Not to be too intrusive, but I thought it would be interesting to see what the lot of you think of your lot in life. I don't mean your personal motto; this is what you tell other people so that they understand you better. What I mean is the think you tell youself as you fall asleep so you don't have nightmares (in my case, anyway). As I started this post, I might as well get da ball rollin'.

Anything done for the sake of another person is worth the cost.

Apologies to anyone who is tired of bullshit philosophy threads, but I thought this was interesting.

"Be true to yourself, and you'll be true to others."

Advice my grandfather passed on to me. I liked it, and try to live it everyday.

"Treat others how you would like to be treated."
It was said to me at a young age, and as i got older, i realised it was an important thing to remember.

"if you can sum up your life in a single sentence, then you had better hope that sentence is a damn good one"

I know I've heard someone else say that somewhere...

Philosophy is not about the realization, it's about the process.

i can guarantee that ones mine. Any similarities to other peoples are just proof that great minds think alike, seriously, i spent ages staring at the screen thinking "what IS my philosophy?", then this one hit me and i realised, i didn't have one.

"Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will."
~ Dr. Robert Anthony

this is one i like for everyday life.

There are two, for me. Both are family mottoes

"Never pass up the opportunity to do a good deed"

"In the end, only kindness matters."

I'll also throw in a good Joss Whedon one:

"If nothing we do matters, all that matters is what we do".

I take all of that to mean that if when I die, I've made a positive impact on others that will outlast me, I'm good. On a day-to-day basis, it's always a question of whether I'm a positive force in the universe. Basically, I'd suggest that everyone ask themself: if you were to not exist (be wiped from all existence; past, present, and future) would people be better off, or worse off, because of it?

Here's mine: I will do as I please. Whether I choose to do good or evil is my choice. You may choose to attempt to stop me. But I may choose to injure you. So consider this: Is it not better to ensure good is done, rather than provoke evil.

Its a 'treat others' and a 'fuck you world' philosophy' all in one.

The flaws of humanity are just a byproduct of evolution, as are the things we consider virtuous. There's no true good or evil; they're just social constructs. People act in self-interest mainly; while they don't set out specifically to harm, usually they are unable to see beyond the immediate repercussions of their actions.
I've also always felt that the best way to deal with social problems is to weed them out, one by one, and poke fun at them in an attempt to make people realize that they're bad and/or pay no attention to the people supporting them.

I dont live by it but it is an interesting idea

"If you cannot live above the law(Natural law not human) you must make up new laws or find refuge in madness" - Nietzsche

it is interesting that he said this because he spent the final 11 years of his life in insanity...it would be great to find out what law it was that drove him into madness... maybe it is too great for any one individual to think through..

Specifically, what I tell myself to let me sleep peacefully at night?

"There is very little that can be done about whether or not I will die in my sleep from a variety of potential causes, so I might as well sleep soundly in case I'm still alive in the morning and have to go to work."

It's a more rational variation on "F*** it. I'm tired."

"There are two levers in life: lever A and lever B... and sometimes you just gotta leave 'er be."

My father always throws that one at me when I don't know when to move on. ;-)

I try to live in a way such that, if I were watching myself in a video game or TV show, I would want me to live.

Before I go to sleep: "I'll do better tomorrow." (It's actually optimistic, not depressing)
What I remind myself of: "I have free will." (This is too easily forgotten)
Quote I try to live by: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." (Ghandi)

Or too easily refuted, depending on your viewpoint.

"If the man's a dumbass, kick him in the dick. If the man's a dick, kick him in the ass."

When I asked what this meant, the reply was "In the first case, he shouldn't be having kids, and in the second case, he should get a good ass kicking." I thought it was pretty valid =D

"You should have friends everywhere, even in hell"
-my granfather's life motto. He lived in government housing in spain he came up from nothing during the spanish civil war, and was childhood friends with the owner of one of the futbol clubs in Sevilla (Real Betis BTW) so he got free midfield tickets for any game. Just goes to show that it's not what you know, but who you know.

and one I came up with in the library at school:
"Hot chicks never have cute friends"

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

Jks, I'll write a serious one later...

I like this thread. I think mine would definitely have to be one of my favorite quotes ever, but just so happens to be from a great movie "The Count of Monte Cristo." And it goes a little something...like this...

"Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, and be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome: Do your worst, for I will do mine!"

I mind was broken a long time ago when I tried to find a rational AND humane view of life. There is no such thing. In order to find purpose, meaning, or value in life, one must abandon logic and reason and take a leap of faith. Since I am incapable of self-deception, I cannot take refuge in faith. Existence seems to be the only thing with inherent value, but the existence of living things are in constant conflict with each other.

"Nothing is true. Everything is permitted." is a good way to describe my view of the world. This does not mean that I am indifferent. I have my own modus operandi, but it is much too complex and broad to relate in a meaningful way.

However, some eastern philosophies, like Zen and Taoism have many things in common with my own MO.

This is about it for me too, but with added strains of "This shit ain't right, man."

You know, before I concentrated I thought I eas reading that 1984 "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength" line. Which is a funny motto to live by.
As for your motto it makes sense and its pithy so I don't think it's rubbish.

"how can you drink of my tea if you first do not empty your cup" - Lee Jun Fan (Bruce Lee)

"be like water my friend" - Lee Jun Fan

he didn't originally say either one but he was the most famous person most westerners attribute to him

both quotes are about keeping an open mind about everything in life and adjusting to what comes
