A fellow Ska fan! Streetlight is good, do you still listen to Catch 22? There are loads of bands out there that no one has heard of but worth hearing. One of my favorites in high school was The Gadjits who were out of Kansas City, MO. Though, they fell apart over time the two brothers formed a new group called The Architects. My favorite band though is The (International) Noise Conspiracy from Sweden. The lead singer is from another favorite defunct band, Refused. |

Yes it is. Christian Metalcore? Thats a new one. It seems Nightwish isn't as unknown as I thought...they certainly are unknown in West Virginia but....the only rock the vast majority of the state listen to is country I HATE country. |

It's probably the most diverse genre of music. Pretty much every metal band named so far in this thread are very well known within metal circles. Nightwish and Sonata Arctica are fucking huge in Finland for example. Angra are very big in Brazil. Iced Earth are famous almost everywhere and are pretty mainstream (they opened for Metallca at Wembley about a month ago for example), 3 Inches Of Blood, again pretty mainstream, Edguy (who aren't prog for fucks sake) are huge in Germany and do very well in Mainland Europe. I guess the only coming close to vague metal band i've listened to was "Guardians Of Time". Power Metal band from Norway Released two albums that didn't sell very well and broke up about a year ago I think. Don't hear much about them on the metal message boards I frequent. Code_Wizard named a few genuinely vagueish bands. Although to be honest, unless you're a proper music nut who scours the Internet and back alley CD dealers to purposely seek out obscure stuff, you probably don't listen to anything remotely close to "vague" |

Metal), Arcturus (?), Dragonheart (Brazilian power metal band, not DragonForce). At least people don't talk about them here, but then again everyone around here listens to hip-hop and the like... |

You can get away with that stuff when you're chatting amongst mates, but on the internets is a different kettle of fish. If you like Nightwish go check out Lacuna Coil. Personally I'm not a massive fan of either of them. |

I assume your talking about Sonata Artica, not even close to power metal, if anything its just "Metal" with no sub-genre, but I choose to put it in prog because a lot of the songs sound very prog-ish even if the band isn't prog it self. |

Most people probably have heard a Futureheads song, such as their cover of Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love', but Maximo Park are less known and Field Music are much less known (and my favourite of the three). |

Those are far from unheard of. I'm just using them as an example however, don't feel singled out if you listed them. You have to keep in mind that human's think very relatively. Most of the "Bands almost nobody knows about" are quite popular here in Europe, except for the Japanese ones, though I can understand that not a lot of people like loads of songs that sound almost the same and feel like Anime or JRPG intro music. Some of the less-known bands/musicians I can think of are: Krypteria (German Gothic/Rock/Metal band. I don't know if they have been officially assigned a genre by now. They bands that could be best compared to them would be Evanescence and pre-Amaranth Nightwish, but their particular style is quite special and something I haven't heard before. Some songs by them: Gregorian (a British Choir specialised in turning pop songs into - well... gregorian style: There are some more not-very-well-known bands, but I think they can as well stay less- or even unknown, Like Leaves Eyes, Eyes Of Eden, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation and other "hey, we have a female lead singer trying to copy Tarja, but all she can bring up is a weird kind of trying to do more with her voice than physically possible for her" Goth Rock bands. |

No.... they're power metal with some very mild prog elements, although Unia had some stronger prog elements to it, more varied song structures and a bit more diverse, they're still mainly a power metal band. Don't know how you could class them as anything else. He also called Edguy prog, which they most definitely aren't, again they're power and the last album had them taking a more hard rock direction. |

I have a rather unique taste in music sure I listen to Avenged Sevenfold some classic rock too like Metallica, Rolling Stones (Love Gimmie Shelter!) and so on...I also listen to bands that are...for the most part unknown in North America. Leaves Eyes, Nightwish from Finland, Within Temptation from the Netherlands...I wanna know if anybody here listens to them or any bands like em....
