Indeed they do, but people get sick of me going on about the film industry raping everything they can get their hands on so I thought I'd aim the convo at TV instead. |

Ugh, I don't know anyone who would argue that there's anything good about Americanized Asian horror. |

Frankenstein isn't Black? How can Cat become Cat if the Cat's not Black?!? Actually it made me laugh, but it made me laugh in the same way I laugh after crashing my bike at speed. It's the laughter brought on by excruciating pain! |

I'm sorry you had to be witness to that dude, truly I am. *arranges for everyone on the thread to hug fix-the-spade* - "It's okay, everything will be alright. They're making the next movie and another series so that will replace the memories of the crap attempt". Oh, and how bad is that theme music? |
Paperboy Posts: 14 Joined: 18 Sep 2008 | Yeah it irritates me too. Mostly because it's just completely pointless and it just seems like the american tv companies are trying to cash in on our popular shows and trying to make them "better" lol. I don't see why they can't just stick to making their own shows, they already have enough good shows so why do they have to steal ours? We speak the same language ffs. But the thing that upsets me the most is to see my favorate shows butchered. Do americans really find it amusing to watch? I know we have different humour... but it kind of defeats the purpose of the show if you're going to change it. |

As far as I'm concerned, random chords on a synthesiser isn't music, it's just theme noise. What I really liked was the flow of the dialogue, those actors take the 'awkward pause' technique beyond a mere foul up to a full blown art form... |

It's just painful on every level. I felt like I should have been paid to watch it. hehe. |

Got any clip linkage for me pleeeeeeease? :D |

Love too, but it was only shown on Star TV, I think, and only in Arabic. |

actually it's about not aboot, please don't be ignorant towards canada while complaining about how the americans are ruining british tv shows as for preempting a show, it's cause other things are on at the time. i do believe the bbc does that as well, for a singing competition no less |

That's a shame. My gland for self-punishment and my organ of laughing at (not with, mind you) failed attempts towards humour need some exercise. |

Okay guilty, but it was a joke dude, relax. Take a shot at me for drinking tea or speaking the Queen's English or something. I can take it :D
TBH I don't watch any British prime time TV. As far as I know the singing (and dancing etc.) competitions are pretty much all the BBC do apart from Dr. Who and the odd medical/period drama. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 454 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | I don't get it. You're addicted to our shows, yet you complain about it when they're not there every week... It doesn't exactly win me over, but it's just television. Just wait a week. Now, if anyone can complain about anybody else's TV shows... Why the hell did Black Books only have 18 episodes over four years? I daren't imagine what the English version of Married... with Children would be like. *shudder* |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 813 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 |
Black Books was 3 years actually dude, 18 episodes with 1 short special "Bernard's Letter". This is very typical of British TV, look all the way back to Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, Young Ones, very short seasons even back in the day. I think we try and keep a season short and sweet. Whilst the American tradition is to make it last as long as possible, usually between 20 and 25 episodes; X-Files, Scrubs, My Name Is Earl and so on. I feel that neither case is right. Sometimes a great show should go on for longer (Black Books) and it doesn't, then another show goes on a little too long. (avoids flame baiting by not saying something negative like Desperate Housewives or Lost!) English Married With Children? Erm (checks the net) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_point_4_children - That's an older one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Family - More recent one Enjoy :P EDIT: FIXED MY SHODDY ATTEMPT AT SIMPLE MATHS |

*Looks down at his three Black Books DVDs* *Looks back up* Yeah... 18 episodes... six per series. I think I should know, eh?
2.4 Children? Really? REALLY? Man, the English "Al" was a nerd... I was expecting something more like Mrs. Bucket's sister, Rose, & her husband from Keeping Up Appearances... or a family of chavs or something... |

Sorry yeah, 3x6 is 18, I just subtracted 6 from your 4 season 18 total. We both F'd up a little there.
Well, I don't know if they direct US to UK versions, but they're the shows that I remember with the same sort of format. |

...what? They... why? Why did.... YOU CAN'T HAVE FAWLTY TOWERS WITHOUT JOHN CLEESE! IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY! ...sigh. I can't be the only American who loves properly-done dry English wit. "Fatty Owls". Hee hee hee. |
Beat Writer Posts: 183 Joined: 1 Nov 2007 | FOX canned the Spaced remake? Wow... For once I am glad for FOX's rep of killing shows. And on the top of American media sucking the awesome out of UK shows: LIFE ON MARS. LIFE. ON. MARS. WHAT THE HELL. :weeps, misses the real Sam Tyler and Gene Genie: |
Muckraker Posts: 300 Joined: 9 Mar 2008 | To be perfectly honest, I don't believe all these BBC shows are the pristine sacred cows you seem to think they are. Yes, Fawlty Towers is funny. The Office is funny. But this isn't Hamlet here. Another thing to keep in mind is that while people all over the world may be used to accepting American exports for what they are, we in the US are decided NOT used to accepting anything put out by other people. Most of what we find funny in imports may not be what is intended as funny, but is simply what is most British or Canadian about it. We're not laughing because we get it - we're laughing because you people use funny words, with a goofy accent. If you want American viewers to take something seriously content-wise, you have to Americanize it or it will remain forever a foreign oddity. Don't forget how self-absorbed and culturally isolationist we really are, even in a global market. Of course, that doesn't explain why our stuff is so internationally popular. Gone With the Wind is hugely popular in Japan and Turkey. Maybe being a 'Yank', as it were, I just don't get it. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 545 Joined: 19 Jun 2008 | I'm sure someone else has brought it up, but you yanks have just completely buttfucked Kath & Kim. Your version is so retarded it should be given to science for study. |
Muckraker Posts: 300 Joined: 9 Mar 2008 | Yes. Because the original was a holy grail of television comedy. I think you people need to take a moment and reconsider just what you're defending here. |
Beat Writer Posts: 145 Joined: 1 Oct 2008 | wait red dwarf remake?! That will ruin the greatness of the show (greatness = cheese/brit+humor) |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 813 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 | Haven't seen Kath and Kim I'm afraid, so I can't pass comment on that I'm afraid. I found out they were going to do an American Black Adder series called 1775. It had a pilot filmed and aired once in '92 but no one picked it up. It was set in colonial Philadelphia and as usual, had NONE of the original cast. http://www.thelogbook.com/logbook/blackadder/1775-us-series-pilot/ Yay for the flop! :D |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 545 Joined: 19 Jun 2008 | Zachatree: There was two, perhaps three episodes made of the american adaption of Red Dwarf. It's so abysmally bad, it's not worth even downloading for a looksee. Just pretend you never heard about it, and things will be well. |

Read some older posts dude, I already put the links on there for anyone daring enough to check out the two pilots :P |

Yeah, I know, but I was hoping to spare some people the horror. Once you've seen it, there's no amount of booze that can erase it. |

And what's that? No one here is saying all translations are abysmal and no one is saying all originals are fantastic. I just wanted a discussion about them and allow people to learn from and inform others about other shows we may not know about. |

THANK YOU! Finally, someone else that isn't lapping that shite up like some stupid kitten addicted to the shit spewing machine that is Channel 4. Thank You. Just because you've added zombies to something crap, it doesn't make it good. TBH, at least 50% of zombie flicks are crap. EDIT: AND, taking the piss out of something crap doesn't instantly make the piss-taker or the piss-takee good either. *cough* Peter Kay's Pointless Reality Spoof With 40 More Words In The Title *cough* |

I wonder if Marcus Bently is adding his Geordie-ish vocals to the shit mix? I wonder if Davina "Please don't say fuck or bugger" McCall will be a zombie? Seriously Channel 4 need to get a grip and show summat decent and most importantly, ORIGINAL! Although I do have to say I did kinda enjoy Britain's Got the Pop Factor and Possibly a New Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly On Ice, the other night. It was a bit long though. It had Rick Astley in it. That made everything worthwhile. |
