Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 764 Joined: 13 Dec 2007 | I use cursing as just a way to vent anger, nothing more. However, I suppose it can be cool, or funny to some extent if used right. (see: Scarface) But for some random kids to be cursing, well, they've either got to have some anger issues, or they're just plain apathetic. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1860 Joined: 13 Sep 2007 | I fail to see how swearing could POSSIBLY affect temperature. Gawd, try not to be so stupid. But in all seriousness, if you do something with the aim of trying to be cool, you're very uncool. Now get the fuck out of my fucking way, you fucking fucker. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1368 Joined: 12 Sep 2007 | Since I too did that at thirteen, I shall refrain from criticizing the kids in question. But to your question, of course not. |

I am in total agreement. Using it as a way to vent is usually the best reason. And yeah I also concurr on the point that cursing can be funny if used right. User was banned for: Real Jackasses. (Permanent) |

Paperboy Posts: 46 Joined: 23 May 2008 | Profanity is similar to a spice: mild sprinkles of curse words, like banging your thumb with a hammer or coming to a dead end with a horde of CGI-inspired lack of imagination, on the example provided or through other forms of media (books, games, etc) can elevate the fervor of said dish(es), but choking the concoction with an unnecessary barrage of curse words, like stuffing a portly child with Big Macs or shooting a quadraplegic between the eyes, will ruin the flavor and rot the appeal. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 790 Joined: 1 Jan 2008 | Well...my and my mates usually refrain from swearing...too much. But every once in a while, something snaps and for a couple of minutes we start using f-bombs as a comma. In fact this already became a little in-joke. |
Paperboy Posts: 27 Joined: 28 May 2008 | I don't think it makes someone cooler - but it can definitely be a turn off or make someone seem obnoxious. Like a 13 year old who is just doing it because they hear it a lot or think it's cool? Bleh. But my friends and I curse just randomly because it's kind of a part of our vocab. You can definitely tell when it feels forced. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1023 Joined: 14 Dec 2007 | Bitch please. I swear all the time in order to be cool. Not to mention all the hotties it nets me. Science has proven that girls love swearing. Swearing and popped collers. Hell, one time I uttered a string of of curses so profain, that every girl withing earshot was on their knees begging to go home with me for a night of teh l33t h0t s3xors. That should tell you all you need to know about kids that swear to be cool. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2944 Joined: 8 May 2008 | no. no it does not yet children ages 10-34 beleive this. however the string of fucks and shits and bitchs and asses all come out sounding like an incoherent whiney plee for attention. never swearing becuase they're "cuss words" makes you a whiny little momma's boy. it can make or break a movie or comedy act (dane cook) but swearing in no way make you cooler. I swear but not becuase I think it makes me cooler. it can make what you say funnier, but it won't get you any "hotties", it will repel them. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 109 Joined: 11 Jun 2008 | I think swear words shud be used only in specific circumstances. That way they keep their effect. I also like to be more imaginitive in the way i insult people. In no way does it make you cool |
Copy Clerk Posts: 91 Joined: 5 Feb 2008 | I fail to see how cursing can make you cool. I also fail to see why it matters if people think it makes them cool. News flash: The World Is Full of Idiots. Deal with it. |

I had hoped that that the fact that my post was not only ridicules, but also the whole "That should tell you all you need to know about kids that swear to be cool." would make it obvious that I was joking. I guess not. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 677 Joined: 2 Mar 2008 | I curse somehwat freely. I don;t say the more severe words like Fuck all that often, but I do say ass a large amount, and it's variations (Ass-hole, etc). Mostly, this is because my Mm is New Yorker, and they curse pretty freely. Also, my father is Greek. If you've ever heard Greeks talk to each other, essentailly, they just yell at and curse at each other, and this consitutes a conversation. So, yeah, I know I'm not cool, that's just how I speak. And again, I try not to use the more extreme curses. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 110 Joined: 15 Apr 2008 | I don't think swearing makes you cool. However, I believe the language is changing. The new generation seem to "have to" swear more to somehow supersede the previous generation. I know for a fact that in the country where I come from (Denmark), during the last 10 years, harsh language has become more and more accepted. For instance the word fuck, which was completely unheard of to say in the media just a couple of years ago, is actually acceptable to say on the radio now (as long as it is not overused). I think that the younger generation, in the "search" of being rebellious, kind of has to be more harsh in their language than those who came before them, or else they wont get noticed. I don't know how it is in the States, but in Scandinavia where I live and grew up, I believe it's the case. Although, I still don't think that swearing makes you cool. I guess that with age, people get smarter and more mature, they realize that cursing actually hurts some people, and so they try to limit their cursing. |
Beat Writer Posts: 158 Joined: 4 Feb 2008 | Kids swear at a much younger age than you think. They think it's cool at that age because it's forbidden and because the grown up kids do it. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 667 Joined: 4 Dec 2007 | I generally only curse around friends. Never around parents or other authority figures. Even then, I don't overuse it. The word 'dipshit' comes up fairly often, seeing today's society. On-topic: No, it doesn't. If you think about, actively not cursing makes you cooler, because you are forced to come up with creative descriptions for things without resorting to cheap curses. Descriptions like that always tend to be funnier or cooler, because it's fun to see a person do something creative like that on the fly, or even pre-planned. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 123 Joined: 29 Mar 2008 | Like everything else in life, what is "cool" is subjective to different audiences. I personally think that, no it does not. Although I don't have an issue with people who do curse. Sometimes I feel it's appropriate to. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 120 Joined: 2 Apr 2008 | It is customary for portuguese people to swear like sailors. But then again, we are a seafaring nation, so we're excused. I'll just pretend that every time I say 'fuck', I'm just keeping up with my cultural heritage. *sigh* |
Copy Clerk Posts: 62 Joined: 28 Nov 2007 | Hmmm, for the 13 year olds, the sad truth is it no doubt did make them cooler, at least in their peers eyes. I do swear a fair bit, around my friends and parents (I'm nineteen, it's just how we talk in our family, it's very tongue in cheek though, not at all serious, and not around the young ones). I just see them as any other word, to be used where appropriate. I still prefer to be creative when it comes to insults though. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 5 Joined: 13 Jun 2008 | It DOES NOT make you cooler. In my opinion of course. I do curse simply because somehow it is easier to express anger using cursing. That is something I have to work on. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 91 Joined: 10 Apr 2008 | I do not believe cursing to be cool but I still do it despite my faint attempts at stopping. |
News Room Contributor Posts: 5372 Joined: 13 Feb 2008 | I first swore at 7, and got smacked sideways for it. Most of the kids today need a good slap from time to time imho. BIG difference between "Don't do that" and sadism/abuse. Usually the difference between running out of the kitchen crying and actually pulling that pan of boiling water all over you. I mean, what do the kids today do if they're really upset? Say "Fudge!"? |
Beat Writer Posts: 151 Joined: 21 Jan 2008 | I hate kids that use swearing too much, I mean, they don't mean anything anymore because of it. We'll need to invent some stronger words soon |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4475 Joined: 24 Apr 2008 | swearing is a tool for adding emphasis to a phrase. so yes, sometimes it can be cool. |
Paperboy Posts: 24 Joined: 4 Oct 2007 | Swearing does not make a person cooler and unless they're stringing curse words together it doesn't make them lesser. Swears are just extremely expressive words crap and shit have the same meanings, are used in similar ways, and yet one is okay while the other is not? For what reason? Because we as a society say so? Cursing does not make a child cooler however breaking the rules does, at least among some of their peers, and since we as a society irrationally dub swearing as against the rules it becomes a means to an end. |

And I AM a sailor, so I am simply keeping with the stereotype as well... So fucking be it... |
Anonymous Source Posts: 7 Joined: 22 Mar 2008 | Cursing does not make you "cooler", especially as you get older. That said, I curse to an almost obscene level and am not likely to change my ways any time soon. |

I bring this question up because today I was walking down the street and two kids walked by. Two KIDS. About thirteen I think, cursing. And not the light cursing that mature people you use, you know, the occasional F-Bomb. But no, the F-Bomb was being dropped almost every other word. It is ridiculous. These kids thought they were cool saying fuck this and fuck that. So, my fellows, in your opinion, is cursing cool?
