Anyone who likes the Alice works, LIKE ME, understands where the stories originated from and their point. They started as simply stories ol' Lewie would tell his friends daughter on fishing trips until she asked him to write them down. |

Beat Writer Posts: 209 Joined: 20 May 2008 | alice in wonderland was a great book even though the author was accused of being mentally ill but anyways a real acid trip would probably account for the sentence. |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 588 Joined: 25 Jun 2008 | I've taken plenty of acid, mushrooms, Ketamine (not all at once!) & other hallucinogenics in my time & although I've tripped, pretty hard at times, I've never seen anything like Alice in Wonderland or seen major things that weren't there. The biggest hallucination I had was staring at some South American guys curly black hair, which seemed to be moving & pulsating like an sea anemone, but that's just altered perception. I think there's a lot of misconception about the nature of acid hallucinations & acid trips, it alters your senses of perception somewhat, but never like you would see in a film or on T.V. Either that or I have a very strong mind which isn't very susceptible to major hallucinations & doesn't allow me to stray too far from reality. I am quite a logic thinker & level headed so that could be the case. Like TheNecroswanson said, Alice in Wonderland is from a fishing trip not acid trip. |

Beat Writer Posts: 133 Joined: 3 Jul 2008 | I can't say for certain that Lewis Carroll never touched a dot of anything stronger than wine, but it is my suggestion that his works are political and social satire wrapped up in a blameless guise of innocent fantasy and fancy. The caucus race for example seems pretty straightforward in it's criticism of meandering politics. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4634 Joined: 13 Feb 2008 | I don't think it actually contains any drug references. The Hookah (Caterpillar) is actually generally used for smoking tobacco. Take any children's story like Watership Down (Talking Rabbits), James and the Giant Peach (Talking Insects), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(?????), Where the Wild Things Are, The Gruffalo, Chorlton and the Wheelies; and they're all a little surreal. I think this is similar to "The Magic Roundabout", where even though drug references can be made, the real story is that Serge Danot wrote it quite sensibly, but the English simply couldn't get all the French references.(And there's proof to that Jeffers :) ) Seriously, look at ANY Children's TV show from the 70's/80's and they're all like that. Jamie and the Magic Torch, Mr. Benn, Trapdoor??? Jabberwock might be an acid trip, but Alice really isn't. |

I think you missed what I meant when I say acid trip. I wasn't talking about how this originated I was talking about how Alice could dream that. Also I found this video that uses sounds and small clips from the movie to make a song. It's kinda messes with your head because Alice keeps singing "there is hell, follow it, to the devil" |

Muckraker Posts: 296 Joined: 17 Oct 2007 | Not actually contributing to this. . . idk discussion?: Alice in Wonderland is the best Disney animation, period. (Not the best MOVIE, but animation.) It's bananas x2. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3675 Joined: 29 Nov 2007 | The gentleman who wrote Alice in Wonderland was a reverend and a teacher, as well an amatuer photographer. The only harmful chemicals he was subjected to were that of of camerea's flash, which was standard in the day, and the pain killers of the day. Which by todays standards were yes, drugs, but back then that's how things worked. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 469 Joined: 14 May 2008 | Some of the absolute best works in history have been created on drugs. Edgar Allen Poe was a frequent Opium user. So even if Carrol had done drugs, I really wouldn't have judged him as anything else but a literary genius. Alice in Wonderland is still my favorite piece of literature. I hated the Disney version at first, but laid back and accepted it. The absence of the chess references irked me- the Red and White Queens were just not there at all, and the White Queen was such a FANTASTIC character. I directed the show my Senior year of high school, and the actress who played the White Queen just did so well it almost brought tears to my eyes. I love that character. Sorry I've been so quiet guys. As much as I love talking to the lot of you, I've been studying more than I've ever studied before. When I returned to University, I found out that there was a much greater gap in the curricula of my two Japanese classes than I'd originally thought, and now I'm three chapters behind. Once I get caught up, I'll be one more. Promise. |

Don't forget the author of Sherlock Holmes. He was a heroin addict. |

The Disney version is only Alice in Wonderland, right? The chess bits are in Through the Looking Glass, which is technically a seperate story. They cut out some of the crazier stuff in the Disney version, but I still think it's good. Even though Alice doesn't appear to be blonde in the illustrations from the original book.
No he wasn't. Where are you getting the idea that all authors around the 1900s were drug addicts? It's much more a romanticism thing, which is much earlier. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 388 Joined: 27 Mar 2008 | Well definitly not an acid trip. I know Carol was drinking a lot of Absynth at the time though. But Alice in Wonderland is my second favourite book (Alice through the looking glass being my favourite). The deliberatness of everything that and the calculated nonsense makes it impossible to be an acid trip. It is the imaginary fanciful work of a child loving genius. Who is pumped for Phanstasmagoria, a movie about the life of Lewis Carol directed and acted by Marilyn Manson? |

Ah I think I'm one of few people to get the Easter egg in oblivion about that (Jabberwocky). If you can enjoy basic literature or a good bit of crazy then it makes a fun kind of insanity, I don't like it (much) but I can appreciate it. I have never read the text of it though which is ironic because that's the only reason I like the movie. How you got to drugs is odd though. |

Quite a lot of what we "know" about Lewis Carroll is incorrect due to the attempts to whitewash his character by his first biographer (one of his nephews, I believe) and to make him look "innocent" and "pure". It was expanded to the point where later authors have traditionally taken the view that he was a pedophile in thier biographies, which consist of "research" that has pretty much been nothing more than reading the first biography. It wasn't until the family released his actual journals that any real information about Carroll's relationships with women was known. Try going to "The Carroll Myth" website for some actual information on him. BTW, his real name was Charles Dodgson, which if you want to look up any of his potographic work (which also in retrospect makes him look like a pedophile to us but which was perfectly acceptable and entirely non-sexual in nature in the era,) will help you find what you're looking for. |

You really shouldn't post superfluous polls, I heard the mods are a bunch of overweight internet nerds with a chip on their shoulder. Edit: Also, Lewis Carroll may have used the painkiller Laudanum from time to time to cure headaches, but there seems to be no evidence that he ever used/abused drugs. Chalk his works up to good ol' creativity, and a fascination with children's stories. |

Greeeeeat. Another trash movie by the worlds least creative rock. Prepare for entire innaccuracies and a movie based solely on shock value.

I know it's a classic, but really when I watch it I think HOW ON EARTH COULD SHE DREAM THAT!?!? The whole show is just one big acid trip, I mean really if anyone has a weirder dream than the entirety of this(cannot have been induced from meds, beer, etc) then I will be surprised.
I'll admit I had a weird dream when i was young where I had to go to the bathroom like heck, and these giant crabs chased me around chopping all the toilets up(weird it may be but it's got nothing on Alice).
I would also like to note that there were a total(according to Wikipedia) of 13 writers for this! I think that they made this by all getting high writing what they saw, and then stringing it into a movie.
If anyone disagrees then I welcome your complaint, and you may even change my mind about this, but it's going to be one hell of a challenge! =-D
P.S. I don't think the poll options are needless I'm just giving more freedom in expressing their thoughts on this topic.
