i just was wondering how many programmers there are here in the Escapist.
do you make programs?
how often do you write programs?
do you do it professionally, or as a hobby?
would you say you are skilled at it?
what programming language(s) do u know/use?

I'm Jackpot, and I'm a second year games programming student.

I'm cutting my teeth.

I use and know C++, windows programming, Direct X programming (i consider them to be extensions of C++), and unrealscript.
I'm hoping to learn python and XML soon. Also how to use the HGE API.

I am going to ITT-Tech for Web Development so I'm learning many different languages. By the way, XML is easy to learn and use, you basically make your own tags.

I used to program Unix object oriented databases using Elvis. That doesn't make me much of a programmer though. I do some work with flash these days, but I am still in the learning phase more than anything.

I'm learning... through school, I've learned some really pathetic stuff. Though, later on in the year, I'll be getting into Visual Basic (damn school won't do C).

I learned a bit of VB at school, but due to the stupidest, most unqualified teacher ever, we didn't learn much. By the end of it, we all knew more about the language than her though.

i am an amutuar programmer,
i learned Scheme last semester in computer science and loved it,
i plan to learn Actionscript 3.0 and Java within a year from now
i hope to eventually go to college for computer programming, and then get a career making programs,

Hmm... keep meaning to set some time aside to do it; have got the basics of Python sorted, and had a flick through the first chapter of Knuth's Art of Computer Programming, but that kind of scared me off...

The last time I wrote real code it was in Fortran. Once upon a time I guess I could've called myself a programmer, but that was a decade or so ago... it's all gone now.

Computer Science graduate, did Java for three years and C++ for one. Currently getting my head around the DirectX SDK and the MFC library for Windows programming, which incidentally, I hate.

You've got my respect, sir... it is a tough road. I'm an amateur programmer. I use it mainly for solving problems in applied mathematics (my field of study). I use C++, Java, Perl, and Matlab. I kind of want to pick up Python, but I'm scared of its dependence on whitespace.

Yeap, i am. I've worked with several languages, but as of the latest years i'm wasting my talent working on industrial robotics, programming in PTSC and ZX assembly.

And oh boy, does it suck.

Just finishing my second year in computer science. I'm good with Java and not so good with C++. I also know some SQL.

I have a rough understanding of the C, Basic, and Labview code languages through my school's robotics program but that's about it. I have wanted to branch out into Python and see what all the fuss is about though.

I learned enough java to write some plug-ins for Sillysoft Games (check out my stuff there if you like), but now I'm learning Flash and going into casual game design.

I know a little C++. I and write and implement classes, for instance I can make my own string class. And I've written some programs to keep track of the games and movies I own. Like, I can run the program I made and type in the genre I'm in the mood for, and have it show me a list of results and some relevent info.

I still do a bit of AutoLISP programming now and then. I used to be reasonably fluent in Fortran, but haven't touched it for probably ten years.

I am a C++/C# programmer. I use DirectX 9.0c managed at work, where I make educational software. I make games for fun at home using allegro or OpenGL. I participate in game making competitions at http://allegro.cc and http://tigsource.com . Everything I feel like showing people is posted for downloading at http://monkeydev.com .

I'm C++/C# too, although I'm thinking of having a crack at Python, and I code mostly recreationally, although I recently had to do some C++ programming for computer lab (I'm a physics student).

I think my favourite language (right now) is probably C#, because you get a nice base class library, and the language prevents you doing anything too stupid, whilst still giving you the power to do almost anything, so you spend less time having to muck around making sure you allocate and deallocate memory properly and the like. Also the performance doesn't suck too bad.

I'm totaly into game maker. I know, I know, you're thinking it's not programming, well, f*** you. It comes close enough for me. I have about 7 years of experience with it, so I would call myself quite skilled.

I also know a bit of JAVA, since I'm following a study for it, but I wouldn't call myself able too do anything with it other then hello world without an internet connection.

That would make a total of 2 languages: gml and JAVA.

I'm going to college for Computer Programming, specifically video game programming. Just started though so all I know is C. I have some skill in Ruby and Python, plus I'm decent in HTML.

I do very limited Lua (in Garrysmod)
Plans (far out in the future):
making a top down shooter (Mmm... top down shooter)
making something similar to a TI-80> calculator for pc.

I'm KB, and I'm a second year computer science student.

I'm currently getting taught C++, C, Java, Eiffel (urgh...), XML, and VHDL (again, urgh...). I'm learning Python, PHP, and Bash-Scripts.

I tend to write actual programs whenever I'm not supposed to and not whenever I have to. Most of them are bash-scripts.

I'm a programmer at Petroglyph games, and formerly at Westwood Studios. I've professionally written C, C++, Java, Assembley (Intel, Motorola, PDP-11), Objective C, Perl, BASIC, Lua, and countless other scripting and web languages (HTML, Javascript, ActionScript, etc etc etc).

I worked on Tiberian Sun, Nox, Emperor, RA2, and now UaW for PC and 360. I'm the author of the WoW AddOn "UberCC" and have helped out on a few others.

I haven't really coded for fun for a couple years (except the WoW addons) but I'm just getting into XNA and I have a great idea for a tower defense game whose working title is "Heartless Killer Sperm". I'm guessing I'll have to change that if it'll ever see the light of day on XBLA.

I'm a second year (or will be after summer vacation) software engineering student. I've seen C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, and Assembly. I'm only comfortable with C/C++, though.

lua counts. Also, it's perl.

I've done some work in M68k assembly. Never again.

C++, VB, JavaScript, PHP, TorqueScript, and trying to learn Assembly. I'm no certified professional though. It's one of the things I do in my spare time until I go to college.

I'm not really a programmer, but for the past year I have been trying to learn TI-Basic, mostly as something to do in my math class. Next year, though, I am taking AP Computer Science, which I believe focuses on Java.

Used to be a programmer, but got tired of the technical leads changing the programming environment. After learning a third language that did the exact same thing as the previous two, I didn't care much for software development any more.

Seriously, it was like someone would come into the office and tell our group to start speaking Swahili for no other reason than they needed to make themselves look important enough not to be fired.

I'm okay now. ;-)
