Gone Gonzo Posts: 2034 Joined: 16 May 2008 | also, I feel silly saying it, but Limp Bizkit's Rearranged has an awesome bassline as well and Cake's I Will Survive Cover but Tool's The Pot is tre magnifique [edit] sorry for the double post. |

Claypool is an amazing bassist, he's earned frontman status. |

alright, I wasn't trying to make an issue, I didn't even make a judgment call for you to defend against. |

This is dance rock music to space out to, you gotta get it. Also, try XTC's "Drums and Wires" and "Black Sea" good stuff there too. |

Just saying, not trying to start anything. I rarely actually HEAR the bassist in a band, I suppose you have to have a bassist ear to hear the bass lines. One notable exception is Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse, they all stop playing except the bassist, that's one way of making your bassist heard. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2034 Joined: 16 May 2008 | not hearing the bassline is normal unless it's a strong solo, a good bassist blends the guitar and the vocals with the drums. picking out the bassline does sometimes take a bassist's ear, but you WILL know the song is wrong without the bassline, even if you can't exactly pick it out |
Paperboy Posts: 18 Joined: 13 Aug 2008 | Do you mean just good basslines or just strong kinda "oofa" bass lines, like Tom Waits or something in that vein. And PIL is awesome. More Dance punk bands like The Rapture and The Arctic Monkeys have great bass lines. And DFA 1979 (Death From Above 1979) is the epitome of amazing bass, having just a bass and drum combination...and speaking of those kind of combos, check out Lightning Bolt as well, with every song being just crazy noise punk bliss. Their song Dracula Mountain is one such example. I think I may have overwhelmed some people... |

I have real life experience of that, turns out you really DO need your bassist at practice or you end up sounding like crap. |

Got all three of those. It's not as easy to hear XTC's bass as PiL's, but I definately agree. |

yes, guitars and drums do not mesh well at all by themselves. |

Pogo sticks - Animusic, watch it, is entertaining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh_D0G3k9Sk&feature=related If that didn't amaze you, and you haven't been exposed to the glory of animusic before, I suggest you watch this, which does have a bass line, and gives me chills. I have never been so affected by a youtube vid :P |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2148 Joined: 4 Nov 2007 | Agree with those who've suggested Iron Maiden; their chief (but not sole) songwriter is their bassist, which tells you something. If I had to suggest an album of theirs it'd be A Matter of Life and Death simply beacuse I love that album far more than any man should love an inanimate object. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 6984 Joined: 28 Nov 2007 | Fun fact: Steve Harris has to chalk up his fingers before each performance to avoid drawing blood by the end of the set, due to the way he plays bass. |
Paperboy Posts: 22 Joined: 4 Aug 2008 | Megadeth - Peace Sells But Who's Buying First one may have been said already. Also, I tend to agree with the people who said Primus, as Les Claypool is pretty much the undisputed master of bass guitar. |

hell yes. if you message me i have a recording of a solo by him that is fucking amazing. fortune faded is a favorite of mine with some great bass parts to it. |
Paperboy Posts: 20 Joined: 11 Dec 2007 | It's not really 'bass' but this band sure knows how to write some sexy rifts and is pretty damn dirty at making a drum/guitar combo sound so dynamic: The Black Keys. I might be missing the point though. So excuse me if this is not quite what you were going for. I would also say, Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes (they didn't use bass guitar until Elephant and beyond). However, if you are talking about drums via the double bass reference, then that would be in the Metal category and all I can say is Nightwish, but that is only because I am not one for Metal. Edit: I also have to give a shout out to The Red Hot Chilli Willies, as they were mentioned, and are freaking awesome. Also, Rage Against The Machine is ridiculous, just saw them live at Lolla. |

I dunno, I find bass/double bass/cello/cardboard box with rubber band lines sexy. Any good ones? Tank from cowboy bebob comes to mind. Mostly because I'm listening to it :)
