I am not into metal at all, and I love Nightwish. West Coast Rap is my music of choice, although I seem to be the only one on these forums... User was put on probation for: My girlfreind is so damn annoying!. (3 days) |

I have never heard of Nightwish. Not a metal head though. |
Paperboy Posts: 17 Joined: 16 Mar 2008 | Stealers Wheel are probably the most obscure bands I listen to, they are all quite famous at least Mama Cass and Velvet but I have yet to hear a person mention them except Dylan Moran. Think there was a Farscape episode called 'Dream a little Dream' or something though. |

Paperboy Posts: 27 Joined: 20 Mar 2008 | yeah, nightwish and arch enemy, pretty huge, not metallica huge, but if you listen to metal(and usually even if you dont) you'll know of them, another good band(if you like black metal) is nattefrost, its his solo effort from carpathian forest |

That's a really good album. One of those classic albums that will just slide through the woodwork with the super-saturation of bands. There are a bunch of things that I've read on this list that I know of, a lot of them are really good too. Here's a few of mine: The Protomen- A band that does a rock opera based on Megaman. Amazing! I could list a ton of others, but I only have so much patience with myself to think of them |

Paperboy Posts: 27 Joined: 20 Mar 2008 | in canada(where protest the hero are from) theyre pretty big, theyre on much music all the time, im not really a fan of metalcore or any core though, i find you get a decent growler and a bad singer or a decent singer and a bad growler, but protest are kinda progressive which is cool, i liked old trivium anyone heard anything or any bands by dan swano? hes a genius, made his album moontower, nightingale, edge of sanity? theyre all great, he also produced the new novembers doom album and did guest vocals on the new winds album |

KMFDM's not unkown. I know a lot of people that know 'em. Infact, I just bought 4 CD's of their's the other day. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1696 Joined: 1 Feb 2008 | Oh, thank you! You have all just made me very happy! I was sitting thinking of the most obscure band I love (The Weird-ohs/Silly Surfers, a studio project by Gary Usher who was the writer/producer behind pretty much all the surf/hot-rod rock of the mid-60's) and wishing I had that album. Generally I only see it available on collector's sites for $75-$200, but I found one one Ebay for $30 and I'm about ready to crawl over the back of my chair with uncontrolled glee. And I would have never even thought to look if it weren't for this thread. |

I like a bunch of European metal bands that most of you will have heard of, but my favorite of all is Freedom Call, which is a German power metal outfit that no one's heard of. They've released several albums, but if you wanna get into them, start with the Eternity album and then try the others. Damn I wish Freedom Call would tour in America. |

A foreign band that I adore(Not in English though) A German Folk Metal band :: Subway To Sally And quite possibly my favorite band ever due to there sheer variety. Ranging from slow to fast, and with a shitload of instruments A Spanish Metal/Folk/Whatever they are :: Mago de Oz |

amen to that, back in the 80s/90s when you had groups like boogie down productions, ice-t, public enemy, nwa, grandmaster flash and the furious five, disposable heroes of a hiphopcrasy and such, rap was actually good, once the labels looked at record sales, producers took over and we got the era of guns n' hoes and mad duckets as for KMFDM they're very well known, they kept the waxtrax label alive for a few years, they're songs have been prominently featured in more than one film and really capt k has kinda lost his focus, last few albums since xtort have been kinda the same, tho i do like my copy of naive with the orange cover, aka the long out of print one with the banned track that got them to remix the song and call it "the fark mtv mix" cause mtv ratted them out about the sample tho i did have a laugh at someone trying to tell me what KMFDM stood for, they insisted i was wrong that i didn't stand for Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid, they said it meant kill mother farking depeche mode, i even grabbed one of my kmfdm cds and showed it to them before they believed me and even then they didn't on that vein, slick idiot, who is gunter and en esch from kmfdm band after they left and honestly way better than kmfdm. and my personal fav version of what kmfdm stands of is kylie minogue fans don't masturbate |

Yeah! Animal Alpha are great! Also, try Sonic Boom Six, a great UK ska/reggae/dub band. Loves them, I do. Oh yeah, WARNING: SHAMELESS BAND PLUG... My band, Killer B I can guarantee none of you have heard of us... =D |

Dennis' hardcore screams are the best I've heard @cleverlymadeup - Wow, you certainly like your EBM/Aggrotech! Me too. I like most of the outfits in that list One of my fav obscure bands is Duel Jewel, who are sort of JROCK. I don't know, they just make killer tunes. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 373 Joined: 11 Jan 2008 | My fav band is 'Suede' or 'London Suede' in America. Check up the songs So Young, New Generation, Trash, She's in Fashion and We Are the Pigs for them at their best. Many bands from the 90's weren't recognised for the grundge and Britpop movements. |

/agree It's global, though. When I see a 'hot black chick shaking her booty', I sigh out loud. People using samples that are over 15 years old, just rambling utter crap over it (I'm looking at you, 'J-Lo', don't screw up the Beatnuts, or that Javine or something girl, screwing over Ante Up). And then there's 'singers' like Mika... (seemingly, but not to me) catchy pop tunes, but that's just it. No content at all. Just him saying 'Big girls you are beautiful' 200 times over. We need a modern day Bob Dylan to turn music into an art again, nowadays it's just shitty merchandise in a worthless market. Thankfully, there's indie for that. I'll just name a few random bands that are in my music folder, now (not all are from indie labels, but meh): Okkervil River, Two Gallants, Hoax Funeral, Gravenhurst, Blood Meridian, The Black Keys, Andrew Bird, Malcolm Middleton, Great Lake Swimmers, and I could go on for a while with random bands. Most of these bands have lyrics that actually mean something, or tell us a story with a morale, often disguised in metaphors. But when I see all the metal-fans here, I doubt these bands will appeal to you guys :p Oh, and concerning rap/hip-hop: DJ Format, teamed up with Abdominal. Catchy tunes with a guy rapping about the most random stuff ever. But damn, is he good at it. That, and a music clip with a bunch of people in animal suits breakdancing, just search youtube for 'We Know Something You Don't Know'. |

yeah, i kinda got disinterested in rock/alternative/punk/metal cause it all started sounding the same, and industrial and all it's subgenres have always pushed the envelope a bit and tried new things and new sounds my mom's bf who is a jazz fan, i won't say a jazz snob cause he's not, really likes a lot of industrial and subgenres cause of it's originality, he tried once to get my vnv standing/burning empires on a deal for a laptop till i told him it was extremely rare the other thing is it's a genre of music that is really amazing, filled with great bands and it totally over looked by the mainstream. which also means you get a lot of diversity and new sounds as well as artists willing to experiment. in "mainstream" you don't have a lot of that. there's a few bands, tool comes to mind, that really changes things around and experiments. most bands stick to the same song over and over and don't deviate from their sound too much, which breaks my heart when i hear a great new band and their second album is absolute crap cause it's the same as the first. tho i will say i've gotten into listening to more old school metal lately, i blame guitar hero for that and seeing gwar while wearing a white suit in the pit. and a fun side note, if you ever want to see vnv nation playing at their tip top, go to their toronto shows, after having fun and being REALLY rowdy with the germans (and one) and doing an impromptu cover of personal jesus in the middle of cheesy, Ronan comes out and declares "so i see you had some fun with the germans, well we're from england and consider yourselves liberated" and it went on from there. they actually played standing for us, which they hadn't played on the tour up till then and caused us to be even more rowdy, which was pretty hard at that point and for anyone that sees them live and is fortunate enough to have them play forsaken, please do NOT cheer until AFTER the sample at the end, it's part of the reason they hardly play it in north america |

The next least popular band would be Symphony X, but they do occasionally make a magazine page here and there. Appear to be fairly big in Europe though. After them would be Dream Theater, even though they have a larger fan base in Asia. After that is Rush, who's probably considered too popular to fit on this thread... even though they still aren't in the mother******* ***dam Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Oh, I also enjoy listening to the Steve Howe Trio. That guy's a phenomenal guitarist; a true master of his instrument. Has his roots back in the days of 1970's Yes and 1980's Asia. His present day band, however, is relatively unknown. |
