First of all, Happy ANZAC day to everyone in the antipodes.

Secondly, I hope to mark my return from exile in an attempt at play-by-post role-playing games by taking us all back in time to a battle that far too many people (in America at least) have forgotten (if I'm violating any kind of protocol let me know and I'll rectify it tomorrow or as soon as time permits).

19 May, 1941. Yugoslavia and the Greek mainland has fallen under the Axis juggernaut, but Allied forces on the small island of Crete continue to hold firm. Possession of this island gives the British a valuable naval and air base to continue operations in the seas of the Aegean and the skies of the Balkans. Capture by the Germans would provide a good jump-off point for further attacks on Cyprus and other areas in the Near East, as well as support for the ground offensive in Egypt. This will be the first large-scale airborne operation in history, as the dominance of the Royal Navy makes an fully amphibious landing impractical.

You can play as a Greek, Commonwealth, German or Italian soldier or sailor, or as a civilian caught in the middle of the conflict. Post your name, rank, personal gear and weapons and any other pertinent information. I'm gonna give a good bit of leeway in gameplay but I do have a few rules/suggestions.

1. Some knowledge of how armies operated and what tactics and equipment they were using in the summer of 1940 is to be expected (i.e. there's no SAS yet, and the AK-47 ain't been invented).
2. Overly exotic characters should be avoided. You can be NKVD agent from Texas if you want, but you'd better have a VERY GOOD reason for being in Crete.
3. Multiple characters are allowed, but interaction between them should be kept to a minimum (put them on different sides/nationalities/branches)

My character:

Name: Captian Adrastos Ioannides
Age: 32
POB: Hubbards, Nova Scotia, Canada
Nationality: Canadian/Greek
Languages spoken: Greek (native), English (native), Scots Gaelic, Spanish, some German
Role: Commander, B Company, 7th Greek Regiment, attached to the 14th Infantry Brigade (UK)
Location: Heraklion, Crete
Phyisical traits: small and sickly since childhood, but a fairly strong man on those occasions when he ain't sick or injured
Personality: reserved and somewhat absent-minded; an indecisive leader who can nonetheless show a great deal of initiative when such is called for. Cool headed in combat and good with a gun. Well liked by his men but not fully trusted by his superiors.
Weapons: Mannlicher-Schonauer 6.5mm M1903/14 Rifle, bayonet, .38 Webley & Scott Mark IV revolver; 14 rounds of rifle ammunition, 6 rounds for the pistol
Transportation: bicycle, would normally be issued a horse but none are available at the moment
Bio: Ioannides was born to a Scottish Canadian mother and a Cretan father in 1908. Raised in the backwaters of Nova Scotia, he worked on docks and fishing boats in the area until joining the Carlists in Spain during their civil war (though both a monarchist and a fairly devout Catholic, this was done more out of boredom than any religious or political convictions). Wounded by artillery after a few weeks in the field; no particularly auspicious combat record.

Releived from duty due to his wounds and a rather bad case of pneumonia (possibly Typhoid Fever). Lived for several years in England and Scotland, married, and returned to his native Greece in the early days of the Greco-Italian War. Fought in the Epirus sector with the 2nd Infantry Division, Greek First Army, and continued to fight on with a few dozen others when General Tsolakoglou ordered the army to surrender. Escaped the German encirclement and linked up with Austrailian troops at Thermopylae, fighting his way south with them until being evacuated from the mainland. Wounded twice during the campaign.

Arriving in Crete, he was assigned to the poorly-armed and poorly-trained 7th Regiment in the Heraklion Sector, assigned to protect the town itself as well the habour and beaches from any amphibious landings. His company consists of roughly 170 soldiers, 5 officers and 21 civilian volunteers (many with less than 15 rounds for their rifles), supported by a single Mle 1914 Hotchkiss machine gun.

Hmm, I think some more thought and we should finish the zombie one first.

Happy ANZAC day everyone!

Beh, too much work, especially cause I'm already doing the Zombie one. Maybe later.

I'll play, if this thing gets off its feet.

I'll be an ANZAC. Standard rations, with my Lee-Enfield (if possible, can I have a marksman variant?). I'll also have a Luger, something to remember that I took a life.

Personality-wise, I'm quiet and introverted, but will do my duties to my friends and allies, while not overly patriotic.

Edit Since this thing isn't gonna start soon, how 'bout you PM me when it does start, OP?

I would do it but
A: The zombie one isn't anywhere near finished.
B: I don't think I have adequate knowledge on how people acted or what hadn't been invented.

The former will be solved with time, and the latter you could help me out with perhaps?

It's just that we have waaay too many RP's alread lined up: The Thing, Cyberpunk, Steampunk, 30's mafia (which I really wouldn't mind doing), and a few others.

If we ever start this, I figure I'll be the devil's advocate and try and RP as a German officer, I've always wondered what it was like to be a Rommel.

I want in. But just wait for the Zombie RP to finish first.

On a side note: I had a plan for an RP of epic proportion but alas now Everyone wants to role play.

Same, I've already started writing up the 30's one a while ago (the reason I'm a little sore) complete with ultimate twist and character lists. Still I guess other people haven't had their turns yet. I want to see what Larenxis would have up her sleeve.

She has some to? maybe we should have a part of the forum dedicated to Role Play

And be like Gaia?! Perhaps not.
I still think the way we are doing it is fine. We have one at a time. At the end of the game we put down our ideas of games we've already writen up and we'll vote to see who's up. That's what happened for both the Warhammer one and the zombie. I think it works this way and we don't have all the argueing, tears shed over who's up and the cluster of RP threads on the forum.

I want in but can't decide on a guy. I know I want to be a ANZAC shooter or officer, hot-headed and fairly smart. Male 18 years old, good with a weapon but not close combat, likes to joke.

Hay I could be stompy's spotter, but as I said give me direction along ^ those lines or I will never make a decision. Also give the whole RP direction unless we want another RP like GEMS's. *looks at purple's giant spider*

But of course. I let Betty roam free for a while. Maybe I should rangle her back into her cave.

This is way too much, the next killing in the zombie thread has to be like 5 people or it will run over 50 pages.
Maybe if this one had a point to it, like a murder scenario (I like those ones.) this will sort of be like every other RP

Guy 1*Drinks _____*"Gee it's hot"
Guy2 *Shoots guy1 in face* "Not so hot now is it?"

But I shall think about it.
I'd much rather some type of general consensus on the matter of RP's.
Like a thread that votes on what the RP should be about. I would also agree to an RP rule of only one at a time. But that's just me, i'll only participate in one if there are two or three at a time.

It doesn't seem like a bad idea for one, I just know almost squat about it and I don't feel like writing much, which is mainly the reason behind my bland story posts in the Zombie thread. It annoys me that I can't write a decent descriptive short response. *Rages*

Oh well, I might play this, if I for some reason Die in the zombie thread than i will more than likely move to this one, or start a thread for deciding the next one, that is if Mr galt would be interested in such a thing. If not I would gladly play this.

Why don't we use this thread as the deciding point. I don't think Mr Ciarog has planned this thing through, complete with twists and turns while some of us Galt, me, Larenxis, have been painstakingly writing out a few. Sorry, to be a kill joy, but two RP's running at once could make things a bit cluster fucked and could annoy a few people.

Well that would require for us to make a list...

What do you propose we include in said list Mr rain?

We would have to wait for the zombie rp to finish, is it too soon to start deciding on a next one?
P.s, Seeing as you plot out the whole Roleplay, do you plot out the roles your characters play?

I have a few ideas floating in my Brain but I have no way how to write them out without forcing people to do certain actions. They are more of "play it your own way" role plays.

I'm working on a 30's RP in the American Mafia era centered around The Mob and the Movie Industry, back in the days when it was glammer and stardom. Also there's the usual cast of detectives, reporters, etc.

I think the RPs are getting so popular and so active that having two at the same time is a good thing. Not saying I'll play both but keeping each readable for the average follower would be nice. I'm playing in the zombie one and sometimes even I can't stomach reading two pages every day.

The zombie one's gone a bit out of control. Good but chaotic.

I'm almost at breaking point with that, If it get's any more hectic i think i'll kill my character off.

And a mobster type RP could be fun, but I would have trouble in getting people to stay in the one place or in the same kind of area. Like with the zombie, it's like stay in Y or get mauled by zombies. And with the RP before, it was on a spaceship, stay in spaceship or die from space zombies. Like with a mobster/30's RP how would you stop people from just leaving town for X amount of murders?

I have some ideas, but just off the top of my head...

*Prison-can't think of a way to make it work well
*Cruise ship- I think it could work rather well
*Tropical island, think lost kind of except no man eating bears.
*Plane crash into desert/remote place with little chance of getting anywhere-have X amount of days until help arrives (depending on how many people are playing and stuff.)
*A situation involving a bank heist, where the killer is either ratting the people out to the police, or killing because they want the whole sum of money.

And that's about it off the top of my head, I'm sure if I gave it more thought it would be better than mediocre...

To Pie: the best way is to say that the RP takes part in the mobsters territory. Leave your territory and you get shot by mobsters.

I suppose people will respect the rules of the game, Like I.e, No creating random or destructive things.

*Mr Bland creates a cyclone and destroys the world*

That's pretty much RP good manners, so yeah, I understand... it's a downright shame I don't know much about it. I would end up relying on my experiences from the godfather to get by :D
