I definitely have to agree on that one. I remember when I felt that way myself, either way I've moved on and I just love to listen to the song while throwing together montages of action oriented games. |

He can bring out deep anguish in a song like nobody else, even if it's not his song. I have to venture Hallelujah. Crap, it made me cry during Shrek. Shouldn't have paid attention to the lyrics. Let's see... bah, I'm such a girl. Vesti La Giubba from Pagliacci. Music of the Night, especially sung by Michael Crawford. That one's made me teary since I was five. Ah, of course. Here's a good contribution. Learn to be Lonely. Go ahead, look it up. Phantom of the Opera. I hadn't heard it until I was looking up something else and stumbled on it in the related links. Child of the wilderness Who will be there for you Never dreamed out in the world So laugh in your loneliness Learn to be lonely ...now pardon me, I can hardly read the lyrics without sobbing. |

Ultrajoe, I can honestly say that the strongest emotion I took from this thread is a huge dollop of schadenfreude. Suck it down Mr I Don't Listen To Sad Music. |

this is exactly why i don't listen, i searched 'sad music' and got this. I listened to some to find an example... and now i'm sad... sad is un-fun, i'm regretting doing it... But that does not make #15 any less sad, and me any less depressed from this thread. |

ultrajoe thank you, that song totally slipped my mind, I love it though. -I, hurt myself today. |

Yes, love that song, and it is quite saddening. I second that one.
One that would never have popped into my head, as I was thinking more about lyrics. But yes, a definite, muchos agreement. On a tangent from that, does anyone know the name of the composer or the music that was used in the trailer for Sunshine? I've heard it in other trailers too, but can't think what at the minute!! |

Copy Clerk Posts: 62 Joined: 4 Jul 2008 | Matchbox twenty have a whole lot of depressing songs - for instance "Kody" from their first album which deals with the death of a friend, and "Back to Good", which is basically a complaint against adult relationships going sour. Then there's Long Day in which the lyrics suggest a person is on the brink of offing himself, and then there's "Leave" in which a relationship again, goes to hell and everyone is unhappy. Then there's the recent "How Far We've Come" in which he complains that the whole world's going to hell. But the saddest lyrics that I've personally heard are "Rest Stop" from Matchbox 20. Just three miles from the rest stop She said - while you were sleeping Just three miles from the rest stop She said - while you were sleeping She said - while you were sleeping While you were sleeping - Cheerful, huh? Ah the broken husk of human relations never ceases to bring a smile to my face. Of course, there's probably a whole lot of foreign language songs which are worse. Apparently there's a song called "Gloomy Sunday", which has been covered numerous times and was translated into English. |

Yeah, it was on QI (UK Quiz show with nearly impossible questions. They get 4 comedians as the contestants, and they get points for being Quite Interesting). I recall that 'Gloomy Sunday' is, officially, the most depressing song, EVER. |

Paperboy Posts: 46 Joined: 12 Jul 2008 | I always found "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica pretty depressing, even though I'm not 100% on what it's about. For a good ol' depression fest, try "The Unquiet Grave" by Kate Rusby. It's about how in the past women were still considered betrothed to their husbands even after they had died. That and mourning, and missing a deceased loved one in general. How pleasant is the wind tonight The twelve months and a day being up Oh don't you see the fire sweetheart Mourn not for me my dearest dear It's a bit of a killer lol |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 925 Joined: 25 Jan 2008 | One of my favourites is Nothing Ever Happens by Del Amitri, which is one of the most poetic songs I've ever heard in my life: Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow Gentlemen time please, you know we cant serve anymore Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow Telephone exchanges click while theres nobody there Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow. In addition, I'd like to add 'Intervention' by Arcade Fire, a song about religious despotism: "Working for the church while your life falls apart, Singing Hallelujah with a fear in your heart, Every spark Of friendship and love will die without a home, Hear the soldier groan "We'll go at it, alone." |

I've always found it very sad, too, but it's not really. It's about James Hetfield's long-distance relationship with his girlfriend while on tour. In fact, he wrote the first part while on the phone with her- the first few notes are all open, so can be played one-handed- but then I like to think he said "bugger off, I'm writing a song". Caution: This is all second-hand information from a friend. He may be wrong- I don't know. |

It's happy in an vaguely anti-establishment kind of way. "Forever trusting who we are," "Life is ours, we live it our way," "Trust I seek and I find in you," &c. It just sounds sad because it's slow and mellow. -- Alex |

All Apologies by Nirvana. It's the last song of their last studio album, and Colbain died not long after the album was released. It's a moody tune.
