If your "good" and follow all of society's rules, you'll go to Paradise and forever bask in happiness and sunshine flowers, but if you act out of line, do something society considers bad, than you will be subjected to eternal pain and suffering. |

I went to a private high school that was high into religion, and basically all we learned in grade 10 religion class was how everything in the Bible is a lie and shouldn't be taken seriously. Half the time we discussed how Jesus was real and the other half we talked about how his entire life is just a metaphor for us. Either way, it really opened me up. Here's my personal opposition to religion in general, and I respect others who choose to put their faith into a church. I kind of think, with religion you're saying 'If you follow our tenants and be a nice person, God will provide for you and guide your path. Why can't we say if we are a nice person, and do good to others, then WE will be in charge of our own destiny? Others put faith in a deity, I choose to put my faith in HUMANITY. To appropriate from Bill Clinton, there is nothing wrong with the world that can not be fixed with what is right with the world. We don't need to place our faith in a higher power to lead lives of love for our fellow man, just ourselves. |

I don't put all historians in the same boat as the holocaust debaters I don't put all geologists in with the flat earth society And i would kill myself before taking string theorists as indicators of all physicists. So please, can i not be included with the fire-and-brimstone crowd under the very unfair blanket of 'Religious'? Just a thought... although admittedly through my own self-criticizing habits i made myself into a bit of an agnostic, but i work in strange ways. |

I don't personally (not sure if you're referring to me, or just a general sentiment), I know plenty of religious people who aren't whackos, same as I know plenty of muslims who don't hate the US. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1767 Joined: 13 Feb 2008 | Having been exposed to quite a bit of what would be called "sound doctrine" over the years, I have a few things to say about the stereotypical "God loves you but if you even look the wrong direction you are so screwed it's not even funny" view of Christianity. I use the term Christianity very generally. Ok, first things first. Those who are either going to be offended by reading this, and proceed to flame about it, please just don't say anything. God's old testament rules. Absolutely wacko. I don't think I have ever called anything wacko before. Ugh. Scarification of animals (and the odd daughter), random oaths, very very specific pillaging guidelines, lots of blood, etc. Yeah. The thing is, when Christ came down and did his thing, God said that we can ditch all that. So that's pretty sweet. God is not a bloodthirsty deity out to make you suffer. The point of God's rules is to keep you from destroying yourself. Secondly, the whole "be a nice person and go to heaven" thing. That wont work. Sorry. Neither will just going to church every Sunday. Nothing is gonna get you into heaven except Christ. There has to be actual faith, actual belief. Not just that God exists. Heck, Satan even believes in God, that's not the point. The point is to let Christ.... ugh. I'm getting preachy. You need a personal relationship with God. You need to allow Him into your life, let Him help you. You can't get into heaven on your own. He wants the glory, and He deserves it. That may sound huffy, but don't give up on me just yet. There are a couple verses that explain exactly what I am talking about. Romans 8:28 God wants you to enjoy Him. He isn't out for blood. There are countless verses associating our relationship with God to a parent/child relationship. He does know what's best for us, and loves us unconditionally, but we do not comply too easily. We think we know what's best for us, and we want it. We are destructive by nature. Anyone here who had parents or has children knows what I am talking about. Thirdly, the "love" thing. God does love you. It doesn't matter what you have done. God does not want you to go to Hell. He doesn't want any sinners to go to hell. Yeah, thats us. Sinners. Lastly, repentance. It is popular belief that you can just repent of anything and just get off the hook. Sadly, that isn't the way things work. A "good" person can end up in hell because their bad actions were still there. The most evil, unsavory child rapist can be absolved of their sins if they truly repent of them. God forgives all, but the person needs to be apologetic for their actions. Every single sin is a a slap to God. We cannot just go steal, say "oh sorry God" and get off the hook. We actually have to be sorry, and want to be forgiven. On that note, the Ten Commandments are actually just the beginning of sin. God says somewhere (sorry, can't find it) that even being angry at someone is the sinful equivalent of murder. Same for lust, etc. All sins are equally disgusting to God. Oh my goodness talk about wall of text. Wow. I didn't mean to write a whole freaking sermon. If you want some really really good depth on this stuff, listen to any of the sermons from my church's website. If you don't have any prior experience with this kind of religious tomfoolery, then do not start with the Consider Jesus series. It's really heavy stuff. Depressing to the untrained ear. I don't know if I should/can direct link, so please excuse. There. I am really sorry if I offended or confused anyone, but I had to cut it short after I realized it was 5:15 AM. |

Counterargument: Why the fuck should God prevent evil? How are we to ever learn! (Fondant just booked a suite in the second level of hell) Indeed, even if he were of a mind to prevent evil, I hardly see it as his responsibility. I believe it is the responsibility of humanity. And now for some general counterargument to the atheist-fundies: 1. Not all religions are burn-and-kill-the-unbeliever. In fact, 9/10ths of them simply instruct people to live a good life, obey the law and generally act reasonably. It just happens that burn-and-kill gets the best TV ratings. And as acting as a means of social control, they are contributing to an ordered and peaceful world. 2. Tis far better to believe in God, for if he does exist, there s a far better chance of you getting into heaven with belief than without. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2525 Joined: 3 Mar 2008 | Read Leviticus (The shame of Christianity). The rules in that are hilarious. Also, I'm pretty sure that there's a part in the Bible that condones child slavery. Can't remember which part though... |
I find it strange that in the bible it gives you rules and if you dont follow them no matter what. You are going to end up in a place where you're going to burn and feel pain that no human can imagine but. God loves you.
