I have live versions of Pink Floyd's Shine on you Crazy diamond and it is the best song I own. Hearing the crowd just makes it that much more enjoyable

Jeff Buckley's album Live in Sin-É has some of the best covers i have ever heard. Night Flight - Led Zeppelin is one of the best ones on the album.

Have to agree there. I would even go as far as to say their live version of Darkside of the Moon from Pulse was better than the album, but that's because David Gilmour is my guitar god and everything he does live is bloody fantastic, not to mention perfect.

Also I must mention Guns N' Roses 'Rocket Queen' is much better from their Live Era album.

Metallica's 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' is a great live song from any of their live albums. The Ride the Lightning version didn't do it for me, and then I heard the Live Shit:Binge and Purge version and was floored.

oooh its a bold man that says anything is better than Dark side of the Moon :) Good choice though its definately a close thing. I think that album is the only one I have ever heard where the songs so seamlessly slot together to make something more than the sum of their parts. Breathtaking stuff and I agree on the David Gilmour front

Buckethead's live performance of Whitewash, as can be seen on Youtube, is absolutely jaw-dropping. Some of the best guitar playing I have ever heard.

Also, Iron Maiden playing Fear Of The Dark at Rock In Rio 2001. Stunning in every way.

However geeky this may sound. If anyone likes the Final Fantasy music I highly advise getting any of the numerous live orchestral cd/dvds available.
~VOICES~, 20020220, More Friends, Tour De Japon.
Most of them are on Youtube, so if need be just go there but to truly appreciate the work buy it and enjoy the high quality audio/video.

The Cooper Temple Clause's A.I.M. was incredible live because they somehow tweaked the bass so that it permeated every fibre of my being and didn't hurt one bit.

I don't know if they even have a studio recorded version but Nightwishes' track Roll Tide (Crimson Tide) has some great chanting going on in the live version that I think would take away from the sound if it was missing...

Def Leppard - Armageddon It (live in Montreal '96) - An epic song, that seems more epic live.
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me (live in the clubs) - Just wow, the guitars are heavy, the drums rule and the crowd are in to it from the beginning

Also, Dir en grey used to be really good live but the head singer got vocal chords surgery and then they weren't anymore...

Rime of the Anchient Mariner sounds better when live. So does nearly every Iron Maiden song for that matter.

Bite your tongue.....oh I can't stand it...you're half right, with some of the stuff (particularly their current material) sounding best on the C.Ds. But actually live is best.

My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama - a live version done by Steve Vai. Sounds metric tons better than Frank Zappas version.

I'm a massive fan of Live Killers, the queen album. Live versions of Now I'm Here are always awesome
