I play violin and I'm currently learning guitar.

Violin is an insturment of total perfection, you get my respect if you're good at that.
(and no, guitars are definatly not, you ever heard Nirvana?)

I'm seriously considering taking up learning guitar, my suster has an old accoustic that needs re-stringing so it would be a start. I guess Rock Band drums don't count?

I've been playing percussion for about 5 years now. I love marimba and the drumset, but my real affinity is the marching tenors.

Yeah after eight years of violin learning guitar feels like cheating, frets are pretty damn easy.

I can play the acoustic guitar, the kalimba, the hulusi, and I have an erhu (which I never use.)

The kalimba is a West African instrument also known as the Mbira or thumb piano.

The hulusi is a free reed instrument played by the Dai peoples of Yunnan province, China.

The erhu is one of the most famous classical chinese instruments, and is often described as a fiddle.

For more information, check the articles on Wikipedia.

Cleverly, you really can't count baritone and tuba as two different instruments as they're basically the same.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there Tom. They might be similar in America, but they are quite different in other countries (For example, Australia (Where I live) and England). I play a euphonium, but I used to play a baritone. If anything, a baritone is closer to a horn rather than a tuba, as the baritone has a smaller bore size and is generally more compact. A euphonium and tuba I can accept being basically the same (because they are), but not a baritone. Just as a quick reference, a baritone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Baritone.jpg, an euphonium: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Euphonium1.JPG and a tuba: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tuba.png

I play the acoustic guitar. But very badly. One day I'll rectify that tho! I'm an eternal optimist regarding such things.

But it may mean diverting some of my time away from obsessively playing computer games...

Tell you who's a really really really good banjo player - STEVE MARTIN!

Just recently been listening to his early stand up shows (e.g. Get Small, A Wild and Crazy Guy) and not only was he genuinely really funny back then, he's also a really really really good banjo player. Worth checking out I promise you!

I'm not impressed, Violin is still much harder to learn than a guitar and you couldn't get me anything better than Buckethead? MAB is one of the few people who has perfected every guitar technique.

Excuse me, I've been learning guitar for the past 8 years, and I'm off to music college in October to do a guitar course, and I'll be damned if you just said that. Not wishing to start an instrument war, but the guitar is just as difficult to master as the violin. It has six strings, compared to your four, and when taking into account that most guitars have 22 frets, there are around 130 notes to learn on the fretboard. It's an instrument capable of rhythm, like a piano (and unlike a violin), but also capable of searing lead parts as well. It's an incredibly versatile instrument, and is just as difficult to master as any other. Violin included.

And if by MAB you mean Michael Angelo Batio, oh pleeeease. The man thinks he's still living in the 80s. Eric Johnson wipes the floor with him in terms of technique. And Buckethead wipes the floor with both of them.

Geez.. Violin VS guitar

Least it isnt another bass vs guitar XD

Now.. nilpferdkoenig using Nirvana as an example of guitar skill is like using me in grade 4 as an example of violin skill. There are a ton of really good classical gutiarists that might tickle ones fancy (I stay the hell away from solo shreaders myself..)

j-e-f-f-e-r-s.. Come now. You have to admit that your average guitarist is noo where near the musical level of an average violinist. I played classical upright bass for a year through school and the level of sophistication was way behond anything I could imagen. The fingering, the lack of frets, the bowing (god how I hate the bowing). I know eletric bass and upright bass are way closer to each other than guitar is to violin but I would put a violinist who could play canon in D higher then your average Em pentatonic shreader.

You can do some totaly insane things with a guitar, but thanks to tabs, punk bands and distortion it has really lost a lot of musical credit

True, but just because most mainstream guitar players are very average at best, doesn't mean that the guitar itself is an average instrument. I've heard plenty of violin players who were average at best. Does that make the violin a beginner's instrument? Of course not.

Sorry if I seem to get worked up about this. It's just that I have to put up with plenty of snobbery already from other musicians, and nearly all of it is uncalled for. Anyone who's ever listened to David Gilmour or Gary Moore knows that the guitar is a wonderfully expressive instrument. Sure, there are lots of talentless guitarists out there. But there are also a lot of incredibly skilled ones as well.

I play some classical and ballad music with an classical acoustic(like a normal acoustic but with a jack for amplification) and also use a imitation fender 52 stratocaster to play classic rock(guns and roses, led zeppelin, rush, the like) and songs by joe satriani and steve vai

I've been playing guitar for around 9 and a half years now. I'm not too bad, but I should get back into it, my skills have really dropped. I mostly play video game tunes and Metal songs, especially stuff by In Flames, Opeth, HammerFall and Luca Turilli. I own an Ibanez RG 170, it has a few modifications for easier playing and it is my baby.
