Why is EPIC the only descriptor that people use nowadays?

Seriously, I can't be the only one who's noticed this trend. It seems everyone has resorted to using epic to describe everything. Epic win, epic loss, epic fail, epic lol, and so on. I once listened to a discussion amongst students at my college (they were talking too friggin loudly, I wasn't eavesdropping) and they used the phrase "epic ______" about a dozen times!

People, we need new words. In closing, http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/epic

People describe things as epic because things are epic. So why wouldn't you describe it as epic?

Personally I've gotten used to describe any positive event that is about to happen as:

"Legen! ..wait for it... dary!"

I can only guess more people got the word "epic" in their vocabulary after playing World of Warcraft for some time and got hold of some equipment of Epic(purple) quality. And then went on using in other contexts to describe something that is awesome/grand/fantastic or so on.

I also wonder how many of those that use the word so elaboratly know what "epic" actually means?

EPIC WHINE

Its a catch phrase. A secret handshake for internet nerds. What else is there to say?

Epic comes from 4chan. If someone there did something funny or cool in a thread, then you'd get some form of the "epic" thing. I for one thing it's really been overused to the point of pissing me off immensely any time I hear it.

It seems like "epic" is just going the way of "awesome." I don't think anyone under 30 uses "awesome" only to describe breath-taking, awe-inspiring wonderment.

On a related note, I find games' and gamers' obsession with "epic" storylines annoying. Can't we have more nice, reasonably-scaled storylines? Every RPG doesn't have to be about saving the world in 50+ predictable plot twists followed by a final confrontation with anthropomorphic evil, does it?

People use Epic as "a secret handshake for nerds", as ReepNeep said. I heard somebody say "Epic Fail" the other day and I knew at once that he was a fellow nerd.

And enter the Douschebag army that adds Epic to everything because they're "Funny" and "Ironic"

I cannot stand people that say "Oh, Epic Win, right? Uhuhuhuhuh" to try to be funny. It's not funny. It's using something out of context, and you have never said it before. You only say it because you have heard other people say it, and found it funny. Acting like other people does not automatically make you a great comedian, it just makes you irritating.

A minor rant, but a good rant in my opinion.

It's a WoW term turned meme that leaked over to the 4chan forums.

I try to stay ahead of this by using more inspiring and vibrant adjectives.

Why do people use 'epic'? Because it's an epic word, it's that simple!

You want it all, but you can't have it.
It's in your face, but you can't grab it.
What is it?
It's it.

That's the only epic I know. ;-)

Epic, Awesome, Rad. Same meaning, different times. It'll blow over and get replaced by another word in time. Get used to it, or prepare to be frustrated the rest of your internet life :P

Quite true, actually. Its not often I agree with your points, JJ, but this is certainly something I concur with. People copying other people does not necessarily make it equally hilarious (if anything, the opposite occurs) when they say it. It is a shame that the people copying others are trying to hard to step back and notice this to begin with.

Hrrrm...mini epic rant.

It was EVERQUEST, not WoW that propagated most of the raid terminology.

dps, Epic, Pet-rape, DPS and others were born there, they just grew up in WoW.

And here I dispute; I have heard the 'epic' usage from a friend of mine who is as un-nerdly as one can get and still know the basic premise of a videogame.

Personally, I reserve the use of epic for when is deserving.

I use Epic, it's just an internet thing. The only thing I hate is people pronouncing "Pwned" and "Powned" or "Pawned". It's owned, people... no "Puh"-P sound.

Little kids saying it is just ... eh. The word is pretty much tarnished :(

I used epic win when my little ponies beat the crap out the little transformer toys of my colleague.

I like the transformer vs my little pony wars.

It's epic ;)

By the way, isn't any word that is over used annoying? Epic isn't the only meme that got annoying as soon the 'masses' got their hands on it. But on the other hand, sometimes memes are fun. I remember one time when a man was instructing a whole bunch of people, and at some point he yelled 'SILENCE'! and everybody yelled back 'I'll kill you!'. Wasn't set up beforehand, but it just triggered everyone's memes.

My personal favorite is cliche. Because right now, almost every game is trying to be epic. We don't have simple game plots anymore, like GTAVC, where all you wanted to do was make a crapload of money. Now everything has to involve the fate of the universe/Galaxy/country/World/Dimension/Planet/System. It's gotten to the point where a kid playing with action figures would have a more creative story.
