I might add to this a means of taking people off of your friends list (is there a way that I'm missing) I'm not so fond of having the list of non-active users pile up.

Eyclonus:
Whislt I agree that another forum for user fiction would clean up the off-topic forum, would that not create just a raging inferno of flame wars as people usually do take criticism of creative work more harshly then someone critiquing their game reviews.

As the person who suggested a fictional works forum, I will note that on the occasions that I have posted fiction, I have been fully prepared for (and in some cases, actively seeking) full criticism of my work. I was disappointed when nobody shredded Of Unfortunate Circumstances, and then there was The Futile Effort and A Dirty Situation, both stories which I actively require criticism for, rather than the silence that my works normally receive.

Switch to the 'List' or 'Game Profiles' view and there's a delete option on the right. It should probably be added to their profile header too though (since you can add them through the header). I think I'll do that right now, actually.

Thanks, Virgil, I did not see that.

Why doesn't this thread have Sticky status? Seriously, this is the perfect thread to stick...

RAKtheUndead:
I'd be interested in moving creative material in the Off-Topic Discussion forum to its own holding point, if the current trend towards posting fiction is to be accepted (a trend that I think I am unfortunately responsible for - I apologise now and ask for forgiveness, moderators, for I was not looking for pointless ego-boosting, but instead someone to give me actual useful criticism, much as NewClassic seeks to do with his own material). It has always struck me as strange that a site which holds the idea that any of us could submit material and potentially have it published if it is of sufficient quality - I don't think I'd have found another professional gaming site which would even think about my Spacewar! article, for instance - does not have a separate section for people's fictional or artistic material.

Forgive me for coming down on the necro-ing a possibly dead horse, but I'd really like to second this idea again. It's a really, really good idea, and it seemed overlooked. Or, at least, not commented on.

Could we have a shoutbox. Or would that be too spamable?

A forum specifically for people's articles and stories sounds like an excellent idea to me.

I think you should be told the reason why your thread gets locked. The thread I'm referring to is >>> http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.71723#734908 <<< I think you can see who shut the thread down, twice, I just wanted to know why? I think others would want to know why their threads are closed for seemingly non-existant or unjust reasons.

People ask the mods to close them for whatever they deem necessary.

You're not required to know why. This isn't a democracy. This is a benevolent dictatorship.
Don't question the mods' actions, simply respect them and move on.

I've got a suggestion concerning quotes. How about notification via a message if someone replies to one of your posts?

That way if someone raises a counterargument or something of the sort you'll know about it without having to crawl through each thread you've posted in recently.

In a fit of irony (as this will message you), just posting to say this has happened to me, so it's likely now in effect. Kinda neat, and good idea.

Something amaising that I noticed, was this:

starting yesterday, when you are the first poster on a new page, and you click on the "Most recent post" Icon on your profile... get this

It freaking goes to the new page!!!

I know, it's amaising!!

would limiting the replies to say 3, or having a character limit work, anything to clean up the quote walls that appear with someone quoting a 3 paragraph essay and just saying haha awesome post ultrajoe at the end

Essay? im quoted much more frequently for my epic-isms.

But your point stands, could there be a limit to the size of a quote? if someone wanted to reply to a huge post, they would need to break it down and address each point separately.

It encourages intelligent response, reduces the chance that people will quote text walls unthinkingly without reading them and just plain stops people quoting damn text walls.

Nobody's going to do it? Does anybody know? Fine. Guidelines as said by The Joe

Joe:

  • Quoting. Don't break up a person's post into individual sentences and clauses. It clutters up the page and makes it harder for other users to enjoy the forums. If you wish to respond to a particularly lengthy post, just quote the first paragraph for reference and address the entire post.

Yeah, I tracked that one down yesterday. Didn't think many people would notice, but I guess I was wrong ;)

Also, if someone quotes you in a post, you get a PM now. Making the PM notification more obvious is still on the to-do list, as is allowing PMs to send you emails.

I'm just going to say while this thread is on the front page that I am concerned about all the religiousity of a number of the threads recently. I know it is simply a trend of the past few days, but it is not a trend I am at all happy with and I am concerned it will go on.

Because they are so off the wall of the forum's core message and hit such a hard point to discuss it is one of those topic types I think should be added to the "list thread" / "vs thread" auto lock practice.

I've mentioned before, I know, and will continue to, this is a point which I am taking very seriously.

Yeah, I noticed that there was a PM in my inbox that led me back here... funny you should mention it while quoting me

There is already some CSS to prevent the worst visual attributes of quote walls - you may notice that after repeated nesting they start to fade out and/or disappear. Beyond that, it would be up to the moderators and peer pressure to regulate, not code - there are too many grey areas involved to put that sort of limit in.

i just checked out the escapist job board. I live in Vancouver, BC which is a major location for development studios and there is a huge international population that frequents this site.

I would suggest expanding the job board to include more international studios (Bioware, Ubisoft, Relic, Propoganda, etc.) and have the search parameters be "settable" for non U.S. citizens.

I have a suggestion regarding the "You got quoted!" Messages.
Can there be an option to subscribe to a thread and recieve a PM regarding people quoting you in THAT thread?

Actually, scratch that, a thread subscription option of any sort would be nice.

I'm asking because I'd like to be informed when some of my posts are responded to, but there's others I simply don't care about - I make a post that I don't expect to have quoted as a one-off observation in a thread I don't wish to revisit... See my reasoning? So, a thread subscription option would be nice.

You know though, I actually do have an Idea for something that could be done here

you could give the PM system a "Preview" button

I can't tell you how many times that I've sent a PM to somebody with colored words, or quotes, only to go back into the "Sent items" column and see that it just looks like gibberish because I missed a bracket, or something

so yeah, a preview button for the PMs would be nice

For the love of God, no signatures.

If I want to know someone's favourite quote from The Matrix I'll PM them.

Here's one, why do some posters comment on someones grammar and spelling and not the actual topic?

1, this just happened to me, 2, is this comment alright in this topic because I'm not entirely sure?
