My waster friends who do arts in college think I'm a geek but I'm really just like maths and physics slightly more than average. When I was 15 I was a complete emo-face. Stripey tights, panda-eyes, chains out of pockets. Eurgh. Luckily I can look back on that and laugh. By laugh I mean cringe. |

It's quite annoying. I wish people would hurry up and at least agree on the offensive and totally inaccurate stereotypes. |

In central Canada the biggest difference is that a Geek has social skills that extend outside of the Geek community while a Nerd does not. A Geek knows a lot of techno stuff, loves certain types of movies, etc. but is still able to hit on pretty girls and hang out with different people. Nerds just give off a vibe that says "If I were any weirder, you'd be afraid of me." Again, just a local definition. |

No you are He-Man! or the Hulk, i mean being able to stay upright without that thing dragging you down under its weight is admirable. |

Muckraker Posts: 292 Joined: 9 Oct 2007 | I've always considered geeks to be ones who are highly intelligent and thus have an interest in technology/math/science/etc. Nerds on the other hand tend to be more focused on a specific hobby (generally a "nerdy" hobby) but don't necessarily have to have brainpower: DnD nerds, Star Wars nerds, video game nerds, etc. I've found that these definitions tend to work the best. Of course, there is plenty of overlap between them. I myself am a geek since I'm into science, technology, and engineering, while I also happen to be a Star Wars and video game nerd. |

American soldiers usually referred to the Viet Cong as "Charlie". However, I believe the term you're thinking of is "gook", which is a derogatory American term for people of Asian descent. |

Charlie, I thought was British and I'm pretty sure I havn't heared Gook...ever. Maybe this is a lesson to not trust the words of teachers. I don't feel like I am any of these catergories. Maybe others think I might fit into one of these but I have no idea which one I will be put into. |

"Charlie" is American. It was coined because U.S. Armed Forces use a standard phonetic alphabet to communicate letter strings so there's no confusion. One of the popular ones these days is WTF, since it's more polite to say "whiskey tango foxtrot" than "what the fuck?" Anyway, Viet Cong abbreviates down to VC, so American forces referred to them as VC... except, of course, to abbreviate the name, they had to radio it back and forth as "Victor Charlie" (don't ask me why they didn't just say Viet Cong at that point; I don't know). Soon it became shortened to "Charlie". For it's part, "gook" could come from a couple of different places, but it was also coined by U.S. military forces, this time during the Korean War, and has been used by Americans to insult Asian people ever since. As for being a geek or a nerd, I would like to think I'm neither one, but I think I just proved otherwise. |

Agreed with this one. I have many tendencies that means I can't label myself as one definition (no, sorry to some of the fruitier guys out there. Homosexual tendency is not one that's on my list. :| ). Have been a 'hardcore' gamer, and now a 'casual' gamer with hardcore tendencies. I chose neither because not one label holds more truth over me than another, except perhaps 'retard' or 'twat'. |

I continuously stick to my belief that nerd and geek are two sides of the same thing. |

If I had a penis the size of a blue whale's, I'd pick fights with guys in bars then whip out my huge penis and crush them to death. I'd think pants shopping would be hard though, also walking would be impossible. Anyway, to answer your question I would say I am a nerd, as the term originally came from the word knurd which is drunk backwards and was used to refer to students too studious to drink. I would say that fits me pretty well. |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 847 Joined: 7 Feb 2008 | I'm a geek/nerd through and through by your definitions, though I frequently call myself a "Geek of All Trades" where as my Nerdity is pretty limited (History/Religious Studies/Mythology). My geek of all trades label comes from my broad but fairly intense love of Anime, Movies, Music, Videogames, Pen'Paper RPGs, Comics, Genre Fiction and Television. I also have some really strange super-geeky things like being OBSESSED with Steampunk, Pulp and Alternate History. My nerdity comes from my Religious History degree. I try to keep my academic knowledge up by regularly reading through historical materials and doing my own little research projects, though lately I'm more interested in Folklore, Ritual and Alternative Archeology then any serious historical field. My last serious historical research was into Imperial Germany (circa mid-late 1800's until WW1) and I haven't really done anything since then. What's really bad is often my Geekery and my Nerdity will overlap and You'll get me going on about both at great length. |

Paperboy Posts: 35 Joined: 2 Apr 2008 | At this moment I'd like to point out that this was my opinion and way of seeing things ;) The main point was to see what you guys 'n' gals classed them as! The description I posted was what myself and my friends at Uni seem to have agreed upon. I also don't really think a geek or nerd is a type of social clique, because that would mean that people who don't fit in with that style don't hang out with you, and you don't hang out with them! There has been many a time when I've gone out with people who have no taste in music and have no desire to talk about games etc, but I could just be at the age now where these social cliques lose relevance and youhang out with people because you like them :P |

According to you, I'm both. Geek 'cos of my hobbies (gaming, anime, so on), and nerd because I do well in school.
