I just start listening through some of my songs and really listening to the words and it got me thinking, wow this is really meaningful. So what is the most poetic/meaningful lyrics you have heard lately.
I will get the ball rolling here. "Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel Is just a freight train coming your way"-No leaf clover - Metallica It really makes me think about heaven and hell and how we can be so easily deceived by the hopes of heaven.
"All of that time you thought I was sad, I was trying to remember your name"
"This scar is a flec on my porceline skin, tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in. Now you're outside me you see all the beauty, repent all your sins."
"There's one thing I want to say so I'll be brave, you were what I wanted, I gave what I gave, I'm not sorry I met you, I'm not sorry it's over, I'm not sorry there's nothing to say."
All from "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" by STARS, I just love the way the words flow together and really evoke varied feelings about relationships and how hard they can be sometimes.
"You climb out the chimney, and meet me in the middle, the middle of the town. Since there's no one else around, we let our hair grow long, and forget all we used to know. Then our skin gets thicker, from living out in the cold."
From "Neighborhood #1: Tunnels" by The Arcade Fire. Kind of an interesting look at alienation and indifference in the world.
All around me are familiar faces Worn out places, worn out faces Bright and early for their daily races Going nowhere, going nowhere Their tears are filling up their glasses No expression, no expression Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kinda funny I find it kinda sad The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had I find it hard to tell you I find it hard to take When people run in circles It's a very, very mad world mad world
And another one.
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold And she's buying a stairway to heaven And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed With a word she can get what she came for
There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure And you know sometimes words have two meanings In a tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
If you don't know these songs then find the nearest pimp and get yourself bitchslapped.
PS:There's something poetic about Freebird's solo. You can almost picture the tears full of win running down the guitarists face.
Well did she make you cry, Make you break down, Shatter your illusions of love, And is it over now, Do you know how, To pick up the pieces and go home.
"Any chimp can play human for a day, an' use his opposable thumbs to iron his uniform, and run for office on election day, fancy himself a real decision maker, Deploying all the troops and salt shakin, but it's a jungle where your war is made, and you'll panic and throw your own shit at the enemy, the camera pulls back to reveal your true identity, oh look it's a sheep in wolfs clothing, a smokin gun holding ape."
From "It's a Hit" by Rilo Kiley, hmmm, I wonder what this one is about...
"She is Everything to me the song that no one sings the unattainable She's a myth that i have to believe in all i need to make it real is one more reason Now i dont know what to do i dont know what to do when she makes me sing Slipknot Vermillion part 2
Enveloped in a sentiment, a sound that rushes over me. Engage an impulse to pretend I have a faith as pure. Not forgetting what it means to dream. Indulging everything. Entertaining thoughts that I've the strength of those I yearn to be. Cheers and tribute greet the saviours. Reckless thoughts survive. Anachronistic and impulsive.
And what will happen? Will I dream? I am too scared to close my eyes. For a second please hold me. None can change in me these things that I believe. But I don't know what happens now. I am too scared to close my eyes.

When I have nothing left to feel When I have nothing left to say I'll just let this slip away.
I feel these engines power down. I feel this heart begin to bleed as I turn this burning page.
Please forgive me if I bleed. Please forgive me if I breathe. I have words I need to say. Oh so very much to say.
And whose life do I lead? And whose blood do I bleed? Whose air do I breathe? With whose skin now do I feel?
I'm supposed to walk away from here. I'm supposed to walk away from here.
And whose life do I lead? Whose blood do I bleed? Whose air do I now breathe? I'm convinced there's nothing more.
The day you died I lost my way. The day you died I lost my mind.
What am I supposed to do? Is there something more?
The engines power down. Like a soldier to his end I go. Because I'm convinced that there is nothing more.
and whose life do I lead and whose air do I breathe? With whose skin and whose blood do I feel?
What happens now? Have I done something wrong?
Forgive my need to bleed right now. Please forgive my need to breathe But I've so much to say and it wouldn't matter anyway. You're not here to hear these words that I must say and I'm convinced inside that there is nothing more.
Whose life do I lead? Whose air do I breathe. Whose blood do I now bleed? With whose skin now do I feel?
I have nothing left to say. I have nothing left to feel. Am I supposed to let this go now, let darkness come and take you away?
Hmm, forgive my saying so, but there are a couple of pretty pants examples in this thread. Lets roll out a proper lyrics Legend; Mr Bob Dylan.
"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief, "There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief. Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth, None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."
"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke, "There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke. But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate, So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl, Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.
a decent theme song for anyone who has ever ended up outsmarting themselves, thinking things through so hard that they end up missing their chance altogether.
Poets of the Fall - "Clevermind"
Looking at the road that rises up ahead I thought I'd learned a thing or two But this is where it's all made new N' I gotta throw my hands up I can't go on if I can't stop
Look the leaves are dead The moments gone, there's no surrender Forever now unsaid The words that might've warmed December Cos it's all inside your head Like fragments of a dream you remember So never mind, your clever mind, never mind me
Staring at the ceiling from my bed I thought I'd earned a chance or few Thought I'd be paid in due Time isn't made for waiting Past isn't worth debating
Look the leaves are dead...
Feeling like a fool again Just need a new direction a new beginning , a new beginning I can't hold back and I can't hold on It's all about gratification See me running, see me running
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage? How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have you found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.
"In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade and he carries the reminders of every glove that's laid him down or cut him 'till he cried out in his anger and his pain, "I am leaving, I am leaving" but the fighter still remain"
From "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkle, one of my favorite songs.
Apologies for only having one. I'll post some more when they come to me. I keep thinking of Iron Maden for some reason...
My favorite is "No more tears for you paddy's lament"
Wipe the blood from your lip With the flesh of your hand Theres no thorn in the side left to grow So lets cherish the names that we lost for an age With the ruex now the supper must go Where traditions they blend lives a home on the mend The grass glistens now for alls eyes So lets sever the shame we have come to reclaim With the waters retreat 'neath the shore With the red rose pales lay a thousand graves, many warm Where the ghost still haunt for the day we come to live for
Don't look back For whats dead now is safe They exiled, a home where the soul kept safe Take me back on the crest of a wave No more tears for you paddy's lament No more tears No more paddy's Lament
Rip the tree from his heart Theres no sorrow tonight For once banished dreams sleep divine Where the silence you hear is the prosper we shared The only blade is a razor sharp smile Still the church bell rings the collective sings that still roam But the only thing left is the pain of nothing once more
Don't look back For whats dead now is safe They exiled, a home where the soul kept safe Take me back on the crest of a wave No more tears for you paddy's lament No more tears No more paddy's Lament
Grab the leaf of the branch from the tree in the ground Where the roots claimed the earth many toiled To a land that now stands under no-ones command And her beauty let no man destroy So remember the gun and the damage it's done The last drop as been spilled for you and I Let there be no despair for the ruex we once shared Brush the tear from the eye that still shines
Where the red rose pales lay a thousand graves many more Where the ghost still haunt for the day we come to the fore
Don't look back For whats dead now is safe They exiled, a home where the soul kept safe Take me back on the crest of a wave No more tears for you paddy's lament
Don't look back For whats dead now is safe They exiled, a home where the soul kept safe Take me back on the crest of a wave No more tears for you paddy's lament No more tears for you paddy's lament No more tears No more paddy's Lament
Insomnia taunts me, I turn on my TV, Rapt in the arms of a galaxy spiral. Heard a sea-shell hid its secret as well, This nexus is key to our planet's survival.
One precious moment it all became clear; Brain-cloud-haze lifted by euphoric fear. To the unknown my mind's eye directed; Beheld every mote in creation connected.
No more Hereafter, eugenics our master, Sectarist lecture mere witless hubris. Humanity's blunder was ceasing to wonder; Why are we here; what's the meaning of this?
Virtual church without actual sages; Souls under scrutiny, rats in glass cages. Enigmas deciphered are no longer needed; Last words of warning unheard or unheeded.
We're all hooked-up to the vast karmic internet; Each of our souls on te end of its fibre. One sacred fact that we can't download yet; The truth is we share the same service-provider.
The atheist plays whilst the orthodox pray. Fundamentalists freak-out as humanists scoff. A headlong collision 'twixt science and religion; There'll be Hell to pay when one day God logs-off.
One day the dreamers died within us When all our answers never came We hid the truth beneath our skin but Our shadows never looked the same
A ghost is all that's left Of everything we swore we never would forget We tried to bleed the sickness But we drained our hearts instead We are, we are the dead
And when we couldn't stop the bleeding We held our hearts over the flame We couldn't help but call it treason After that we couldn't fill our frames After that our shadows never looked the same
A ghost is all that's left Of everything we swore we never would forget We tried to bleed the sickness But we drained our hearts instead We are, we are the dead
In summers past we'd challenge fate With higher pitch and perfect aim And standing fast, we'd radiate A light we loved but never named But the answers never came And our shadows never looked the same
A ghost is all that's left (we are the ones who lost our faith) Of everything we swore we never would forget (can we be saved?) We tried to bleed the sickness But we drained our hearts instead We are, we are the dead (we are the ones who lost our faith) A ghost of everything we thought but never said (can we be saved?) We tried to bleed the sickness But we drained our hearts instead
We are the ones who lost our faith We dug ourselves an early grave We are the dead, can we be saved?
I'm tired and feeling hateful I'm tired and I can't breathe So tired that I would be grateful If you closed the door when you leave That's me diggin' my heels in That's me with the holy ghost 'Scuse me but I don't remember Where were you when I needed you most
And I'm tired of the sky As you claw at my eyes As I wait for the flood I swim in blood As I crawl to my knees And I beg your disease Taste the ice on your breath As you catch your death
I close my eyes Embrace the wave Deliver me
Hey you, the voice of reason Hey you, are you listening to me It's you that I can't believe in I don't buy what I don't see Say goodbye cause I don't need
And I'm tired of the sky As you claw at my eyes As I wait for the flood I swim in blood As I crawl to my knees And I beg your disease Taste the ice on your breath As you catch your death
And I'm tired of the sky As you claw at my eyes As I wait for the flood I swim in blood As I crawl to my knees And I beg your disease Taste the ice on your breath As you catch your death
I close my eyes Embrace the wave Abandon me Save the day that I won't see Deliver me
Apologies in advance for a long post, but I got a couple to post:
Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw
You got a question? Please don't ask it It puts the lotion in the basket You say bigger's better but bigger's better White boy dressed up like a Figure drawn inside a toilet on the wall The world is round, My square don't fit at all
They say those who can't just instruct others & act like victims or jilted lovers You can't lose it if you never had it Disappear man. Do some magic You want a reason ? How is about because You ain't a has been if you never was
I sound like this Scared to say what is your passion So slag it all Bitter's in fashion Fear of failure's all you've started The jury is in, VERDICT: Retarded, I'm so tired, I'm wired too I'm a mess I guess I'm turning on the screw
So familiar and overwhelmingly warm This one, this form I hold now
Parabol/Parabola - Tool
Embracing you, this reality here This one, this form I hold now So wide-eyed and hopeful
Wide-eyed and hopefully wild We barely remember what came before this precious moment Choosing to be here right now, hold on, stay inside This body holding me, reminding me that I am not alone in This body makes me feel eternal, all this pain is an illusion
-:-
We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment We are choosing to be here right now, hold on, stay inside This holy reality This holy experience, choosing to be here in
This body This body holding me Be my reminder here that I am not alone in This body This body holding me Feeling eternal, all this Pain is an illusion
Alive!
In this holy reality In this holy experience, choosing to be here in
This body This body holding me Be my reminder here that I am not alone in This body This body holding me Feeling eternal, all this Pain is an illusion
Swirling round with this familiar parable Spinning, weaving round each new experience Recognize this as a holy gift and Celebrate this chance to be Alive and breathing, the chance to be Alive and breathing
The Widow - The Mars Volta
He's got fasting black lungs Made of clove splintered shardes They're the kind that will talk Through a weezing of coughs
And I hear him every night In every pore And every time he just makes me warm
Freeze without an answer Free from all the shame Must I hide? Cause I'll never Never sleep alone
Look at how they flock to him From an isle of open sores He knows that the taste is such Such to die for
And I hear him every night On every street The scales that do slither Deliver me from...
Freeze without an answer Free from all the shame Then I'll hide Cause I'll never Never sleep alone
Oh lord Said I'm bloodshot for sure Pale runs the ghost Swollen on the shore
Everynight in every pore The scales that do slither Deliver me from...
Freeze without an answer Free from all the shame Then I'll hide Cause I'll never Never sleep alone
Freeze without an answer Free from all the shame Let me die Cause I'll never Never sleep alone
"If you die" you said "So do i" you said... But it ends the day you see how it is There is no always forever... Just this... Just this...
"If you die" you said "So do I" you said But it ends the day you understand There is no if... just and
There is no if... just and
There is no if...
There is no if- The Cure
This is hard i love poetic lyrics all my favourite artists use poetry in their lyrics (except maby sex pistols)
Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup, They slither while they pass ,they slip away across the universe Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind, Possessing and caressing me. Jai guru deva, om Nothing's gonna change my world, Nothing's gonna change my world. Nothing's gonna change my world. Nothing's gonna change my world.
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes, They call me on and on across the universe, Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box They tumble blindly as they make their way Across the universe Jai guru deva, om, Nothing's gonna change my world, Nothing's gonna change my world. Nothing's gonna change my world. Nothing's gonna change my world.
Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing Through my opened ears inciting and inviting me Limitless undying Love which shines around me like a million suns, It calls me on and on Across the universe Jai guru deva, om, Nothing's gonna change my world, Nothing's gonna change my world. Nothing's gonna change my world. Nothing's gonna change my world.
Jai guru deva Jai guru deva Jai guru deva Jai guru deva
Across the Universe - The Beatles
Well she's up against the register with an apron and a spatula with yesterday's deliveries, and the tickets for the bachelors she's a moving violation from her conk down to her shoes but it's just an invitation to the blues
and you feel just like Cagney looks like Rita Hayworth at the counter of the Schwab's drug store you wonder if she might be single she's a loner likes to mingle got to be patient and pick up a clue
she says howyougonnalikem over medium or scrambled anyway's the only way be careful not to gamble on a guy with a suitcase and a ticket gettin out of here it's a tired bus station and an old pair of shoes but it ain't nothing but an invitation to the blues
but you can't take your eyes off her get another cup of java and it's just the way she pours it for you joking with the customers and it's mercy mercy Mr. Percy there ain't nothin back in Jersey but a broken-down jalopy of a man I left behind and a dream that I was chasin and a battle with booze and an open invitation to the blues
but she's had a sugar daddy and a candy apple Caddy and a bank account and everything accustom to the finer things he probably left her for a socialite and he didn't love her 'cept at night and then he's drunk and never even told her that he cared so they took the registration and the car-keys and her shoes And left her with an invitation to the blues
'Cause there's a Continental Trailways leaving local bus tonight, good evening you can have my seat I'm stickin round here for a while get me a room at the Squire the filling station's hiring I can eat here every night what the hell have I got to lose got a crazy sensation, go or stay and I've got to choose and I'll accept your invitation to the blues
oh my god! how has stairway to heaven not been mentioned? or any led zep for that matter. yes the whole song is now a cliché and the lyrics are more pseudo-meaningful than anything but still!
Temptation's page flies out the door You follow, find yourself at war Watch waterfalls of pity roar You feel to moan but unlike before You discover That you'd just be One more person crying.
See the animal in his cage that you built Are you sure what side you're on? Better not look him too closely in the eye Are you sure what side of the glass you are on? See the safety of the life you have built Everything where it belongs Feel the hollowness inside of your heart And it's all Right where it belongs
[Chorus:] What if everything around you Isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you think you know Is an elaborate dream? And if you look at your reflection Is it all you want it to be? What if you could look right through the cracks? Would you find yourself Find yourself afraid to see?
What if all the world's inside of your head Just creations of your own? Your devils and your gods All the living and the dead And you're really all alone? You can live in this illusion You can choose to believe You keep looking but you can't find the woods While you're hiding in the trees
[Chorus:] What if everything around you Isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you used to know Is an elaborate dream? And if you look at your reflection Is it all you want it to be? What if you could look right through the cracks Would you find yourself Find yourself afraid to see?
And the rain comes And the world is on my head Crave the sun But I can't get out of bed - A Lot Like Me (The Offspring)
Chocolate Rain Makes the best of friends begin to fight Chocolate Rain But did they know each other in the light? - Chocolate Rain (Tay Zonday)
Hands on the mirror, can't get much clearer Can't make this all go away Now that you're bleeding, you stare at the ceiling And watch as it all fades away - Because of You (Nickelback)
Time is a train Makes the future the past Leaves you standing in the station Your face pressed up against the glass - Zoo Station (U2)
Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and Desert you - Never Gonna Give You Up (Rick Astley)
And I couldn't copy and paste this next one (curse you internet)
Four Freshmen Locked Out As The Sun Goes Down - No Kids
And pretty much the best beginning of a chorus ever: Stove burns, on my hands! Show them, to my friends! Courtship Dating - Crystal Castles It's funny because after that the line is 'Make you participate' but it sounds sort of like 'Make you forget the cake'.
I just start listening through some of my songs and really listening to the words and it got me thinking, wow this is really meaningful. So what is the most poetic/meaningful lyrics you have heard lately.
I will get the ball rolling here.
"Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Is just a freight train coming your way"-No leaf clover - Metallica
It really makes me think about heaven and hell and how we can be so easily deceived by the hopes of heaven.
