Unlocking characters is meant to be easy. If you play the single player (on co-op for more fun) you can get through the whole think in eight hours, tops. That really isn't asking that much. You could probably do it much faster if you dropped the difficulty

you sir have said why I won't buy the game. 8 hours or less? is that all i get for my hard earned cash

The single player 'storyline' takes that long. If you're buying Brawl, or Smash Bros at all, for the story, you are seriously doing it wrong in the first place unless you also happen to enjoy playing against the CPUs all the time. It's primarily a multiplayer game, so if you don't have friends who also like/play the game, you'll be stuck alone unless you use online play.

Agreed with Garfgarog.

I played Smash Melee until 2005. That game came out in 2001.

3 years of multiplayer. This game will last about the same time.

The multiplayer value and length in this game is worth 100 bucks itself.

That said, I think it says a lot about this franchise. There have been 3 in 10 years - that's it. Meanwhile we've seen 5 DOA's among many other boring fighting games.

If Bill Murray was an actual unlockable character, I'd buy a Wii and a copy.

Awesome review, funny cos it's true :)
I think smash bros brawl was the only game making me want a wii... after watching this, I've realised how little smash bros games really offer...

I beat Subspace Emissary in a tiny bit over 7 hours... And that was without a walkthrough, seeing as I got it on the first day :3

Interesting.

I kinda figured this might not be Yahtzees kind of game, so fair enough on the complaining really. Though it's fair enough to say the Smash series may be a 'button masher', in that you could still play the game through random mashing, its not a button masher in the traditional sense of classic fighting games. You won't mash a random string of buttons and pull off some uber move that you will never know how to do again, or if you look it up, be able to pull off again.

These games are much simpler than that. It's arguable again of course as to that being a plus or minus point though. Its a plus you can learn all the moves without an encylopedic brain and epic button pressing reactions, but its a minus that it makes button mashing possibly even more viable.

"eat shit waffles?" that Yahtzee's a beautifully angry poet.

oh, I wonder how long it'll be until the world realises that 'that other over-hyped fighting game' Street Fighter 4 isn't as good as it should be by now, link contains sincerely bewildered editorial.

Well, judging from the review, it looks like he played it with the Wiimote... which in itself is a retarded mode to play on... Definitely worth hooking up the GC controller for.

Kinokiro:

ultimakewl:

Marth and Roy are brothers
they are from the game Fire Emblem for the original NES (which WAS released in the US)
I believe Marth was the main character, but it might have been Roy
after the release of SSBM for the GameCube,
Nintendo put out a GameBoy Advanced Fire Emblem game (also released in the US)

Actually... the first Fire Emblem wasn't released in the US. It was released as Roy's version, which I believe was FE2... Marth is Roy's father(?), They re-released the original FE on GBA, which was Roy, and the sequel which was Roy's son, or grandson I think...

Anyway, the whole premise of Fire Emblem is about a kingdom usually being taken over, and the last surviving prince(ss) stands alone to fight the enemy kingdom, recruiting opponents along the way, which is pretty much what the idea behind SSB is. Like in the title song it says something like "We were once enemies, now we fight side by side"

Actually, Eliwood is Roy's father. They show that in the first american-released Fire Emblem on the GBA. I don't think Marth has any relation to Roy whatsoever.

The great thing about Zero Punctuation is that I always enjoy watching the latest weekly installment, even if I disagree with Yahtzee's opinion. This is one such review. I bought a Wii solely for Brawl, and I haven't regretted my purchase in the slightest. However, this ZP review does a great job pointing out some of the game's shortcomings.

Yes, I too agree that the criteria to unlock Sonic and Snake was too steep, especially considering the hype they were given. And yes, the Subspace Emissary is too repetitive, especially right before the end boss. For the record though, there is a strategy to the fighting, particularly if you disable items. It's just not apparent right away (you can still get a fair ways button-mashing, though). And no, I don't have a pair of cat ears. I do have T-shirts, but they're mostly Valve-oriented.
<_<
>_>
Oh yeah, and I have a complaint about the game Yahtzee didn't cover: Smash Balls. I understand that fights with randomly appearing items means a fair amount of luck is involved, but the Smash Balls are just ridiculous. If I'm the one unleashing a Final Smash on an opponent, I feel like a cheap bastard. If I'm on the recieving end (particularly if I have low damage), I feel like my opponent's a cheap bastard. If they wanted one-hit KO's, they should have implemented a penalty system to balance it out, such as taking extra damage from attacks for a short time afterwards. Thank goodness Smash Balls can be disabled in the item selection.

Doing it on Intense is much more challenging, there are like twenty other modes to play, and the game is based on multiplayer anyway. So no.

The real question here is:

How many folks actually comprehend the significance of Bill Murray in that joke?

A question whose answer is surely going to make you feel more old than realizing you're one of the few that started with Final Fantasy 1 and not 7.

I think this forum is going to get really nasty before it is all over. Only an hour it's been up and the sheer level of ownage going on is pretty incredible. Thanks @ Garfgarog for pointing out that the whole "overrated" argument is just circular logic. Why is it bad? Because it's overrated. Why is it overrated? Because it's bad.
I'm not a Nintendo fanboy (I've never even finished a Mario, Zelda, or Metroid game), but I was fighting mad after this review, mostly for the same reasons that Kermi was. I can only imagine how the big N faithful are going to react.

As per unlocking Snake: It's not really that hard at all, nor does it take hours. All you need to do is play 15 brawls on Shadow Moses Island. Easily done, set the stock to one, and walk off the stage 15 times... Then beat Snake when he challenges you.

My god, what he said about "THAT guy" is so true.

Yahtzee is truly gifted at putting into hilariously scathing words concepts that never found a suitable vehicle for escaping my own mind.

Personally, I use the Wii Remote and I fare very well against a lot of people I play against, including some 'tourneyfags' I know who all use the Gamecube controller. I've gotten so used to it by now, I can't even play with a GC controller anymore. I don't see anything inherently worse in using the remote.

Haha, I like you, you are funny.
Everything the comments above did, was to praise the review.
I didn't notice anyone behaving like an idiot before you showed up, with I found rather funny.

I can't say I was surprised by the review - Yahtzee hates Nintendo repetition and as for the actual game there isn't much to say about it other than you beat the tar out of each other.

I still love it though.

I just can't get used to the wiimote. Maybe the Chuckmote (always in the mood for random stick-waggling, Haha!), but the GC serves me well. Maybe I'm just old fashioned :) I'd use an N64 controller, if I could!

I'm sure most have comprehended it (groundhog day was a wonderful movie), but it still would be awesome using Bill Murray on brawl.

The absolute highlight of the review for me was the bitch-slap of Nintendo about Mother 3. Earthbound (Mother 2) was one of the greatest games of all time, and yet Nintendo seem determined to keep the series entirely in Japan. We don't want Doshin The Giant Nintendo, we want the Mother series you ****s.

I think it'll be about the same as Halo 3, except situation is reversed in that I'm arguing for the game this time against legions of the same kind of blind fools that all immediately bend over to let Yahtzee have his way with them unconditionally, or the types that try to pass off their personal tastes as a global standard.

That and it would seem that the user base for this board by and large is filled with self-important egotistical elitists, it leads to problems. Yahtzee's been forced into a 'hatred' skew because that's what everyone tells them they like, so he'll always try to point out the negative, and right off the bat you'll have 8:1 of the posts to follow agreeing unconditionally.

Tingler: I agree... it would have made the Mother reference way better if they had actually released the series here. Until Brawl, I had no idea what "New Pork City" or Lucas had to do with anything (other than they were from SOME Earthbound[Mother] game)

OR maybe some people have the maturity to keep their opinions to themselves. By reacting to defend brawl, you're naturally going to look like a fanboy. "Oh my, he didn't like my game, and they all agree with him! Don't worry mama, they're all stupid."

I while I'm not a fan of fighting games myself, I rather enjoyed Brawl. Maybe its from growing up with the old nintendo games or my addiction to unlockables but I liked the game as a whole. My main hate points towards the game though would come from the addition of stickers which are just like trophies from melee, and the boss battle game which is mindnumbing on intense and even on very hard.

All in all I thought it was a good game but, I'll keep my 360 thank you.

I don't think it's really fair to say you pretty much need to be a Nintendo fanboy to enjoy the game. Just look at the number of critics who love it. They can't all be fanboys.

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/wii/supersmashbrosbrawl?q=Super%20Smash%20Bros.%20Brawl

Also, much all of the characters and stages can be unlocked through battle count. Just keep playing multiplayer, like you wanted to do.

SSE is a huge letdown, though. The cutscenes are nice, but the gameplay is meh. Shoehorning the fighting game engine into a platformer/beat-em-up doesn't work.

Yahtzee! I know you're really cheezed at all of the generic fanboys out there, and I understand a lot of your complaints. I just don't think you need to be so hard on Brawl. The platforming elements don't suffer from all that much repetition, and playing co-op with a rotation of friends takes a lot of the tedium out of it. There are new and classic platformers that are far far far more samey. Also I thought the point of Brawl was to be a Beat-em-up hit each other with things till it hurts battle royale. I mean there are pretty much two buttons to hit, very few combinations, and a solid feel to the impacts. Fighters have done a lot worse with a lot more.
