Why is it called "5 best games ever" when it should chave been titled "my top 5 favourite games" I actually don't find any of those games appealing. |

Bollocks it is. I've seen this type of rant before, you'll be back, eager to see what the hornets will do after you've disturbed the nest. |

Indeed. |

Is there a way you could have handled that without making an asshole of yourself? This is trolling, pure and simple, and you know it. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 64 Joined: 14 Apr 2008 | Well, thank God you're reviewing me. Yes, me. It would have been patronizing if you just lumped everyone who ever visited The Escapist into one category and made sweeping judgments about us without ever meeting any of us or finding out how we feel about things. So, let me return your courtesy and present my credentials. Having been a gamer since shortly after Pong came out, I may not be representative of the gaming community as a whole, but I'm probably as close as you're going to get to a gamer archetype. I was around when Pac-Man and Space Invaders first hit it big. I sat with a little manual and programmed games into my Commodore, and was geeked by Ultima. I played through the arcade era, and remember the first time Mario ever graced a screen. I remember when Street Fighter II ruled and Mortal Kombat didn't, and I remember when Mortal Kombat didn't suck. I went from Atari to Nintendo, through the fall of Sega, the rise of Sony, and through the evolution of games from cartridge to CD-Rom to DVD to online co-ops. I still have all my games from Assassin's Creed to Zaxxon, and I still play video games today because I genuinely enjoy them. I probably will for the rest of my life, or at least until my thumbs freeze from arthritis and I have to start living vicariously through the grandkids. Those are my gaming credentials. If I'm the worst the gaming community has to offer, I'll happily take it and go right on playing. The only "credential" that really matters is the one that makes us all gamers: The enjoyment of gaming. That said, I don't care for your list of the top five. I've played all of them, and while some of them were enjoyable games, they certainly don't represent the top five games of all time... even if there was such a thing (and there isn't). So, since you were nice enough to throw a fit about it and throw out the D word: Fanboy. If you weren't one, you wouldn't bear such animosity toward your fellow gamers yourself. Your rant betrays your true nature on this one. Nothing says "fanboy" like loosing a hate-filled diatribe on everyone around you and then storming off to sulk. You may not be bound to one console, but you choose the same types of games consistently. Four out of the five games on your list are graphically similar (kind of cutsey-utsey big head/ dungeon-crawleresque graphics) and the other one, Halo 2... well, saying you like Halo 2 is about like saying you like breathing. It's a very popular choice. Plus, when you get right to it, an anonymous guy in a suit of armor fighting evil aliens? It isn't just Half-Life revisited... it's Metroid. So boiling it down, you've got SSBB, three games that are Nintendo-era FF clones, and a Metroid clone. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that makes you a bit of a Nintendo fanboy, especially in light of the fact you not only put SSBB in your top five, but take time out of your list of general complaints about the gaming community as a whole to specifically throw a fit about SSBB. That tells me even more about the root of your hostility. You're pissed because other people don't like SSBB as much as you do. Once again: Fanboy. Maybe it's just my extreme old age (I'm over thirty... aahhhh!), but it seems to me there's more than enough room in the market for everyone to find their niche, and fanboys aren't always a bad thing. It's the die-hard fanboys who are going to keep the gaming companies going when they move to a new console and everyone else is afraid to dip their toe into the virtual pond and test the waters. If it wasn't for Mario and Zelda fanboys, Nintendo would have died a gruesome death before it got out of eight-bit. If it wasn't for Sonic fanboys, Sega would have... okay, Sega's stupid. I doubt the Playstation would have really survived if it hadn't been for Final Fantasy fanboys flocking to the console after VII hit. Sorry, but everyone I know who rushed out and bought a PS1 did it because they wanted to play that game. So, they may be an irascible part of the community, but they're a useful part nonetheless. Anyway, I'm sorry you're so laid back about things you feel the need to go sulk in a corner, but hey, it gives everyone else here a bit more space and you more time to play your video games. ADDENDUM: Yes, I know. "The enjoyment of gaming". Next I'll sing "Wind Beneath My Wings" and start finding Oprah Winfrey inspiring. Then my life will officially be over. Oh, the humanity! |
Red Guard Posts: 1524 Joined: 16 Dec 2007 | The Escapist represents a lot of people. Hardly any of who take everything that is said in the ZP reviews as anything but entertainment. Sure, there are some people who agree and hoot and holler when they see a popular game's flaws pointed out. They are part of this community too, but they do no represent everyone. What you need to do is actually spend some time here before "reviewing" the community. I think you'll find a lot of people don't simply bow down to Yahtzee's judgments anymore than I bow down to every comedian on the telly who tells me what the state of my country is. |

(ps your taste in games is alittle on the crappy side) 1) ff7 because it changed gaming altogether, it raised the bar on graphics and storyline to the extent that people STILL play it and they bring back the characters every chance they get. |

I think your making a mistake by Saying Halo 2 was good simply because Halo 3 didn't live up to your expectations. While were on the subject I think there's nothing wrong in defending a game or a series you like online, it's the way you do it. I think Halo 3 have been submitted to a lot of unjust criticism on the internet, and defending it seemed to be a futile endeavor, since everybody had their minds set on "flame the over-hyped". I agree with the whole over-hyped argument to some extend. Halo 3 was made out to be one of the greatest FPS's, if not one of the greatest games, ever, which is utter bullshit because it's stupid to talk in superlatives when it comes to personal taste. I really enjoyed the single-player campaign. I played it with a mate in some of the most intense game-sessions i've had since I was a little kid and played Heroes 2 all day with my friends. The game lived up to my expectations. The environments looked good, the leveldesign had improved and it was fun to play. I never got into the multiplayer, but that didn't matter to me that much. What Halo achieved like no other series i've played has, is to tell a story spanning over three games that i actually cared about. Halo 3 ends the series in a beautiful way, with a feeling of a connected story-line and an interesting universe. I think the game was unjustly bashed by a lot of people on the internet, now does it make me a fanboy that i feel like defending it on a forum? I don't think so.. complaining about a game being exceptionally harshly attacked because of things you don't agree with as valid, is in my eyes perfectly legit. I don't claim that Halo is the greatest game ever, but I think it was judged unfairly. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 9 Joined: 8 May 2008 | i get your point, i'm just saying that halo 2 made a large splash because of the gameplay and halo 3 though it was good, only made as big a splash (in my opinion) because of the hype it had built and its fanbase from halo 2 |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2384 Joined: 18 Dec 2007 | It has been pointed out by other users that this is a Fanboy post so I will not bother repeating them. But he does make a good point. He is correct in saying that people do argue about their favourite game(s). While I see nothing wrong with arguing why you perfer a game to another some of the shit that gets thrown around is off the charts (captain). The Console tard epidemic is one that springs to mind, so does though Halo 3 threads. The fact that people claimed you have downsyndrome (or something similar) because you own a 360 still shocks me to this day. And they don't even use 'Retard' in correct context. If I said that by you owning a Wii your graphic qualities are retarded due to the Wii's Graphic card being less powerful then the other 2 consoles I would be correct to an extent. This is not a bad thing as such and I'm sure someone can list good things about the Wii that negate this. You could also say that the Technical difficulties with the 360 retard it, or that the price tag of the PS3 retards it's sales. But instead you say "The wii is retarded". This then usually changes to "Wii owners are retarded". This will then change to "durrr", the savage cycle of console insults is now complete, well done, you have now become what you where arguing about. I hope your happy. While the amount of bitching and arguing about other people's favourite gamming company is smaller here than many other websites it still exists, and is quite ugly to look at. I would also like to point out that if you joined to "Vote Valve" then you quite clearly are a fanboy and are infact part of the problem you described and not part of it's solution. |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 818 Joined: 29 Mar 2008 | ok, lesson one: Credentials qualify you to judge something. Nothing you've listed in your list of top five games are credentials. they are games. good games, but not, you know, a degree or anything, you know something that counts as a credential now that thats out of the way I personally target my rage towards the ISSUE, not the player, and not the game itself. I also know that while it may not be all people on this forum who do that, i am certainly not alone. I would argue that there are more people like me in this forum than the fanboy hating dinguses you are apparently "leaving" the forum for. Now before you start on how i'm attacking you for being a fanboy, lets get one thing straight. You are attacking a large group of people, a community I am a part of and feel obligated to defend. even if you were not a fanboy (which you obviously are) i would still jump down your throat like i'm about to. because before you're a fanboy, you are a human being. well, almost. you know, this is such a massive cry for attention you might as well dye your hair black, put it infront of your eyes and listen to My Chemical Romance. In today's fast food, instant gratification society, people instantly expect things they haven't earned, and don't deserve. You want recognition because you feel you are better than us. You have a postcount of 31, so you aren't very active, you joined at the end of march, so you've not been with us long, and you, quite obviously, dont understand that there is a dynamic that you can fit into if you stop fighting it, observe the other posters, and act like a sensible, rational person. finally, i dont think its enough for you to get off this forum. I want you off the internet. I want you off the planet. I want you to understand that we humans are not the enemy and if you want to be alone then fine, be alone. but dont cry when no one cares if you live or die friendly yours, |

The following will be very negative and will include generalizations. If you are not a part of the following complaints, feel free to point that out, but please do not make a big deal about it.
You people represent the worst of the gaming community, if you ask me (which you did as soon as you clicked on this thread). I have never seen such a collection of hate and dung-flinging in all my years of talking about gaming. The anger some gamers have toward others is shocking. I suppose there are several causes for this. The March Mayhem tournament certainly caused some to be against each other, and the debates following Yahtzee's reviews don't help either.
Before I go any further, I would like to point out my credentials. First look at my name and then look at my list of the 5 best games ever:
1) Final Fantasy 3
2) SSBB
3) Halo 2
4) Final Fantasy Tactics
5) Warcraft 3
Call me a fanboy. I dare you.
Clearly, it is possible for someone to like both Halo and Half-Life, both SSBB and something not made by Nintendo. This forum needs to learn that. And as much as I am generalizing here, you guys are much worse. How many of you decided Yahtzee described the Nintendo fanboys perfectly? How many of you decided Halo has ruined the FPS because Half-Life has med kits? Well you're all wrong, and here's why:
1) Diverse games is a good thing, believe it or not. It increases the chances you'll find something you'll like.
2) Gamer unity is rare, but it leads to more useful reviews and happiness.
3) Anti-fanboys are at least 10 times as common as actual fanboys. That means that the amount of hate being used is not necessary. A little will do fine.
4) For the love of God, SSBB is not a button-masher! Anyone who has really tried the game or played with real players knows that. The fact that so many people think otherwise shows how quickly you all assume the worst in something you are biased against.
5) Portal is really fun. This doesn't actually belong in this list, but I'm just throwing that out there.
Anyway, I've probably posted enough already to get myself burned, shot, and crucified. This feels a little like stepping on a crocodile's tail to see how it will react. But what if I threw a rock at the old croc and ran like hell? That's right. I will not be back. This is my last visit to the forum. Why? Because I want you to think about what I said, not about me or my review. You guys need to lighten up about games you do not like, and even more so about companies, and even more more so about the fans of those companies. Well, this had probably been the biggest waste of 5 minutes ever. I doubt a single one of you will change in any way, because tat is how people are when they choose division over unity. Good luck, and have fun tearing this to shreds.
