my god, he's living disproof to my belief that no-one alive actually types like that... (no offense to Spasmoses, i don't know what he's like as a person, but he just shot all my preconceptions in the head...)

i feel hurt...

I liked Dragonforce, before they were cool, then i got stereotyped as 'one of those Dragonforce fans' and now i listen in secret... for fear of the wrathful anti-fan...

Well I know a band that were almost unheard of outside of Finland, until they got a huge break from the Max Payne series.

Poets of the Fall. I dont know exactly how to class them, maybe contemporary rock? I dunno.

Aberdeen City is a band that I believe is rather unknown. But they've been getting alot of attention lately due to the use of one of their songs in a Crysis Physics video thats been making the rounds on Youtube lately.

Nightwish sucks and everyone in Washingon but me listens to them, they're not unknown.
I dunno if anyone's heard of them but I kind of liked Hocus Crocus. 80's metal band that rather than singing yoddled.

Did you mean Focus? With their famous (if a little annoying) track Hocus Pocus?

Does anyone know the German bands "Die Ärzte" or "Böhse Onkelz"? (Die Ärzte have been around for over twenty years now or so, I think that that is pretty impressive for a band that only has 2 1/2 countries as an audience.

Umm... Nightwish is pretty good. Anyone heard of Streetlight Manifesto? They're pretty popular in Illinois.

A fellow Ska fan! Streetlight is good, do you still listen to Catch 22? There are loads of bands out there that no one has heard of but worth hearing. One of my favorites in high school was The Gadjits who were out of Kansas City, MO. Though, they fell apart over time the two brothers formed a new group called The Architects.

My favorite band though is The (International) Noise Conspiracy from Sweden. The lead singer is from another favorite defunct band, Refused.

Stop Drop N Skank is a really good ska band

Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine. The take hard rock and rap tunes and turn them into lounge songs. They're HILARIOUS.

Gogol Bordello and The Go! Team seconded. Not really a fan of Explosions in the sky and don't know the other stuff (apart from Primus, who I admire but don't really like) but I love Gogol Bordello. Awesome band live.

Anyway my contributions to the "I'm more underground than you" thread are:

The Mad Capsule Markets - Japanese dance/metal/punk/ska. Pure, undiluted AWESOME.

The Living End - Fucking great Australian rock band who flit between genres whenever the hell they feel like it. They've also got one of the best guitarists on Earth. Don't believe me? Take a look - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9uxWT3nokI)

2 Many Djs/Soulwax - 2 Many Djs created mash-up dance music. Check out As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 2 for one of the best party albums ever made. Soulwax are a wierd indie/dance hybrid that are also well worth a listen.

Justice - The spiritual successors to Daft Punk. Like funky house music with big, chunky bass-lines? Of course you do. And if not, why not? Anyway, check em out.

Mastodon - The best metal band of the past five years. Awesome, awesome, awesome band.

Mr Scruff - Jazzy, mellow dance music with playful lyrics and great sample mixing.

Pendulum - Drum N' Bass successors to the prodigy. Like The Prodigy? You'll love this lot...

Reuben - Heavy rockers with a knack for catchy melodies. It's kind of emo, but without the annoying voices or suckage.

Sikth - Craziest metal band ever. Seriously - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARTvoqqn8U8 They've also got the best metal bassist I've ever heard.

I'm gonna leave it at that. And don't go telling me that you've all heard of all these bands because if you have I don't care. These are just great bands that are reasonably outside of the mainstream where I live (Glasgow, Scotland) to be classified as vaguely underground.

Turin Brakes. My favourite band. I have yet to say that name to anyone, and have them so much as say "yeah, that rings a bell, I think I've heard of them before".

So many heavy metal bands in this topic. You guys have pretty specific tastes, huh?

On the topic of new music, has anyone else heard of the new Judas Priest album "Nostradamus"? I only just got clued into its existance from some music sites and I was wondering if the info is legit.

Really don't know any "unknowns", I guess Dragonforce would count as one if you're in America. Inhuman Rampage is such a sweet album. 50 times better than Sonic Firestorm.

Oh, wait! Rammsteinn! Now that's some good relatively unknown German Death Metal.

@xblade0: I've been listening to Rammstein for the past few years, and Dragonforce is not quite unknown in the US since Guitar Hero has a few of their songs. BTW, Rosenrot is the shit!

Oh, & King Diamond & Mercyful Fate

I like the Absence. They're a band from where I live, the guys are pretty nice and they're on Metal Blade. What more do I have to say other than they're pretty damn good.

The Black Dahlia Murder is a band I love, but I don't know a lot of people who know, or even like them.

Yeah, I listen to a lot of metal. Big whoop, wanna fight about it?

Lets see bands (and artists) no1 knows about, that should be easy for me.

Christian marclay - awesome experimental artist

Rufus Wainright - Awesome musician son of Loudon and brother of Martha i do not know about America or internationally but no1 in Melbourne knows him.

Blue King Brown - A world, reggae, funk sort of band from melbourne. The played with The Cat Empire.

Lightening Bolt - Noise Metal FTW

Lior - Australian acoustic artist. Strong following but not very well known.

Lesser known mbands and musicians i tend to like better than anyone well known or popular. I havn't even begun to list local bands. Such as my band the yesterdaydreamers. Ha how many people know that band :D.

Relatively unknown in America (though I know most choices will draw in people saying "I've heard of them, therefore they are not unknown):

Rammstein (German industrial with heavy metal influence)

Eric Johnson (guitar virtuoso, who is known in guitarist circles, but not much elsewhere, unless they've played GH3)

Flogging Molly (Irish folk rock)

Dropkick Murphies (see Flogging Molly, with some elements of Punk)

example generes include :

Bulgarian Surf
Romanian Gypsy-Metal
Spaghetti Eastern

Haven't checked out some of the others but I extremely fucking concur on The Hold Steady, "Boys and Girls in America" is probably one of the best albums I've ever heard.

For my own contributions, I don't "do" metal, I'm an Indie-Rock/Pop nerd. Though if you're from Canada, you probably know most of these as here they get radio play because of Canadian Content Regs.

- STARS, truly grand experimental baroque-pop (best albums are Heart and Set Yourself on Fire)
- Islands, fun Indie-pop from Montreal, only one album out right now.
- The New Pornographers, fairly well known in Canada, but a little under the radar in the US.
- SPOON, nice and witty Indie-Rock
- Rilo Kiley, Indie-Rock/Pop/Alt Country from California, lots of fun.
- Electric Six, wacky disco-rock and lots of songs about Dancing and Fire.
- Air, ambient electronica pop that sounds, well, Airy.
- Young Galaxy, a fun little indie-pop band from Montreal.
- The Whitest Boy Alive, wicked awesome guitar heavy indie rock from Sweden.
- Vampire Weekend, oddly enough not gothy emo or metal, they do weird indie-pop.
- Broken Social Scene, pretty big in Canada, but I don't know about the US, they just plain rock.

It does? Most people I talk to just stare at me blankly when I mention the name Rammstein.

I'm surprised no one has said anything about the German Krautrock movement in the late 60's all the way through the mid- late 70's. This movement gave us bands like Can, Kraftwerk, Faust, Neu!, Harmonia, Guru Guru, Ash-ra Temple, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Amon Düül II, La Dusseldorf, and many others. I'm sure some of you guys have heard some Can and Kraftwerk for they are the 2 bands who sold the most records of the bunch.

I second those who have mentioned Spoon, but must rail against the fact that nobody mentioned the Electric Prunes yet. They're one of the best CA psychedlic rock bands the 60's ever birthed, but I get nothing but blank stares anywhere I mention them. Distorted guitar and drums like Jefferson airplane, electric zither, all kinds of good stuff.

I must also raise mention of the Byrds, which while not anywhere near as unknown are criminally unlistened-to. It's not just Turn, Turn, Turn, people.

If I start listing bands I listen to, only one or two of the persons I talk to on a regular basis seems to have a clue to what I'm blabbing about.

The following bands are very underground, at least in Romania:

Gogol Bordello, gypsy punk
Kultur Shock, Gypsy punk- just like Gogol, only more diverse in it's repertoire
Subscribe, Hungarian Progressive
Karnivool, Australian Progressive
Era Ticalosilor, Romanian Hard-Core
Melting Carousel, Romanian Indie

I would also mention Opeth and Porcupine Tree as unknown bands in Romania, even if they are big outside, Sonic Syndicate.

Krypteria, Xandria and The Crest are fantastic. - All wierd european metal bands fronted by female fingers.

Anyone interested in Ska should look for Ska-P. Yes, I know they're quite a big band but no-one I talk to have ever heard of them...
