Anyway, I think that if the people who hear the joke aren't offended then it's fine, but you shouldn't just be cracking them all the time and you should definitely make sure that the people you're telling the joke to aren't part of any militias who might get a sudden burst of inspiration from your slurs. |

Muckraker Posts: 237 Joined: 22 Jan 2008 | personally i think racial jokes are hylarious, i mean in this day and age anyone who tells a racial joke is either having a little fun or has no brains at all. i see them the same way i see the "i've been married" jokes, it's just a freaking joke based on an outdated idea that isn't serious and shouldn't be seen as such any longer. i think racial jokes the same way i think wrestlers are funny when they make fun of the town they're in, it's not like they actually think that and i find it extremely funny to hear people talk like that. plus most people are uncomfortable talking about race and usually the stuff that makes people uncomfortable is the funniest stuff. |

Most countries will have another country which they'll refer to as stupid and the jokes get recycled purely on that. Some of the larger countries even do it by states/counties. Hearing "You hear about the latest X invention? Waterproof Teabags" isn't really racist, just demeaning the country rather than the residents. And it's usually from two countries with neighbouring borders whose nationalities are very similar: Hence English/French. Exaggerating known facets of the race provides some humour, 'Americans have no knowledge of the world outside America' gives us the "Nova" myth, and combine it with the Chinese Histograms for "Bite the wax tadpole". The racist element comes in when races are given facets that demean them, or don't describe them. Do you know I've lived in England for a few decades and I've seen perhaps 2 people wearing a bowler hat in real life? Racist jokes condemn, non-racist jokes poke fun. |

But really, As long as the person knows you aren't completely serious, it should be fine. In my opinion, as long as the person doesn't take it to heart than it shouldn't be a problem. Although I would never insult someone's race that I didn't know. I'm part Irish (Somewhere down the line) And when one of my friends found out that I was, she kept cracking "Irish people are constantly drunk" Jokes and I didn't mind. I would advise that you know your limits, Because if it's a bad taste joke than chances are people will get offended purely because it is of bad taste. |

Ah! I LOVE Avenue Q. I really think that song rings true for everyone, but like I said I'm still really cautious. |
Beat Writer Posts: 180 Joined: 22 Feb 2008 | I don't subscribe to the 'as long as no-one was offended' line of thinking, there are a LOT of humourless people out there and I won't tread on eggshells because my life style choice priorities are different to theirs. Some examples of these choices are; I think 99.9% of all religions are idiotic, I give a 0.1% margin of error due to me not being a theologian and giving them a modicum of propriety. I think the importance placed on (mostly cultural) traditions create negative trappings that hold back advancement and push forward segregation. I think comedy is sacred and NOTHING is immune to it, something that offends me may be accessibly funny to someone else. Which brings me to my point, we have the intelligence to determine if the joke came from a hateful or malicious place, which is more about the issues of the speaker than the subject covered. Chris Rock, Bill Hicks and many others hit the skin colour topic with verbal jackhammers, but it's easy to see they do it with clarity, thought and the genuine desire to make EVERYBODY laugh, there are just as many whites who hate Chris Rock's "I love black people, but I hate niggers!" line as there are African Americans....(not counting Texas), but were these stand-up routines wrong? Many would say yes, many would say no, but they felt like they were written with an intelligent, free spirited audience in mind. |

Racism, like all other -isms, have a potential to hurt someone. You don't attack someone who is bound to be offended and you're careful around people you don't know. Common sense really. |
Muckraker Posts: 294 Joined: 13 Jan 2008 | Good points Fang. My personal opinion is that most of the racism I hear online isn't intended to insult a particular culture anymore, it's just become a standard insult over time. Take "Jew" for example, I hear this plenty online from little American kids who have picked it up from their elders and formed it as an insult to anyone pissing them off. Much like how the word gay became used to insult something you didn't like. I personally don't like this as although they may not really hate the culture/religion etc whose name their using. It's still insulting to have your culture/religion or sexuality used as reference point for being insulted. Racist jokes can promote this thinking in people. So the more unnecessary jokes we hear, the more 13-15yr olds (or those who are older but with a similar maturity level) will use Jew, Fag and Nigger as accepted terms. And I'm sick of hearing it. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1259 Joined: 29 Dec 2007 | The joke needs to be in good taste, for example: "You racist Jew!" is ok. If a joke will piss off more people than it will make laugh, then it's not the kind to tell. User received a three day ban for this post |

This is not the "tell your favorite race joke" thread!
I really want to know how people here feel about racial jokes.
