as i know most of us are music fans. i was kinda wondering where everyone gets most of their music

personally i go to a local record shop, it's a great store that specializes in more eclectic stuff rather than the top 40 stuff, so they have a good healthy selection of "import" stuff at a very reasonable price. and they have some good used cd scores as well, got a couple really rare cds in their used section, namely the long out of print, mail-in/tour edition of download's charlie's family

i do occasionally go to chain stores cause they have the X/$X deals that you can't really get at the local stores

i have never nor do i plan on getting stuff via itunes, i'd rather have a physical copy

on occasion i get off the label themselves or to a friend who runs an online store, Storming The Base http://www.stormingthebase.com

for those wondering what sam the recordman is, if you watch a few movies, the incredible hulk being the latest, you can see the iconic sign of the main store in toronto. the oringal owner used to be able to track any record he had in the store, if you mentioned one song or something, it was freaking amazing to watch, sadly the store and chain are mostly closed now :|

Local record store! Honestly, with the music I want, it's generally the only place I can go. Although there was that time I asked about a cd and they told me to buy it online. Jerks. Ended up emailing the band, and got it for free! I also buy cds from the big box guys sometimes (much cheaper) and very rarely I'll buy a song on iTunes.

I will not pay 16.99 for a CD in HMV. People use to get hanged for highway robbery.

I go to music stores, and they have plenty here in NYC. Nothing beats spending dead hours just going through disk after disk after disk and discovering records you never thought even existed. Amazon and E-bay are also pretty awesome.

If ever there was a time I've wanted to vote twice on a poll, this is it. For me, it's chain stores and piracy. Now that I live in a city, though, I really should switch to local record stores (and piracy).

not sure about other hmv's but the ones around here are horrid for back catalog stuff, they must price the X/$X and specially priced cds at one price HOWEVER the stuff on the shelf is up to the manager to price what ever way they want

the one in my city, the manager HATES metal and punk but loves britney and all the teeny bopper crap. so the metal albums are prices closed to $30 a piece, while the teeny bopper stuff is under $20.

Every now and then I use HMV, but only rarely. Crap catalogue, overpriced (£13.99 for a 8 track CD?). Plus they've muscled out all the indie record shops. So now I usually stop off at the Pirate Bay, then go see the band afterwards.

I hate the X/$X thing. I have to buy certain cds or I get ripped off, it sucks, a lot. The pricing seems extremely redundant. What is it based on?

Chain stores mostly. When I go shopping there is a big HMV there so I pop in every now and again.

some record labels give out free discs to the band as a bonus, meaning that they make 100% of those discs that they sell at shows.

i dowload music via peer to peer services, but i spend my money on bands that i enjoy where they receive the biggest cut. shirts and discs at the live show.

I'm a collector. Unless I have the authentic CD in its original packaging, I don't really feel like I own the music.
I don't actually listen to the CDs, I rip them to my computer, but knowing that I have a hard copy just in case my hard drive crashes or something else (like iTunes rearranging all my folders), that I can just rerip the music and listen to it again.

Plus should I ever meet one of my favorite artists, it'd be kind of embarrassing to say, "Yeah, I downloaded all your albums." And if I did meet them, I'd need something to autograph.

It's a bunch of independent artists who release their music for free.

Theres a great record shop in the city called "Rocking horse" that I go too. Everything from free jazz to extreme black metal. I shop at Sanity most of the time though mainly because its closer. Gigs are great too.. I've picked up some great local acts for like $5 =D

Somtimes I download stuff too.. We all know Lily Allen doesnt need the $2.50 she would get from me buying her album =P

Buy? What is this 'Buy' you speak of?... Yeah I'm a dirty pirate, but I just can't afford to get all the music I want otherwise. Totally lame excuse, I know, but I'm sticking to it. If I am going to buy CDs then I'll usually go to Fopp.

I'm lucky to live in one of the few cities in Scotland that Fopp is still open in :D

JB HiFi. $10 Australian ain't that bad for a CD, as opposed to the $17 iTunes charges
