It might be nice to have a contained poll with only existing Escapist members included, but you wouldn't have been included if my memory serves me. Didn't you join to participate in this? |

The whole tourney just seems skewed towards the smaller studios on the list who can post news stories and send in the hoards Something Awful style. |

Aside from the few hundred who are actually participating, most wont ever even know about this little game. |

It is? I had gotten this weird idea that there would be judgement involved blind slavish worship of this or that studio. I have only voted in a couple, but in each case I had to think about the various up/downs of the studios in question. I wouldn't have gotten a chance to vote if the signups had been locked, but that's ok if it prevents voting-spam. |

Yes I did, but what I didn't do is create 7 other accounts to vote for one developer. |

PROBATION Posts: 93 Joined: 21 Dec 2007 | Seriously, after looking at the results of the Epic vs Harmonix and Turbine vs Bioware, I also urge the Escapist staff to stop these 'one post wonder' voters (and the multiple account voters). At this rate the final round is going to Harmonix vs Turbine. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT EITHER OF THESE DEVELOPERS ARE WORTHY OF BEING CALLED 'the greatest developer ever'. Think about it. Turbine has made 2 MMOs. Lets be honest with ourselves kids, the MMO genre is hardly the bastion of inovation (or even decent gameplay without having to invest 20 hours a week - its like having a 2nd job ffs). Harmonix has made an arcade port (and a stream of sequels) for several consoles. An addictive arcade port at that, but honestly is Guitar Hero the BEST GAMER EVER? NO IT ISN'T FFS. Then again: if you open up matters of taste to a public vote you nearly always end up with a retarded conclusion (see PopIdol or its American cousin...), but I had hoped that the Escapist would be the exception to the rule. User was put on probation for: Zero Punctuation: Webcomics. (7 days) |

What makes a great developer is the fans that follow them. Plus, this shouldn't be seen as the 'greatest developer ever' tournament. Where did you read that? If this is anything like the men's basketball tournament (not that you would actually watch sports), they will have another one next year and all the seeds will be changed. So, for this year someone will be the winner!...and it will change again next year. I would say more, but do I really need to? It's fun to see the voting (and the ridiculous fanboys going at it) and I greatly enjoyed this addition to the Escapist. I will look forward to it again next year (if they do it again next year that is). |

Turbine has made 4 MMO's and has been around for over 10 years. Their first game was extremely innovative. Let me guess you only know DDO and LOTRO? They made AC which is still kicking after 9 years, and they made AC2 which is dead because it was built around what microsoft wanted not what turbine wanted. They turned it around after they bought the Franchise back from MS. |

Yes this is exactly why I signed up. I was sad that I missed the earlier rounds because my favorite developer actually has already been knocked out. So yeah I really have no loyalties towards a particular dev (even though I want Valve to win it all). But the reason I actually noticed this contest was because of ZP and his reviews, thats when I noticed the little banner in the bottom right and decided that it was time to sign up. |

So it's four MMO's that not even some MMO fans remember vs Games that have their own Gospel in RPG Bible (Thou shall not roll for initiative).Should Blizzard have a better reason to be up? No offence but the results are clearly a set-up and don't tell me that a company I've never before heard off, is ahead of Ubi,Rockstar,Blizzard and Bioware. |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 705 Joined: 18 Sep 2007 | Is anybody here labouring under the misapprehension that the results are meaningful in any way? This is a lark, not a measure of any studio's "worthiness" in any real-world sense. As a publicity tool for the Escapist, I think cutting off new members/subscribers/viewers from voting is counterproductive. As an exercise in fun, cutting off new members also undermines the point of March Madness. This isn't some scientific study of the merits of various studios. This enduro-poll isn't composed to measure anything like that with any sort of reliability or controls, and the sample size is too small to be meaningful anyway. Sit back, relax, and watch the fun... it's not worth blowing an artery over the results. -- Steve |

Amen to that. I find it hillarious that everyone is getting their panties in a knot about this whole "tournament". Who cares if Turbine is beating other fan-favourite studios? What does it matter if Harmonix rides its hit games to the top? This isn't Mortal Kombat, people. The fate of the universe isn't on the line as mortals fight to the death against beings from another world. This is supposed to be for fun. Part of the fun of the March Madness tournament in basketball is watching top seeded teams get eliminated by 16th seeded underdogs. I'm glad that it's not gonna end up being Nintendo vs. Valve and Blizzard vs. Epic (or something similar to that). It makes the voting more interesting when smaller studios, who may not have made as much money in the market but have produced some stunning games, topple industry giants. It can also introduce some gamers to studios and games that you've never heard of. So please, everyone take a chill pill and breathe for a moment. It isn't the end of the world if your studio of choice is defeated. There's always next season. |

Four MMO's 2 of which lots of people know and are actively advertised, one that is a niche game but it's still a great game when given a try and one that shut down but there's people campaigning to get at least one server brought back up even without new content being produce. I don't see how clearly it's a set-up. Sure some people may have multiple accounts for voting, but most people don't and a couple hundred votes is hardly a staggering number. Now if it had been 1000 to 100 or something then there'd be some suspicion, but come on. Turbine beat Bioware by a couple dozen votes and I can guarantee that if even one person had multiple accounts for voting for turbine at least one did for bioware as well. But as has been pointed out, it doesn't really matter because in the end the real winner is Escapist because a certain % of the new members will hang around and become regulars on the site and every single person on the site produces ad income. |
Since its to late for this round, I request you BLOCK ALL SIGN-UPS the day of the semi-finals and finals. Or just limit the votes to the IP of the computer.
This multiple account thing has got out of hand. (See Double Fine, Epic, Harmonix, etc.) I think we all would be really appreciative if you took some measure against this.
