I recall my first post being on a thread asking what video game characters we would want to kill, by the time I finally posted I had a list of ten, it was rather amusing to me.
SargentToughie: ooh, where to begin... lets start with the most obvious ones
1. Duke nukem, because his new game is never going to come out and I'm tired of hearing about it! 2. I'm not even going to start on Mario, everyone else that has an account here has him covered 3. Dias Flac from star ocean 2, because he is portrayed as this godlike warrior throughout the entire first disk and when he finally joins your team (if he joins your team) he's so freaking weak that your better off with freaking furry lover Noel! 4. Mayor from A.W. days of ruin, because for a nameless sub character he sure suffers from a horrible case of Doushe...itis? 5. Every list has to have a five 6. The lawn gnome from half live 2 ep.2 (I named him Rodger). That little rocket man caused me so much pain and suffering on the road to those 30 gamerpoints that I really was wanting to put a bullet in his head by the end of it. (the car parts were the worst). 7. Anyone that has evered appeared in a final fantasy game... 'nuff said 8. Kate from GTA 4, yeah I said it. I could'nt stand her 9. Team _____ grunt from pokemon, They're everywhere! 10. Dracula from castlevania (pick one... any one) because he NEVER EVER DIES!
Yes, it IS embarrassing. Thank you very much for bringing it to my attention. I can't believe I signed up to do a fart joke. I don't even like fart jokes.
werepossum: Dang. I wanted to suggest First Assault Recon Team. Or perhaps First Recon Encounter Detachment. (Hey, here comes F.R.E.D.)
nilcypher: Obviously, this is just opinion, but I truly dislike the Half-Life series, specifically the games Half-Life 2 and beyond.
My dislike of Half-Life 2 is an odd thing. Valve made a great engine, made believable and mostly likeable characters, a rich and beautiful world and set up an exciting back story. But I found HL2 to be one of the most sterile and least engaging games I have ever played. I wanted to like it, but I just didn't. Obviously this is just my opinion, and the franchise has enough fans to ensure it's survival well into the future.
I'd love to see KotOR and Neverwinter Nights sequels, but I want them done properly, which is a nice way of saying I don't want Obsidian anywhere near them. Similarly, I want Fallout 3 to be good. I am a keenly aware if the issues that Oblivion had, and I hope that Bethesda are too.
With the Nintendo franchises, while I enjoy the games, it wouldn't hurt to try some new ideas.
Here's my first post. I don't think I did too badly, luckily.
Young HSIAMetalKing: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl lived up to the hype. I had decided after playing GSC that I was going to lay down my Pokegear and let the series go on without me. The hype of DP hit me hard, though, and I succumbed because I needed something to do with my DS. 300 hours logged in that game, and I don't regret a single Poketastic one of them.
I was wondering what sort of post I first made to start it all off. Was it a speech of some sort? Did I remark that it was my first time and how I want to warm up to this place? Was it an agressive attack on a game of some sort or perhaps a personal detail of my life? All these things were listed through my head as I went to find this blast from the past.
And this is what I got:
PurpleRain: I'm a Half Life whore... so my votes with Episode 2. I just love the Half Life story so much.
Hmm. This is a little bit embarassing but after seeing the new Prince Of Persia video, I've done a complete U-Turn on my first post which was in a thread where loads of people thought that GTA should have been killed off before GTA4 was even released:
Strafe Mcgee: Everyone really wants to kill GTA before 4 comes out? The one game that really looks like that it's gonna deliver on what the series could be? Are you all crazy? If gta4 sucks then the series should die, but until then I'm waiting with my fingers crossed to see if Rockstar can actually make a proper living breathing city work.
And this is one that might get a bit of controversy... Prince of persia should end now. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the prince games, especially warrior within. Despite the needless swearing and rubbish music, it was a fantastic game that mixed the best of the first game with better combat and fantastic run-away-from-the-big-nasty-thing sequences. But the series was a trilogy, and now they've announce three new games to the series and a damn movie.
I'd prefer to think of the series as a classic trilogy that will stand as three of the best action-adventure games ever made but it runs the danger of becoming yet another money spinning franchise... And it means no assassins creed 2 for a while. If ever. Which SUCKS.
Yup.. I stand by everything apart from the Prince Of Persia thing.
Naturally, these are stereotypes that are usually pointed at the female gender. It makes me wonder: have we got it all wrong? In times of desperation, do females turn to the food stores for consolation?
Well, all stereotypes have a basis somewhere. Honestly though, it varies from person to person. My friend gorged herself on Oreos, ice cream, and anything unusually greasy when she was depressed, but I found I couldn't eat at all without puking it back up.
Although I recommend not doing the gorging thing: my dad used to be all skinny with a high metabolism too- he'd eat a whole pizza by himself. But now he's got a wonderful beer/pizza belly that he can't seem to get rid of, lol.
Not too shabby for a first post. I remember jumping in because of the "Guys have Questions, Girls have Answers" thread. It's only been a couple months, so I don't think my style has changed a whole lot other than I know most of the regulars better now and don't feel dumb joking around with them.
The lovable Saskwach: Well forgetting that according to observers throughout history the English language has been going to the dogs (for a good, as well as pretty right, example look up "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell) I really doubt "webspeak" is the greatest enemy of English. I'm much more afraid of an English that prizes the political doublespeak we hear a lot where people don't say what they mean and don't mean what they say (seriously, read that essay. It's good.). I don't expect or want most of webspeak's words and grammar to catch on but a book I read a few years back- can't remember the name- said that erosion, ie people taking shortcuts in their speech, was one of the main drivers of linguistic change. And without change in a language it becomes stale, old and locked into an archaic way of thinking. I'm not dissin' Shakespeare's English but if it had never changed from then until now we wouldn't have any words for any modern inventions or concepts. Again, I'm not saying webspeak should catch on, but instead that it probably won't and that its shortcuts and cheats are exactly the sort of changes that keep a language changing and modern.
It seems fitting that a topic on language tempted me from lurking. It's also quite fitting that I was a post whore within that thread; I haven't changed. Reading that thread, I seem to have been much smarter back then...
John Galt:
The start of it all
Hmm...seems good enough, the grammar and spelling is decent. Doesn't look like much has changed. Yep, I'm proud to not kick this post out into the rain like some homeless child.
Is it wrong that I remember that post like it was yesterday? I'm amazed that was your first post.
ultrajoe: Mixed feelings here, on one hand, i'm a Wii hater in the extreme.
on the other, i don't think Yahtzee really needed to dedicate 4:20 to ripping apart one of its most anticipated games for doing exactly what everyone expected it to do, sure, you needed to work to get some of the good characters, but if youve bought the game as a SSB fan, then thats not going to be a problem
humor... 6/10
that said, i do look forward to playing the game, not on my monolithic PS3 of raw power of course, i managed to fool a friend into buying one of those little white infuriating, inexplicably best-selling, gimmickly satisfying things.
(if you cant spot the above section for what it is, then i consider your rebuttal a worthy burden)
ah, i hear you think, Joe started as a comment whore!
This was my first post, and it is embarrassing as it shows I actually paid money for the above title (the thread was called "Why did I buy this?"). I had to confess to this shameful act so, not being Catholic, I decided a games forum would be suitable for my means.
I remember punching myself repeatedly for my idiocy in blind-buying a game. This is one of the only cases where I did no research whatsoever on a game before parting with hard-earned cash, I was simply bored with money to burn.
I have learnt my lesson, oh how I have learnt. But at what price? (Well, realistically: £39.99 inc p+p - but spiritually my soul is scarred).
juandonde: Big long post that 99% of you won't read.
Games of the PS1 era and a couple before then (plus some other stuff since I can't organize thoughts very well).
Final Fantasy Final Fantasy VII (7) got me into the final fantasy series. At first when I saw a very low resolution screen shot of it I thought all the characters where woodland critters (Barret looked kinda like a rabbit to me don't know why now). Anyway I picked up the game not knowing what lie ahead was quite possibly the greatest gaming experience I had ever at the time. I never knew that a story in a game could have such a gravitational pull that this game gave me. Well, except for the time I got lost in sector 6 and was stuck there for 16 hours. Oh yeah you know what I mean fan boys.
Then Final Fantasy VIII (8) came out and bam! another hit. This time the world was completely changed. No longer was the world powered by steam, it was the future! What was a miracle then (flying to outer space) became a reality now as you first went to the estar space station. Of course it lasted like 30 minutes, but still the story just as good (and people say I'm stupid, but I liked 8 better than 7).
Then came the release of Final Fantasy IX. No longer was the story so over the top dramatic like in the others. This time the story had just about everything, drama, romance, comedy, tragedy this felt like the most complete story ever. The characters were well developed and quite quirky in their own funny way.
I wanted to know what the originals where like so I decided to play the older ones in the series. Well, my friends you may say that the best villain was Sepheroth, but you are wrong. You have not seen a great villain until you have seen the likes of Kefka. He has a little advantage because I am quite scared of clowns and him being a psycho clown and everything and while this villain may at first seem like some sort of second banana miniboss, that is until he laughs. Oh what a laugh it was dare I say the best sound in all of Final Fantasy is kefka's laugh. He was a devious little bastard as well. Not satisfied with conquering a kingdom he would rather see it burn to the ground. He had quite the appetite for destruction and chaos. Also he poisoned a river and killed Cyan's entire family and the kingdom he was protecting (oooh spoiler). Then of course the ending, the most awesome longest best ending for going through the entire game. Also, if you can't tell by now it is my favorite Final Fantasy in the series. (Like it more than Chrono Trigger)
System Shock 2 Now if traditional RPG's are not your cup of tea perhaps non traditional ones are. I give you System Shock 2. If you have played the more recent Bioshock then you should be familiar with some of System Shock 2. Like the man at zero punctuation put it, "It's not like System Shock 2 it IS System Shock 2 just with a few things cut out." Some of those things are a real time inventory screen, much better specialization of classes, as well as a creepier villain. For some odd reason my favorite games don't necessarily need a hero with a huge back story that can go on longer than reading all of harry potter in one sitting, but a great villain (with a huge back story that can go on longer than reading all of harry potter in one sitting) that you may not even realize is a villain in the first place, or well you get an idea then you are not sure, then she gets a creepy voice and witty one liners, not to mention you are low on AP ammo in the recreation deck, and there are robots everywhere throwing ninja stars at you, then the ship turns upside down, and you see a church with an upside down cross, and the captain that was going to help you who was lying in a hospital bed is now lying dead on the ceiling after the ship turned upside down on you, and you wonder if maybe she did it on purpose or by accident.
Also it's 1 am and I should finish my English Final, but I have writers block at the moment so I shall keep running with this and maybe something will come up.
Half-Life Do I really need to say anything? Half-life 3, how many of you will get it?
Deus Ex Ah this was a great little game. In the beginning you are this noob with crap for skill points sneaking around the statue of liberty trying to stop the world from terrorists. Then it pulls a freaking 180 on you. Suddenly you are working for the terrorists (and you have more skill points so the game gets a little bit easier on you) fighting the guys you used to work for and then all the exploration and side quests and well, like System Shock 2, but longer...a lot longer. Although I don't know about you guys, but the antagonists kinda sucked in this game. I mean its like, "Blah blah blah ima be a god there is nothing you can do to stop me so i am going to be in my bubble here while- hey, what are you doing? Stop that! Hey, don't blow up those tanks, wtf! Don't go align yourself with helios! oooh thats it give me another 10 hours and im getting out of this bubble and whipping your biomod ass!" Ending is Big Explosion with the earth losing electricity or Big Electric light boogaloo or some other stuff that I can't remember right now.
Grand Theft Auto 2 Without this game I would have not bought any of the other Grand Theft Auto games.
Metal Gear Solid Still waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4 to be announced that it will also be released for the 360. DAMNIT HIDEO KOJIMA RELEASE IT FOR THE 360!!
Resident Evil While most people will say resident evil 4 is the best resident evil ever and by golly its awesome. Yes I agree with you, but it's not scary. Resident Evil 1-3 and code veronica (the original resident evil 4 imo) those where scary. Fuck this Spanish peasants dropping herbs out of their asses you had to find that shit. Of course you would also randomly find wolf coins to unlock secret underground space age top of the line laboratories, but at least the game scared the shit out of me. My only complaint was that if you, say missed picking up the grenade launcher and was stuck shooting arrows at the tyrant then needless you say you did have to start over if not from an earlier checkpoint to find the grenade launcher.
Have I bored you to death yet? Then I shall keep going muahahahahahaha!!!
Legend of Dragoon Bought it used at Gamestop baby! I played this for a week while I was in the Philippines. It was there I learned the ancient art of hitting X as fast as I could so I could make the spells I cast in that game super overpowered.
Thousand Arms Trust me when I say this. You want to play this game. Final Fantasy story in an actual anime setting. Btw when I say a final fantasy story I mean I like this game's story better than any final fantasy. I will say no more because I don't want to spoil any of it...unless someone else does ;).
Lunar Silver Star Story (or Lunar 2: Eternal Blue) Another great game, just...I bought it on the freaking gameboy advance and still had a great time with it. If you can get it for the Playstation though then trust me you should. You owe it to yourself to at least get the full experience of the game on a PS1.
Twisted Metal 2 I wish they would make another game like this one...(thats good at least)
Silent Hill 2nd scariest game...EVER!!!!!1!ELEVEN (FEAR is the first)
Dark Forces Was unique in that it was the first FPS that I played that had a jump button and the ability to look up and down. Then Dark Forces Jedi Knight came out and well, Kyle Katarn is quite an awesome Jedi.
Duke Nukem 3d Just thought I would toss that one out there (I played this after Dark Forces)
Serious Sam Just hold down the trigger and point at anything that moves. The first game where my trigger finger got tired and I had to actually take a break =O.
Well, I'm going to get back to my essay night alls.
Spinwhiz: My first post was about Steam and TF2. My first thread was a poll on Jedi vs Anyone else. I still think the Jedi can wipe out just about anyone 1v1.
The_Logician19: SNIP Topped off with my first ever apology...
The_Logician19: Forgive me, I rant. (sorry)
Yeah...and I wonder why everyone here hates me...
Apologies for the Lost reference. I thought it was funny.
I don't think anyone here hates you, we like you. Heck, I've probably offended half the regulars at one time or another and no one's sending me messages threatening my life or testicles, so you should be really popular.
And I thought the Lost reference was funny. I've never understood that show; it's like watching German language television, where I think I can almost follow the words but then realize I have no clue what's going on.
I don't even understand the Lost Counterstrike map.
Easykill: I wonder which is funnier; Ultrajoe's conceit, or the Logician's apologetic and slightly insecure manner...
No one hates you.
I'd say Logician's manner, simply because I'm a bastard.
And now for something completely different: Easykill, how come you don't post so often anymore? If you do, then where, since I haven't really seen you.
mine was on a review of the movie version of "I Am Legend"
the_tralfalmadorian: i thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but after i saw the movie i went home and read the book, and i gotta say, the movie didnt compare. that book was a masterpiece. I thought Smith's acting was beyond fantastic, but the rest of the movie was somewhat lack luster, and i do get so annoyed when an "adaptation" has fuck-all to do with the book.
in all, i give the movie a 3/5. good watch, especially if you havent read the book, but as always the book is far better.
that's about how i still post i guess. short little quips.
Easykill: I wonder which is funnier; Ultrajoe's conceit, or the Logician's apologetic and slightly insecure manner...
No one hates you.
I'd say Ultrajoe's is funnier because Logician's apologies P*** ME RIGHT OFF. It's just that right down at bone level I hate people always apologising: I wasn't angry until you made a big deal out of it.

Here is me pointing out a very dull bug in Super Mario 64, and a lovely arse kiss hello to the forum.
STRANGEST BUGS "I remember doing a 100% run through Super Mario 64, and getting each star in order. It was very satisfying, up until the point where I reached Dire Dire Docks and attempted the 'Pole Jumping For Red Coins' star.
When I arrived at the correct area, the moving poles above the water simply were not there, and didn't reappear no matter what I tried; restarts, seeing if they were invisible, etc.
Seeing as there was no other way of getting these red coins my 100% run through became impossible, leaving me with about 50 stars and no reason to continue. Bugger.
Also, hello. I'm Rob, I'm 23, I'm English, I used to be a games tester for EA, I'm a big Nintendo fan but mostly seem to only play COD4 or GTAIV, and I'm stoked to finally find a gaming forum filled with articulate, open minded gamers rather than the screaming fanboy turds you usually find. Marvelous.

Eh, my posting habits are a bit weird, sometimes I post at everything, other times nothing. Also, I was away for a week and couldn't really access the internet.

Yay for lists
