightwish an unknown band. Even here in SC people know about them.

In addition to the old shit I listen to, there are several bands I love that few people seem to know of.

-3 Inches of Blood: Brutal Heavy Metal

-Children of Bodom: Death/Power Metal Hybrid

-Manowar: American Heavy Metal

-Iced Earth: Progressive Metal(?)

-Nile: Death Metal from Hell (Hailing from my own home state!)

-Winter Solstice: Christian Metalcore (I'm not Christian, but they are awesome)

-Norther: Melodic Death/Power Metal hybrid

-Sonata Arctica: Power Metal

Metal is a very broad category, apparently.

There's a slick indie Brit band called the Automatic Automatic that, I swear to god, nobody on earth but me has listened to.

Yes it is. Christian Metalcore? Thats a new one. It seems Nightwish isn't as unknown as I thought...they certainly are unknown in West Virginia but....the only rock the vast majority of the state listen to is country I HATE country.

Metal is a very broad category, apparently.

It's probably the most diverse genre of music.

Pretty much every metal band named so far in this thread are very well known within metal circles. Nightwish and Sonata Arctica are fucking huge in Finland for example. Angra are very big in Brazil. Iced Earth are famous almost everywhere and are pretty mainstream (they opened for Metallca at Wembley about a month ago for example), 3 Inches Of Blood, again pretty mainstream, Edguy (who aren't prog for fucks sake) are huge in Germany and do very well in Mainland Europe.

I guess the only coming close to vague metal band i've listened to was "Guardians Of Time". Power Metal band from Norway Released two albums that didn't sell very well and broke up about a year ago I think. Don't hear much about them on the metal message boards I frequent.

Code_Wizard named a few genuinely vagueish bands. Although to be honest, unless you're a proper music nut who scours the Internet and back alley CD dealers to purposely seek out obscure stuff, you probably don't listen to anything remotely close to "vague"

are you having a laugh?
almost all of them are highly known especially since a number of them are on the nuclear blast label

Bands im convinced are that wee bit underground

Melt Banana (jpop)
Metal Safari (a japanese pantera, basically)
The Gothsicles (im not sure how unknown they are online, they do techno songs based on old video games, like the Contra Konami Code)
Des Row (they did Daikenkai on DDR extreme, i looked into them a little more and they've done quite a bundle of good stuff. j-rock)

As far as unknown goes I'd say Ulver (?), Grave Digger (Power Metal), Spiral Architect (Prog. Metal), Arcturus (?), Dragonheart (Brazilian power metal band, not DragonForce).

At least people don't talk about them here, but then again everyone around here listens to hip-hop and the like...

Opeth - Maybe too popular to mention, but so good.
Hella - Awesome instrumental guitar and drums freakout.
Lightning Bolt - Awesome drum and bass noise band.
Vader - Polish black metal.
Heavy Heavy Low Low - Somewhat well known grindcore band.
An Albatross - Up and coming grindcore band, I've known the guitarist for years, he lives in my town.
Television - Art rock band most peope seem to have overlooked.
Necrophagist - The most technical of death metal.
Silencer - Singer sawed his freaking arm off

The moral of the story is you can never really say "this band is unknown" on an internet forum. You can get away with that stuff when you're chatting amongst mates, but on the internets is a different kettle of fish.

If you like Nightwish go check out Lacuna Coil. Personally I'm not a massive fan of either of them.

Nah. Catch-22, even with the same ex-singer, they're just not as good. I've never heard of the rest of them. I'll have to check them out.

Everyone says Blood Stain Child sounds like a Japanese Children of Bodom...

Their older material was similar but much less so on the last 2 albums (Mozaiq & Idolator).

I assume your talking about Sonata Artica, not even close to power metal, if anything its just "Metal" with no sub-genre, but I choose to put it in prog because a lot of the songs sound very prog-ish even if the band isn't prog it self.

A couple of the best underground metal bands around -

Kingsize Blues - A British metal band from Harrow, London (UK) - only released an EP so far, but I can't stress enough how much they're worth listening to. Dependency is one of the best metal songs around, easily on par with anything from Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets.

Wintersun - Extreme power metal, not too far from Children of Bodom

powerglove baby, video game metal at its finest.

but in all seriousness im more into hardcore, punk, and underground hip hop. but when i do listen to metal its usually death such as cattle decapitation or metalcore (parkway drive, born of osiris), experimental metal (http://myspace.com/harlots - unbelievable talent). also check out http://www.myspace.com/johnnytruant one of the finest bands to grace my ears ever and from my home town too!

Field Music/ Maximo Park / The Futureheads. Trio of Northern England art-pop bands from Sunderland and/or Newcastle. Most people probably have heard a Futureheads song, such as their cover of Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love', but Maximo Park are less known and Field Music are much less known (and my favourite of the three).

I mostly listen to Led Zeppelin and RHCP, but if i have to mention one people don't know or hear much about, its Marc Pullen.

Ill bet my right Arm that nobody here, have even heard about him, cause hall his music is free, and only aviable from his webside.

It a shame really, he's one of the most talented musicians if have yet to hear, especially his techno-classical and metal stuff.

If you are into that music, his webside is here, http://www2.fanaticalproductions.net:8080/ .

You have to look at it this way, just because they're new to you, doesn't mean they're unpopular.
When I first heard of Lordi, and bought their CD in '06, they had already become a wordwide phenomenon. When I bought a few Behemoth CDs to see what they were like almost a year ago next week, they were already under scrutiny by the Polish Prime Minister or whomever runs that place.

I saw someone noted Vader, Preistess, and Necrophagist. Those are far from unheard of. I'm just using them as an example however, don't feel singled out if you listed them.
I think someone listed Our Lady Peace? I've been hating them for far too long for them to be unheard of.

You have to keep in mind that human's think very relatively. "I've never seen them before, others must not have."
And that mindset shows up ALOT in redneck lands. Trust me, I'm from Missouri.

You know what's funny? Most of the "Bands almost nobody knows about" are quite popular here in Europe, except for the Japanese ones, though I can understand that not a lot of people like loads of songs that sound almost the same and feel like Anime or JRPG intro music.
I personally would expect Nightwish to disappear sooner or later, since they lost a lot of wht made them good when their original singer Tarja Turunen left (or was asked to leave). Her solo CD is great though.

Some of the less-known bands/musicians I can think of are:
Jonathan Coulton (I only know him because he made the end credits song for Portal, and then found out that his other songs are great, too)

Krypteria (German Gothic/Rock/Metal band. I don't know if they have been officially assigned a genre by now. They bands that could be best compared to them would be Evanescence and pre-Amaranth Nightwish, but their particular style is quite special and something I haven't heard before. Some songs by them:
Victoriam Speramus
Somebody Save Me)

Gregorian (a British Choir specialised in turning pop songs into - well... gregorian style:
Losing My Religion (originally by REM)
Nothing Else Matters (originally by Metallica)
But they also make some songs of their own:
A Weakened Soul)

There are some more not-very-well-known bands, but I think they can as well stay less- or even unknown, Like Leaves Eyes, Eyes Of Eden, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation and other "hey, we have a female lead singer trying to copy Tarja, but all she can bring up is a weird kind of trying to do more with her voice than physically possible for her" Goth Rock bands.
Original Nightwish, now Tarja, Evanescence, Xandria and Krypteria all have their own style and their songs stay within the limits of their (or their respective lead singer's) voice, and at least those five actually succeed(ed) in making good songs.

No.... they're power metal with some very mild prog elements, although Unia had some stronger prog elements to it, more varied song structures and a bit more diverse, they're still mainly a power metal band. Don't know how you could class them as anything else. He also called Edguy prog, which they most definitely aren't, again they're power and the last album had them taking a more hard rock direction.
