I think stereotyping, and more specifically, acting upon it, is probably the quickest route out. The problem is, I find most of the anti-stereotypers stereotype other people. Typically with the statement of "I don't mean to sound racist..." or "I'm not a racist or anything". I use temporary individual stereotypes for people until I get to know them better; it works better than starting from scratch.
I haven't found any shades that work for me. But I tend to just end up messing around with them anyway, like flipping between shade and normal. I do the same sort of thing with night-vision in games - bright green, super dark, bright green, dead. New General Questions: All opinions welcome. I work better with more opinions - even if they contradict! |
Copy Clerk Posts: 118 Joined: 8 May 2008 | alright DBiscuit, I can help on someof the general questions you have. I've been known to avoid someone I liked, another girl, because I thought she could tell and I wasn't (ever) ready to tell her. So it could be embarresment, or we could just be doing it subconciously. For the second there, you got invited to a suprise "friends only" outing after a single converstaion with girl X? If I'm right I would be suspicious, an I'm not sure what I'd do. Yes I would abandon my family. No I would not abandon my friends. Not familiar witht hat phrase, and I'm not sure I should be. No, no you may not. So hope those help. |

It that were true girls would also like going out with *wide* guys, too, and that's not the case. I don't think girls necessarily over look guys for being short, it's just that short (or wide or whatever) don't turn them on. And if someone doesn't turn you on, well, better she turn you down early on than go out with you trying to overlook that fact because of other things about you. Whether it makes someone shallow or not, everyone wants to be happy. And being with someone who doesn't turn you on doesn't lead to happiness. Not saying the person has to be gorgeous, just that on a purely physical level they need to turn you on to some extent or it'll all go very badly sooner or later. |

This might also have something to do with AnGeL.SLayer's comment on feeling protected but: What's with staying with a guy who treats a woman with a less than standard attitude? I think most geeks have thought this from time to time, most guys on the internet or whatever, but I just do not understand it. And yep, for the record, I'm currently dealing with this situation with a friend of mine. |

I'd tend to agree with that. I even go as far as saying girls go more for looks than guys do when looking for a potential date. But it's not to say being good-looking is the only thing that matters. There's been guys I've know that are ass-ugly but got some smoking hot chicks because they presented themselves well. Working out and being kind of athletic looking don't hurt our chances either. |

I think I'd certainly agree that women place a lot more importance on looks than is acknowledged. Doesn't make them 'shallow' or 'bitches'; just makes them, well, 'human.' A little bit tangential, but you'd probably enjoy this article: How economics and game theory explain the shortage of available, appealing men |

Ah, Slate, I don't read that anymore after their 'tribute' to Gary Gygax. (Some a-hole decided that he'd take GG's death as an excuse to blame him for everything wrong with Dungeons and Dragons) |

Press Junketeer Posts: 398 Joined: 8 Oct 2007 | ...I was saying that girls tend to look for a guy that can offer her a different level of comfort and feeling of protection. Theres nothing quite like behind held in the arms of a guy you like/love, nothing. Being a guy who's taller/bigger than her tends to help that feeling hit home. Each girl has her own personal perspective on the matter. My friend Kara loves clean cut guys, I like them to be a bit more rugged. Thats just our personal tastes. I prefer rugged but I'd never turn down a clean cut guy just because he was clean cut. Especially if his first impression makes me raise an eyebrow or smile. If you all you guys think all women base solely on looks then no wonder you hate us all. Some girls are shallow but not all of them. Your going to get a lot of girls, especially all you high school guys, who will/wont go out with you purely on looks. Thats because they still have a lot of growing up to do. This all goes for a lot of guys as well. Talking someone into a date is a whole bundle of things you have to get just right. You have to appeal to their better nature. You have to get them thinking and having a good time BEFORE you ask them out again. First impressions can't be redone with a reset button. ^_^ |

So even if a girl likes the grungy guys, or clean cut guys, doesn't mean she won't like the other type, just that it isn't her usual choice... |

Oh, I think I may have found the answer to my question. |

Haha, perfect. I also had to sign up to say that "I can't believe this thread is being taken seriously." A few posts at the beginning were great, then girls started actually commenting on what they thought were real questions. I should have known it would have turned into a Sex war. |

It doesn't though, for most girls. Far more girls get that feeling from a tall guy than a big guy. Not only that, but the tall guys girls *do* seem to like are actually the guys who are are tall in the way that they don't look like they'd be good at protecting anything--girls tend to like guys who are tall and *skinny* more than guys who are tall and athletic.
No, we just think girls pretend like they base their decisions to a lesser extent on looks than guys do. Big difference. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1771 Joined: 3 Mar 2008 | Umm, I think this thread is going a bit too far. Anyway, my question. I have a tendency for bad luck with girls, resulting in depression and mass food eating tendencies (which does not reflect how thin I am. I'm 15 and weigh 55kg, a sign of anorexia). As well as the obsession that whenever the phone rings, it's "her" again, even when we haven't talked in 3 months. My self esteem isn't very good though; I spend most of my time trying to be unnoticed. Unsuccessfully. Naturally, these are stereotypes that are usually pointed at the female gender. It makes me wonder: have we got it all wrong? In times of desperation, do females turn to the food stores for consolation? |

Well, all stereotypes have a basis somewhere. Honestly though, it varies from person to person. My friend gorged herself on Oreos, ice cream, and anything unusually greasy when she was depressed, but I found I couldn't eat at all without puking it back up. Although I recommend not doing the gorging thing: my dad used to be all skinny with a high metabolism too- he'd eat a whole pizza by himself. But now he's got a wonderful beer/pizza belly that he can't seem to get rid of, lol. |

Thanks for the help. Unforunately, eating is a bit of a habit for me once I get started. It's a subconscious thing for me. Anyways, I'll at lest attempt to replace chips with lettuce, see if that helps. |

Try gum, too. I used to snack a lot when I was gaming for long periods of time, but I switched to chewing gum instead. It also helped me stop biting my nails, lol. |

I was just sterotyping how the hockeyplayer guys in the town here are. And I wasn't really refering to ONS either. They are jerks by nature <_< ONS are bad in general no matter if it's a nice guy or girl next door. |

- Some girls are impossible even for other girls to figure out, lol. I know sometimes I'll do this thing where I'm afraid they don't like me or that I annoy them so I avoid them so that they don't get annoyed by me. If that made any sense. |

true, I don't like people who change them selves, I was only pointing it out, because most guys I know don't like to hear that there isn't much they can do.
Although AnGeL you make a good point, and I'm really not the best person to be giving advice, I'm not a very common girl, I'm very odd. So my opinions are flawed, you make a better point.
