I was just wondering about the internet phenomenon that is rickrolling, and the possible reasons it has become quite the popular internet meme.

So I open the questions to the internet culture savvy members of the escapist forums. Why is rickrolling so popular? BTW, I'm not looking for answers that entail "Cos its Rickrolling ROFL!", I actually want a good discussion to take place.

My theory: People actually secretly like Rick Astley.

I think its a way to piss people off. And it works.

I think that swift thing is him confessing to being 'I love MGG'. I base this on the Rick Roll being a video response to a video by Anonymous about raiding. Anyway, I wish I could make a constructive comment about the origins of this meme, but I suspect it was one of those ideas that happened to be in the right place at the right time.

I've been thinking of asking this question for a while, Swift rickrolling just brought the question up again.

As for Rick Rolls, I've found most memes become memes not because of any quality but because of repetition by early adopters. Eventually enough fall in lin for it to become a meme.

Actually I never even talked to MGG, or read any of his posts, everybody just makes him out to be some sort of legendary troll. I just hope to one day be remembered in the hallowed halls of Escapist history as a legend as well.

Well, from what I've seen of him (which isn't much), he wasn't so much of a troll as a prolific reviewer with terrible grammar and a five foot steel rod stuck quite some distance up his colon.

I got RickRolled 3 times on April Fools day. Which were my firsts. The first time I saw that vid a long time ago, I did not know what the commenters were talking about [being RR'd].

Anyway, as to what it means to Rickroll, where it says its an offshoot of 'duckrolling'. (For those who are a little unsure what people are talking 'bout here)

I think it's got to do people generally being dicks, and like Nugoo said, it was in the right place at the right time (most likely in a rabid forum, filled with idiots. Like, the kind even trolls think are stupid).
