About the optimism/pessimism, has anyone else seen Pan's Labrynth? Aside from being an awesome movie, it really reveals something about your character. There is an ending that can be taken two ways, depending on your nature. The magical, happy ending, or the brutal, more logical ending. |

"its peanut butter jelly time" Why peanut, why butter, why jelly? here we see mans eternal struggle with the inherent commercialism of life, is all time doomed to be linked to such meagre objects? or is peanut butter jelly time a reward, an omen of better times to come, i would err for the latter if i had not come across this statement further in. "peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat" As we can see, violence permeates all realities based upon a material society, all such 'jellies' must come with a threat or motive, can we truly ever have peanut butter jelly without the baseball bat? or does the baseball bat make peanut butter jelly what it truly is? i fear that as a species we will never know. Seeking oneness with the universe, i sought more guidance among the greatest minds to be found.
I thought that such a simple query was easily answered, until i saw that it was in fact being posed by an owl... Does nature have a question towards mankind, is our link to the banana severed by the peanut butter jelly of our material reality? i thought perhaps we had merely been questioned by the owls, a constant symbol of impartial wisdom... until...
Here i realized that mankind had accountability to all of the natural world, not just the lofty birds whose high view i blamed for their harsh judgement, by the inevitable suspension of the partially obscured computer we can see that now nature has become dependant on our technology, but does not fully understand it (shown by the absence of perceivable data shown on the screen) To test my growing concern, i added cat, owl, peanut butter jelly, computer and baseball bat together As i saw, the result was disastrous, the cat leapt upon the owl, and only through he intervention with he baseball bat can man ever hope to regulate the unbalance he has incurred, proving the inevitable essential nature of the baseball bat. are we doomed, destined for sweet but nutty doom at the hands of our own creations? perhaps the owl could reveal the answer, but he has flown away... |

This is going to sound like an odd question, but why? If everyone dies, isn't that a reason to take life seriously while we're here, make our impact on the world rather than fading away in a blaze of hedonism? |

Not the world as a whole, but those around you certainly. And if you attempt at it, you can make an impact on more and more people. I only find your logic baffling because your standards (being inherently self-concerned) are likely to result in harm to other (purposefully or incidentally). What makes you right? What justifies harm to others in order to achieve your hedonistic ends? You can't argue that hedonism causes no harm. It can avoid causing harm in certain circumstances, but in others it's impossible. You decide to go get drunk, because it's fun for you, and come home at 3:00 in the morning, waking up your neighbors, how do you justify (in any way other than a repetition of "life's too short to live for others") your harm to other people? I realize that's an odd example (pulled from my own life), but it's emblematic of the problems with an outlook on life that says "I do what I want, and screw everyone else". You can be self-interested without being selfish. But a mindset that broaches no disagreement, that's entirely illogical, and hence anti-philisophical. Show me the world can't be changed. Show me that by doing what you want, you create more happiness for yourself than could be created in others by not being selfish. Hell, even show me that your happiness doesn't come at the expense of ill-effect to others, and I'll at least accept that you can make an argument that Ayn Rand-esque self-interest is good. Otherwise, accept that this isn't "the world can't be changed", and call it what it is: "I just want to do what makes me happy". Also, how do you know your standards are right, and everyone else is wrong? That seems like and oddly religious thing to say. |

I don't have an easy to sum up nutshell version with a cool quote life philosophy.
The closest I guess would be:
Think first.
Take accountability for yourself.
See all sides of a situation.
I try my best to remember those things at all times.
