I'm not defending Yahtzee. I'm laughing at you waggling around your little willie. I'll let you know when you say anything that deserve a response beyond pointing and laughing. |

How very eloquent. I'm sure Indigo_Dingo's mother loves him.... And i do have to agree with Yahtzee - always wanted to see a good mailbag rant from him, and finally got it. I'm going to be mightily entertained by the GTA4 review i think.... |

He does give legitimate reasons for not liking the game. It's just that some people disagree with his reasoning. That's their choice. I've found that reviewers tend to get bored with the mundane. Be it movies, TV, books, music, theatre, or video games; most reviewers are looking for that special something that will set it apart from all the other products out there. That's why it often seems that what we like, they do not. And, it's important to remember that reviewers are often forced to wade through the mediocre to get to something that stands out, so their patience wears thin. In his SSBB review, he made the following points. All of them are legitimate reasons to not like a game. 1. This game suffers from a problem common to all fighters. It can quickly descend into a fight that is no more challenging than hitting buttons over and over with no attempt at strategy. It's not a programming fault, but it's still there. All of those points are legitimate reasons for disliking the game, especially for a reviewer. For the general public, those may be points that they are willing to forgive or even the same ones that draw them to the game in the first place. Taking movies as an example, most people rave over movies that do the same thing over and over again. Why? Because it is the thing they like. Whether it's romance, drama, horror, or action, people are attracted to the same type of movie over and over. To a movie review who must sit through every movie that's coming out, it becomes a boring repetition of seeing the same movies over and over again with nothing to set them apart from the rest. That's why they often pick a movie that the general public really doesn't like or wouldn't normally see. Those are the movies that usually attempt something that is outside of the everyday experience. Ben has expressed the same feelings in a number of his reviews. That's why he gave Psychonauts such a decent review. It was something that most people wouldn't play, but its creators were trying something new and, in his opinion, not only deserved a mention for trying it, but they actually succeeded. And, there are times that he, just like the general public, is attracted to a game because of its sameness. He'd still like to see something new and exciting, but the thing that he sees in that game is the thing that attracts him to games in general. His Gears of War review falls into that category. It wasn't anything new, but it contained the things he liked. This game, to him, just came out as mediocre. It was nothing new and nothing stood out as something about which he should become excited. Neither he nor his friends enjoyed it and he doesn't recommend it. It seems that his acerbic wit, usually the draw to his reviews, and his attack on those people who descend into insane raving over a game are what turned many people off this time. Like any reader or viewer of reviews, our job is to determine whether we will try the game and then decide if we like it. If a person has the same taste in games as the reviewer and finds the same things distracting in a game, then his review would do well to warn them away. If they do like the things that he doesn't, then they should be able to laugh at his wit and enjoy the game. If not, then they can wait until the next review and then get back to enjoying his wit and opinions. |

Anonymous Source Posts: 7 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | I liked both the SSB review and this one. I like the new SSB allot and I would get a Wii for that game, if nothing else, but that is because I like 'party games' when I am hanging with my friends. Like Guitar Hero or Mario Party or Mario Kart. You know, the games you can pop in and just have fun without floating through cinematics and storyline. Thing is, that's all they are good for. Now, I have only played bits of Brawl at the local Gamestop while waiting to clock into work or when waiting for my taxi home so I do not know much of the storyline but, once again, it is a fun party game to me. That being said, I liked both the game and the review! If you start foaming at the mouth when someone says something bad about a like of yours then, for the love of gourd (yes, gourd), go chew on a power line. Maybe the electric impulses sent to your head when you get through the line will finally jump-start your brain. My biggest hate is when someone pretty much blurts 'OMG! U do not liek what I like! U have no taste! Start being more liek me or u suk!' I want to beat these people in the face with an electric drill untill the stupid dribbles out their ears. I can accept difference of opinions but the mindless blather that some people spew, all the while believing they are saying something valid (much like this post), makes my brain turn inside out and try to kill itself dead. Yeah, I like Brawl. No, I did not feel insulted when he gave it a bad review. Why? Because I know what a review is; An opinion. Even if you try to be subjective, you will fail. If you hate FPS games, you will probably find less good stuff to say about them. Gods know I hate RTS games and never have anything good to say about them. Personally, we should round up every frothing fanboy (console, genre, or WoW) and make them fight to the death, the winner(s) will be killed. It's a win-win. :) They shut up and I stop hearing 'OMG! This game suks! WoW is better!' and 'Why did you buy a 360? Anything is bettr!' (Oh, and my typos are pretty much poking fun at internet grammar..Except for 'cinematics'. I just can't remember how to spell that and I am too lazy to look it up for a forum post...a long forum post..) One more edit: One of the points raised was '5. Some of the characters aren't that well known outside of Japan. Since this is a world-wide release, it should feature the more mainstream characters so that people can relate to the game better.' And Yah asked who Marth is, yes? (Or was it Roy?). Thing is, they were in Melee and no one knew then. THEN Fire Emblem came out here in the states. They are more mainstream now..here, at least. Granted, we seem to translate every game that comes out, regardless of how long it's been. |

Still don't agree with the SSBB review, but frankly I refuse to even consider looking at the comments for it as I seem to somehow psychically know without looking that it's nothing more than a bunch of acid vomiting Nintendo fanboys contending with acid vomiting contrarianists and acid vomiting but-perhaps-better-typing Yahtzee fanboys that want to hate the game with little better reason than to get a step closer to a world where they can be showered with your milky love toothpaste late into the night. |

I really enjoy watching and listening to the no-holes-barred quick-narrative reviews of feisty 'zero punctuation', which I started using as entertainment since my brother, who is also called Ben, forced me to watch some of them on more than one occasion. A girl. |

It seemed to me he managed to sink to their level with this weeks video though |
Paperboy Posts: 22 Joined: 8 May 2008 | Am I the only one noticing that the only comments taken seriously in this are the ones that have either placed Yahtzee's balls in their mouths or at the very least declared them the saviours of all things good in the universe? Don't get me wrong I enjoy his reviews and I'm on the side of most people discussing here but surely negative feedback is just as valid as positive feedback. Unfortunately there are no examples to point to because there are none in the video and I can't be arsed to scroll through 25 pages worth of commentary to give evidence to one little point Lastly stop knocking other people for posting their opinions and calling their posts and the topic in general as worthless. If no one cared there wouldn't be a whole forum devoted to the sole purpose of having comments posted on them and people should be able to do that without other people making them feel like a complete retard for doing so (note I'm referring to the concept of posting comments in theory and not supporting any of the arguments in the video) |

I can't tell you how good this made me feel. An actually well-thought out response, filled with good points. Great job. Oh, and Indigo_Dingo: He doesn't like the game. Okay. Do YOU like the game? Yes? Good! You can be happy with it while Yahtzee has fun with Chains of Olympus. |

I liked Halo 3 but then, I never saw Halo 1 and all I saw of Halo 2 was multiplayer when my friends brought over their Xbox's and hooked them all up so I took Halo 3 as a game unto itself. I did not know much of the story (save for what the booklet told me) so it was like an origonal game for me, not a sequel times two. Nor did I pay attention to commercials when it came out because I never thought I'd buy a 360 at that time. But that is off topic. Another person said most posts here were flaming Yahtzee or kissing his balls. I noticed a few were not..I hope mine was not; who knows who has been licking those things before me. |
Paperboy Posts: 13 Joined: 6 May 2008 | I love Yahtzee's reviews and more often than not they seem to coincide my own views on gaming. There is only one review I disagreed with him and that was on Mass Effect. I absolutely love that game and in my ever so humble opinion it is the best thing to hit gaming since the original Fallout but I wouldn't dream of sending a reviewer hate mail. yahtzee has his views on games and I have mine and if we agree on a game, great. If not, so freaking what. Everyone has an opinion on something or other. Screaming at someone who doesn't agree with you is just a waste of time. |
Paperboy Posts: 16 Joined: 23 Jan 2008 | Wait a minute, When Yahtzee explains his motivation for this piece: "... so I thought: 'rather than dispense bile all the time, it would be nice to sample some for a change'..." (Croshaw, 20-24), it's his own SSBB review vomiting profusely all over him and his desk. So is Yatzhee sampling his own bile? Seems a bit odd to me, really. -DonPaul |

I think the "bile" he was referring to was responding to hate mail. |

Not sure if this was a stab at me or not, but just in case it is; I'd like to clarify that I'm not sticking up for Yahtzee, god knows he doesn't need any help, but rather telling all you precious video gaming zealots take a step back and realise that A: Loyalty to a major corporation (that you don't work for - and if you did I'd advise against it) is about as logical as a prostitute standing by her drug dealer pimp, and B: IT'S A FUCKING VIDEO GAME! |

Here's the problem with what you are saying... A) You are quoting a piece of crass commercialism that is a screed against crass commercialism and don't seem to see the irony of it. B) People don't stick to simply insulting what someone likes. These new kids decide that if someone likes a game that Overlord Yahtzee disapproves of, it is obviously indicative of a character flaw, so they insult accordingly. |

I'm surprised at how many 1's there are considering this is a response to his SSBB thread. You would think all the people who hated SSBB fanboys would have already responded in there and most posts would be at least 2's. |

MGS will suffer that fate as well... you can quote me on that. (Also like to point out that I, personally, never thought Halo 3was overrated, I'm still playing to to this day. Although, I agree with Yahtzee on some points) |
