Put him at my place. I'll strap him to a chair, put in Mass Effect, and tell him the only time he gets fed is on the completion of a main quest. Then when he's done, we can move on to some other story-heavy game. He'd either have an epiphany, or starve to death. Either way, I win >:) Okay maybe that's a little sadistic... |

Could someone remind me of when game companies started enslaving families again? |

Make that four. I'll stick him in front of Guitar Hero 3, set up TFATF on Expert, hand him a normal controller, and say that I'll let him go when he FC's it.
We tried. Some guys sent flowers and a huge handwritten letter in an attempt to make peace with the guy. He called them terrorists, destroyed the letter, then sent the flowers to Take 2 Interactive with a note reading "In memory of all the people who lie in the ground because of your games." A rep for the company says they never got the flowers but still...I refuse to take seriously a man who pulls shit like that. I really do. We extend a hand of truth, he spat in our collective faces. |

They started in 2002, according to the Bible of Jack Thompson. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2775 Joined: 20 Dec 2007 | What a misleading award - it's not like everyone who speaks out against something wins a "Freedom" award. Maybe they should have given him a "Determination" award. Makes more sense than "Freedom". |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 852 Joined: 26 Mar 2008 | Evidently this is a new definition of "Freedom" that I'm not familiar with. Ironic seeing so he's removing people's freedom to judge something on its own merit and decide for themselves. |

Make him play DWDTG on his feet on another controller at the same time as well :D |

Muckraker Posts: 227 Joined: 29 Apr 2008 | censorship IS NOT the job of the media and it never has been and never should be, IT IS however the job of the parent/caretaker. While i think companies should make it as easy as possible to make an informed decision on what to buy or not (rating systems), or allow tools to monitor/restrict content (child safety password, content filters). Forcing the company to restrict what it produces, squashes the very notion of a free market and free society. The whole views that Jack Thompson supports is a very weak argument. He wants the game industry to stop producing anything violent, Because it's possible for a child to acquire a violent game if his parent's are naive and leave a violent game open or do not understand what they are purchasing. This is a bad solution and, Instead of pushing for companies to stop producing violent games, use all the incredible amount of resources and publicity to inform parents about the safety and censoring features that come with your game system. In the time that one of Jack Thompson's many televised shows is broadcasted you could inform just as many people about how the rating system works, or how to regulate what your children play. Jack Thompson is also quite laughable because he targets ONLY video games. He takes to the streets proclaiming, as if video games are the only violent media outlet. Studies show that the only difference between a movie and a video game, is a video game is more stimulating. Violence in a game and violence on a show have the exact same effect on a young child. though that is not to say his argument is completely ungrounded. Violent games are not to be played by young children, When a child is young (age<12) they are constantly extrapolating data from all around them to develop a sense of how the world should work. Everything that you do or learn will be based upon these childhood experience. At the age of 12 or 13 the mind makes a mental switch into a growing state of maturity. at this point in time you begin to learn how to think critically, differentiate fact from fiction and learn how to view things objectively. so allowing a child to experience any kind of violent media(books, videos, games) during childhood years can effect his/her outlook on life. on the other hand anyone over 12 (unless you have a mental condition or mature late) will be relatively unaffected by violent media. But this argument is for all forms of media not just games, and the fact that Jack feels the need to single out video games and dismiss psychology makes him seem more like a Centophobic old man, than a crusader for children |

MEh, I just think its odd someone know for being a total liar, used homosexual pornography in a submittion to the court, and was disbarred for his illegal/unethnical and often bizzare acts. Honestly, I thought the ideals of conservatism were truth, honestly, and non-homosexualism (extending from the bible, I believe? Although bare in mind, I'm not American, so have no idea about these things). I can understand them 'wanting freedom for the family' and extending that to 'censorship of rap and bad games'. But when he uses both lies, discreditable practises, and homosexual porno, I can't help but wonder why this group like him. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 70 Joined: 6 Feb 2008 | "because Jesus said if any of you should cause one of these little ones to stumble, it would be better for you that a millstone be tied around your neck and you be cast into the uttermost depths of the sea," so then that applies to the parents of these children as well. its been proven that children are very impressionable, and just watching, let alone playing, violent video games does cause serious harm, but that should just be common sense. there IS a ratings system for a reason, so that parents can take a quick look and KNOW that its not something their children should be playing. but so many dont do this, and then they complain when its more due to their lack of involvement than the material itself. so this actually perfectly describes the parents of these children more than it does those that make the material. lastly, jack thompson needs a psychological evaluation, if youve ever read his ramblings there are quite a few signs of serious mental disorders there, especially involving paranoia. |

This guy is so determined to stop "filth" from "polluting" our children that it's only right that he got recognized for it by his peers. The name of the reward is a bit.. wrong though :P |

Yes, we'll build it under the sea. Nothing could go wrong. Can anyone hear Bobby Darin's 'Beyond the Sea', by any chance? |

Beat Writer Posts: 142 Joined: 5 Apr 2008 | Justified or not, this award is going to reinflate his ego, which is quite annoying because being disbarred should have been the thing to finally get him out of our hair. Now he'll be even more determined to carry on his little crusade despite this. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2903 Joined: 21 Jan 2008 | First of all, hippo, we all know what Thompson's done, and we get why this is so ironic. As for the actual event, all I can say is that I've never really heard of the award before, so no skin off my back. It's not like he got TIME's 'Person of the Year' award or something... Oh, and:
This would be so much more constructive, since Big Brother is rated lower than video games for the same things. Why can't people face the real problems and stop looking for the scapegoat... |

Because the man is downright nasty. They are only awarding this to him because of partisanship and "fuck everything the other party supports" stubbornness. Like how I'd find it disgusting to award a humanitarian metal to people who advocate blowing up factories to stop global warming. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 681 Joined: 8 May 2008 | How does getting specific music and radio hosts banned constitute freedom ? The sheer stupidity of such a thing defies reason. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1122 Joined: 7 Mar 2008 | *sigh* This disapoints me a little. I didn't know what to expect, but I wasn't expecting a bunch of people to be conceving various means of tourture for the man. I thought most of us were more mature than that. Grow up. He won an award and he deserves it. He's fought for what he belives in, and fought pretty goddamn hard. And yes, he's stepped over the line quite a few times, but it's what he belives in, and he obviously belives he deserves it. If it were a police officer busting a drug lord, the man would be a hero, and you people would be bitching about how he took away your crack. Also, I belive the "Freedom" is reprisentitve of the freedom of "Good Christian Families" not to have to put up with what they belive is smut. Whether or not it is smut is a pointless argument and a moot point. Also, how hypocritical is it of all of you (with a few noteworthy exceptions) to be going on about how he doesn't respect your point of view when you obviously don't respect his, or any of his peers? Open your heads a little. Apologies Abound. |

Uh, no. We'd be bitching about how he shot 8 people who got in his way to the bust, busted a completely wrong house, and then continued to enact a personnel vendetta against those who he'd falsely busted. NOTE: There is standing up for your beliefs, and then there's viciousness, underhanded tactics, and outright lying. Thompson crossed that line years ago, and if you weren't so intent to play the offended angel, you'd see it. |

If so, then Freedom is indeed Slavery... my slavery, in service of their "freedom" to force me to serve their sense of morality instead of my own. If I want them to dictate my choices then I'd join their bluddy cult, wouldn't I? -- Steve |

There's a lot of smart people in America who don't deserve to be there right now. Let's set up a new country in Ouray, Colorado. Anyone read Atlas Shrugged?
