Become one the most awesome characters in all of literary history and a chance to meet starets Zozima? Sure |
Copy Clerk Posts: 60 Joined: 23 Apr 2008 | Hmmm, in Australia mate basically just means friend and soulmate means romantic perfect match just so you know, so that came off a bit weird. I haven't meet any people who are perfect friends but good luck with whatever you're doing. |

Naa, we all die and dear Fyodor went quite quickly, a blow to the head and it's over. I don't remember it even being mentioned that he saw Smyerdakov. |

Agreed. If he wants to see "weird" he should head over to one of the advice topics, lol. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 453 Joined: 14 May 2008 | In America, the term to use would be "brother from another mother," by the way. Pronounced "brothafromanuthamutha." Yes, all seamlessly blending into one word. Mostly depending on where you are; but American slang tends to lose all enunciation. |
Beat Writer Posts: 196 Joined: 20 Feb 2008 | I have. I met my best friend at a D&D game, and we quickly bonded. We have a few places where our interests do not merge (while we both play video games, we mostly play different ones), but overall, we're a perfect fit for each other. Actually, this friend is more like my "sister from another mother", since she's female. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 964 Joined: 16 Jan 2008 | Oh Gods. The short answer would be no. I nearly did but that kinda went tits up really. I have other mates who understand me reasonably well but get on my nerves way too much to be considered soulmates. I'm just generally a Scrooge, come to think of it. Oh dear. |

Yep, me too. I'm the type of guy that you'd talk to and say "Yeh, nice meeting you. Alright, gotta go now" and that'd be it. I'm not the type you'd form a close friendship with... because I'm evil/jk |

Sometimes, stompy, you make me want to come over to your house and give you a great big bear hug. |

It stems from him changing his avatar. What happened to the Simpsons sleaze-bag, man? You used to be cool. Back to the topic: I guess this is your soul maaaaaaaaaate. Are you gay? If you are, then go for it. Me, I don't really enjoy applying terms associated with love to my friends. |
Muckraker Posts: 320 Joined: 18 Jan 2008 | To answer your original post, Saskwatch: yeah, I've met a few people like that. People I can talk about most all my interests with. But I wouldn't pin the term "soulmate" onto them..that just makes things sound weird. Been there, suffered through that, not a place I particularly want to visit again. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 396 Joined: 8 Oct 2007 | You could always use the term kindred souls. You two have a lot in common and thats good..but the term 'soul mate' is usually used when speaking in romantic terms. I've only met one guy I ever felt I could call my soul mate...Yeah rather not get into that one again. *sighs* ^_^ |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 533 Joined: 19 Dec 2007 | Let's just use the phrase "Soul brother" (Soul brudda) and leave it at that, eh? ("We're soul brothers!" - Kamina) I've got one buddy like that. We met at college and instantly started talking about computer games. Sometimes our interests converge, sometimes they're nowhere near each other. But at the end of the day, he's the only one I keep having serious conversations with when we're coming back from LANs in his car. I've known him for over six years now. |
PROBATION Posts: 3319 Joined: 26 Feb 2008 | I have a soul-mate. Jallil. She and I have so many common interests... I love it! Whether it is games, driving, cars in general, drawing, writing, reading, swimming.... Basically, there are few things I have done that she won't try with me. And I do everything she has done. I am SCUBA certified but she isn't, and she wants to get certified eventually. That is probably the one hobby I have that she doesn't but wants to. I don't know if she likes Golf, but I would rather just play with my brother alone on that one anyway... Oh yeah, I haven't met a "Man Soul Mate" yet. User was put on probation for: My girlfreind is so damn annoying!. (3 days) |

Why not? People are getting so hung up on the word. |

It's because "soulmate" is mostly used when referring to someone you're in love with. It's awkward to hear it in terms for friends, so we're offering other terms for you so you don't sound like something you're not. |

I'm aware of the reason. I'm just getting annoyed that people can't let go of something so small; something that I placed big neon lights around saying "read it in THIS way, not it's traditional meaning". One, or two, or even three suggestions would have been alright but when it has to be noted by every second poster I get a bit worried about people's easy-going nature. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 453 Joined: 14 May 2008 | Note that none of us came into the topic going "OMG Fag!" We all knew exactly what you meant because you highlighted the fact that it wasn't meant in a sexual way. I actually think it's interesting to hear the range of terms... I, growing up in a predominantly gang-involved neighborhood, had never heard "soulmates" in that connotation, or even "soul brother"- and "kindred spirits" would probably get you jumped for being a know-it-all, lol. So I think it's really cool to hear the variations on the same concept. |

So I was a lesson I have learned through long hard experience is that every person you meet will find a lot of what thrills you totally and utterly boring, and you will feel the same about them. Even your closest friends might have several no-go topics you shouldn't broach. Which is why I was so excited about today's events.
I was procrastinating at uni when suddenly an acquaintance says hello. He's been procrastinating too and he's wondering if we should procrastinate together; getting lunch then going into the city. I agree, so off we go. Then something wonderful happens. Everything I can imagine talking about he finds interesting and vice versa. We talk about PnP RPGs, anthropology and science, philosophy (in layman's terms to keep me in the loop), the philosophy of science, comics, fantasy and sci-fi. I'm excited like I haven't been in ages and I sound it too: I'm barely keeping my tongue in check. Have I met a soulmaaaaate*?
This thread shouldn't be totally about me so I'll attempt to create a flimsy excuse for this blog entry of a thread: have you met anyone with which you can talk about anything that interests you- who will be just as enthusiastic as you are, not just academically intrigued? Or feel free to make this topic about anything else tangentially related.
*Should be pronounced in an ozzie accent to understand the proper meaning.
