We're posting in the forums of a video game website. I think our status as nerds is assured.

Beat me to it.

That really is all anyone needs to know.

I'm afraid that if you feel otherwise it's because you've forgotten how a non-nerd thinks.

This should prove my nerdiness, I just posted a massive thing on that Evolution thread explaining Darwin Neo-Darwin, Fossil and Carbon Dating, our relations to the Dolphines and Chimps, etc only for the thread to be closed before I could hit post. Damn.

I became an irrevocable nerd after spending two days playing Half-Life (1 through to 2.2)

Oh, that's awesome! It took it slower played through the entire thing, but it took me a few weeks. Although I did also play Blue Shift and Opposing Forces as well.

I should probably say that I'm a comic book nerd too and a bit of a scifi although I've never watched an episode of Star Trek in my life.

Comic book nerd as well? Have you read Action Philosophers? I love 'em.

Haven't even heard much of them. But I will know look into it. I like a lot of Graphic Novels and a few special edition events like the Marvel Civil War. I did enjoy Marvel Zombies a bit too much.

I read, but I don't read anything that complex (disregarding the Bible, one page every night)
I've never read James Joyce, don't care for comic books and the day I read anime is the day I eat a shoe with my ear.
I still need to read Ninteen-Eighty-Four and am about half-way through The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsene Lupin: Gentleman Burglar". Man, that title is a mouthful.
And to convince you I am a bit of a nerd, I can retexture anything that can be seen in anything using the Source Engine. I can't edit models because I have neither 3Ds Max 8, nor XSI. But with vtf plug-ins, textures are a snap in Photoshop.

I tried reading the bible once, but it was too far fetched for my liking. (Boom-tish) Sorry.

I want to read the Watchmen. I haven't gotten around to that yet, so I might wait to the movie so I can get two experiences. The fun movie one then the gritty-comic-truer one.

I have never in my entire life fit into a social group (nerds, geeks, jocks, populars, rebels, loners, ect.) but have always been well liked by all social groups. This is a matter which caused me some minor confusion when I was younger but something I've gotten used to now.

I don't consider myself a nerd, largely because no one I know considers me a nerd.

But yeah, I like video games.

Also, Monty Python is awesome and I use to see his commercials for the flying circus collection on T.V. a lot - why does that make you a nerd? (Take this for whatever it's worth but in my books I'd see you as a "cool" person for having that)

because it is nerdy humor that is mostly enjoyed by nerds, 'cool guyz' can't stand it :p

I'll never deny my nerdom, but the step from glasses to contact lenses was the best ever in my life.

I've been a nerd since back in the old days of grade school, when I was the quiet kid who was always reading and had no friends.

I'm pretty much the same way now.

A couple of years ago at the school I work at we had a kid who just couldn't understand why when he called me a nerd I wasn't offended. I still find it hilarious and sad at the same time that some people (him included) don't value learning and intelligence.

(Naturally he's out working in the mines now and probably earning significantly more than me, but good luck to him.)

I do feel a little offended when the term is bandied about to apply to people who just play a lot of games though.

Well, I don't like to seriously use labels buuut, I'm more of a geek than a nerd.

I think nerds aren't that far from geeks, except they're more studious. Me, I am not the studying type, and I don't have patience for intaking large amounts of information unless I plan to do something with it.

So yeah, I'm a geek.

I used to be an avid anime fan, still read manga, I game a lot, I like sci-fi and superhero stuff.... I dunno, I guess that's "nerdy".

I don't come off as a nerd though, I've never had anyone call me a nerd or a geek. I just think that as far as labels go, that's the one I fall into. Geek I mean.

I loathe when people get into the nerd/geek debate. they're the same thing, I get it, you need to take every waking second to worry over the nuances of the English language, just don't involve other people.

I own every sci-fi an fantasy book I've ever read.

Except for Dune: Messiah, Children of Dune, the Young Jedi Knights series and all the David Eddings books I've read because he sucks (I say that and I've read everything he ever wrote as of 2006).

I've also read Lord of the Rings five times and the first novel I read that I wasn't told to was War of the Worlds.

I'm a nerd because I know way too much about way too many things, most of which is only theory. I know about the physics wrapped around mechs and why they would almost never be used in an actual military, the exception being appleseed grade battlesuits and veritech fighters(even then that is pushing it). I play 40k and Magic the addiciton, although I haven't bought anything new of the latter in a few years. I have memorized a healthy chunk of D&D 3rd and 4th ed, hero system 5th ed, GURPS(although I'm a little rusty on this one), BESM 3rd ed. I read comics, webcomics, and manga on a daily basis. I frequent forums to discuss nerd things. I know about all kinds of vehicles, except regular modes of transportation although I could probably fake the funk on these. I like Stargate SG-1, god help me, Star Trek: Voyager (I expect to burst into flames after this post), anime, and kids cartoons(Transformers: animated, Beast Wars but I never saw generation 1 except the movie which I didn't see until I went to a friend's, who owned it, house and watched it there, Danny Phantom, Justice League/JLU, Batman/Superman the animated series(es), Fairly Oddparents.) ...urgh...there is more I don't want to type out though.

The reasons that I'm a nerd are innumerable, so I won't really go into them. What I find more fascinating is the reason that the nerd stereotype exists. One book I've read, Nerds: Who They Are and Why We Need More of Them by David Anderegg, cites the stereotype stemming from as far back as post-revolution America. He blames The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for the origination of the nerd personality. The book was intended as a lambasting of English intellectuals and to proselytize people to the idea that the pioneering spirit of American machismo is so much more desirable. For the most part, it worked very well. The book is still required reading for most American elementary school children.
I also found it interesting that most young children didn't actually know what a nerd was. They grouped it in with terms like "gay" in that they knew that being a nerd or being gay made them different which, in turn, made them bad things to be.

Anyway, I'm one of the "rare" occurrences of a girl being a nerd. For some reason the stereotype precludes girls for the most part, which I found interesting.

I'm a nerd because:

I build and repair computers
I play video games more than do exercise
I own a PS3
I enjoy most Anime
I hang around Internet forums to much
I think outside the normal box
I'm studying Astrophysics at university (<- that gives me the automatic title)
I used to beta test video games
I understand all the jokes in Futurama and consider it the best cartoon ever
I enjoy chess
I love Stargate
I pick out scientific errors in films and television series
I played 40K and made my own army up with story lines, rules and everything

I consider myself the new breed of nerd because:

I work as a lifeguard in a leisure center
I'm "fit" by sporting standards, not just people on my course
I body build
I participate well in team sports
I go out into the sun without damning it :P
I have represented my country in a physical competition (England & Tae Kwon-Do)
I don't consider walking exercise
A sci-fi film isn't my favourite (300 is though)

Yeah... yeah that minute I took to write that out really constitutes for "every waking second." And as for involving other people, I'm sorry. I really hope you can recover from the 30 seconds it took you to read that, I hope it wasn't too traumitizing.

Yeesh....

It's a good thing that someone is, considering the state of what passes for colloquial (or even formal in some cases) English these days. More English nerds please.

I do math for fun. I play computer games all the time. I am a LARPer, I'm an airsoft-player. I have spent thousands of dollars buying computer games and RPG-books. I write my own material to both. I make computer games. I think up and design cultures for fun. I consider old games much better than todays games, in most cases, and my collection of older games is really quite impressive. The time I spend online I mostly hang out in very nerdy places, like this place, Taleworlds forums or Sveroks forums (that's Swedish Role Playing and Conflict Gaming Federation). I think that should suffice for now.

I have a few qualities that mark me as a nerd:
- Obviously, I enjoy playing video games quite a bit. Generally RPGs.
- I play Dungeons and Dragons. Quite frequently.
- Nothing is more intoxicating to me than a really good fantasy novel.
- I wear thick-rimmed glasses.
- I make near-constant video game/D&D/Sci-Fi movie references that only my dad or my boyfriend ever gets.
- I have a high GPA and generally deem my classes "way too easy."

I think there's a few more, but I can't remember them at the moment, as I just woke up and haven't gone downstairs for my pills or caffeine yet.

EDIT: Oh yes, I'm part of an elite group of college students that take one week out of the school year to be in constant war with each other using NERF guns and balled up socks. Also known as BG Undead, a giant game of Humans vs. Zombies. Our guns are currently banned from campus, but we'll get them back!

[quote=LewsTherin]
-I cried when the cut Tom Bombadil out of the LOTR movies
quote]

I did that too, now my list:

-I just got a new piece of plexiglass to play D&D with
-I play WoW for the WARCRAFT half not the MMORPG half
-I've played every single Blizzard game in existence (I think)... (Lost Vikings for the win!)
-I have a subscription to PCgamer Magazine
follow up: -I debated one of the tips in their strategy guide with my friends... for hours.
my household contains more than 6 computers at the moment.
-I carry classic games on a flash drive and take them places incase I'm bored (yay fallout).
-I constructed an irrigation system which not only watered my crops but through a complex system of levers and pressure plates, would repel invaders trying to attack through my drainage system (all without drowning my fields) in dwarf fortress.

theres more...
and unfortunately I think I just displayed Geek "light" (damn! I knew I should have started reading that C++ guide book I bought a few days ago!)

wars wouldnt be the same without guns, it would just be a rather nasty argument with lots of pushing and shoving (until someone finds a big stick)

just to suit the english nerds

- never had to read a manual or instruction book

- enjoy Tourchwood, Dr Who, IT Crowd, Top Gear and various anime (inc. Death Note, Bleach, Naruto)

- use witty comebacks that most people take a while to understand

I am a geek because -

- I am a total Trekkie. (I don't dress up or go to conventions, but I do know the history of the planet Vulcan.)

- I spend *far* too much time online every day.

- I used to play Warhammer 40k during my school days, but now play D&D *&* Call of Cthulhu.

- I simply *have* to have the latest gadgets. (I'm due to trade in my 16GB iPhone for the new 3G one next month)

- I actually have a framed picture hanging in my bedroom of the Enterprise warping away from spacedock.

- I own & play numerous Japanese H-games on my PC.

- I listen to obscure bands (a few Japanese) that very few others have actually heard of.

- I have a subscription to The Economist.

- I have re-bought certain video games just because they came out again with a couple of bonus features, or a demo or something else trivial.

- I wear t shirts with slogans in Japanese.

- I have a STARS zippo, & a Naruto ring.

- I consider God Hand to be one of the best games on PS2.

- Just look at my avatar, for Christ's sake!
