I preffer an assault rifle. Mainly because i can spot where someone is from almost any range with a slight magnification (unless they're extremly well camoflauged)

Second is a handgun, assuming i can actualy kill someone with one. It's so satisfying to kill someone with a handgun.

Third (if it counts) is any type of grenade really. I'm like, a freakin' grenadier, i kill atleast 2 people each time i respawn with grenades before i die.

I used to like the sniper rifle (and i used to like sneaking around) but now i can barely even HIT the damn enemy without shooting more than 3 times.

I'm that weird guy that really likes the hum-drum, stock, been-the-standard-machine-gun-ever-used-in-a-game. For some reason the gun just feels like a the pinnacle of weapons design. Even compared to games that have guns that shoot laserplasma and shoguns that shoot tigers I still like that steady tinkling of hot shells hitting pavement.

The medikit also did a few token points of damage when you hit someone with it.

... Thereby making it possible to get "Alice [medikit] Bob."

Not to be cliché, but ROFL!

It's a well-known fact that every shooter ever has a bunch of different full-auto weapons, usually varying based on size, recoil, stopping power, etc. I invariably find myself drawn to the smallest of them, since it's usually reliable, accurate, and has minimal recoil, but is still a machine gun. The damage usually isn't too impressive, but I still do reasonably well with them because they're accurate and reliable.

Lame, maybe, but it works for me.

I personally prefer the sniper rifles or SMG type weapons.

I like the stuff that throws the guy back when he gets hit, like magnums, shotguns, ect. Anything thats got a punch without being a rocket.

Shotgun. Push the barrel against his chin, blast the double barrels off, don't even bother to stop running while doing it. Awesome. In both single and multiplayer FPS games, the shotgun is my staple gun of choice.

Sniper rifles, I loathe and hate. They're cheap weapons, and I feel absolutely no joy from killing someone with one of these (single player slightly excluded). I hate getting killed by someone because, golly gosh on a stick, he's using a sniper rifle on the only spot on the map with one, which is a hundred miles away from the rest of the map, so he will dominate for the rest of the game because the map creators were morons.
Ergo, I don't kill others that way if at all possible to avoid.
(And if you find a camping sniper, please, kill him in the most insulting way possible. Balance a grenade on his stupid head. Pull out the worst weapon in the game and explicitly type out "Behind you, dipshit" before you kill him. Make these stupid people stop their ways and start playing like honorable men.)

Why do shotgun users always hate us snipers? I respect Snipers and Shotgunners more than Auto weapon users. We are bretheren. We are forced to long rang, outcasts in the game, loathed and abused. We are gods at range and ants at CQB. You, conversly, are gods of CQB and ants at range. We are so different, yet so similar. We must aim carefully, as do you. We should stop our petty bickering and focus on the real enemy, Automatic weapon users. They destroy us at CQB and obliterate you at long range, they are jacks of all trade and masters of most. We must team up, stop their spraying, and start their praying.

Long range assault rifles - preferably single shot on those games that stick their realism right up your jacksey. I like to sort of keep it all snipey and professional but without using an actual sniper rifle.

examples: G3 assault rifle in Rainbow6, M14 in COD4 Online, the Battle Rifle in Halo (goes without saying) and the M468 in Ghost Recon (sometimes in RB6)

anyone else think this depends majorly on the game. for example shotguns are usualy fun, but in farcry the sound the make is so wimpy it takes away from the fun.

Really depends upon the game. I am more fond of more realistic modern day FPS games such as most the Clancy series. I prefer shorter Assault Rifles, still decent at range but pretty good close in as well.

Machine gun. So long as it isnt as badly nerfed as the SMG in HL2.

Hey, us assaulties arn't so different. We are masters of the medium range. When someone comes up to us and is only 2 feet away, we have to use our knives, as the enemy will most surely use his. When we see someone 700 feet away we have to scope, not even sure the bullet will make it or if we'll even hit you. We are all different yet the same, as we all have our strength and weaknesses!

Now rocketiers...those are the ones we must shun.

Assault rifles - due to their versatility. With a decent assault rifle, you can engage targets out to ranges almost as far as you can see in most games, yet you can still compete on almost even terms with submachine guns in CQB.

I would go for long range weapons Like the AVRIL or the sniper rifle, I like those.

Anything rapid fire for me. Light machine guns are a good start. Heavy machine guns are even better. Gatling guns are my absolute favorite and in the rare cases I get to use one, I enjoy every last round they spew. I'm guessing you all know what class I play as on TF2 now lol.

I also like rockets and explosives (especially the RPG in HL2), but for me, nothing beats a good machine gun.

I love strong handguns. The Desert Eagle in Soldier of Fortune, for example.
But my favorite weapon in any game ever was Half-Life´s machine gun with built-in grenade launcher.

I'm going with the shotgun camp, but my favorite FPS weapon of all is the Rail Gun from Quake 2. I just love the sound it makes and the way it recoils. Oh, and the gibs flying everywhere when you snipe someone with it.

I think I'm leaning more towards Frags for some reason. Something about watching my enemies flee from the place the grenade landed warms my heart. It's even better when a CPU doesn't have anywhere to go (or it becomes seemingly confused) and just run into some impassable obstacle. Or they jump off into a big drop.

That or the pistol. I kill bosses with pistols. Always have. I just like the idea of having such a small weapon but with it you can kill whatever you please. Makes me feel experienced when I kill other players with a simple pistol when they are wielding the sniper rifle, shotgun, and rpg combo.

Much like Swenglish, I prefer a good handgun, ala Halo 1. I hate how in most games, they're just an underpowered sidearm. If I had a choice between wimply starting pistol and a slower firing, but rightly powerful magnum, I'd go with the magnum.

If you think shotguns are underpowered you should try playing CoD4 online :P

Spartan Laser from Halo 3, I love this gun just because it takes some skill in aiming it and even more when you're taking hits. I also have gotten more kills with this than the shotgun.

Baur from Battlefield 2142, I like this gun because of how powerful it is, despite the small magazine it has.

Crossbow from Bioshock, I like this weapon because it kind of didn't fit inside Bioshock alongside the other modern weaponry, but it still rivals them in power.

I am going to go with the majority and support the Shotgun here, and perhaps include the UT Flak Cannon in that category (my favourite FPS tool by far). Particularly the Doom 3 and Bioshock shotguns, they're just astonishingly satisfying to hit things with. Team Fortress 2? Nothing more amusing than playing Pyro and quickly dancing between shotgun and flamethrower range. Also, the Acid Shotgun from Prey is pretty outstanding, and quite unique in its look and effect.

Wow, I sound creepily obsessed.

I've never been that good at FPS games. Sure, there are some where I can beat the game on the hardest difficulty with the ratio of saves to swears falling somewhere around one to three, but I can never last more than 45 seconds in multiplayer.

That said, I can still ruin anyone's day with a grenade and knowledge of the physics system. If all else fails I'm moderately good with any burst fire rifle.

I'm a fan of mid-range semi-accurate guns, such as the AR2 Pulse Rifle, or the Covenant Carbine.

I also like Quirky guns like Halo 2's needler or the Rebel Crossbow.

For sheer, blistering heavy fire in everyone's favorite bland FPS, I still have a great deal of fondness for dual weilded elite plasma rifles.

But truly, there is nothing better than the thinking man's shotgun, the Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator. It is the be-all and end-all of handheld weaponry.

I'd go for whichever suits the situation best. Be it flakking someone's brain about or mowing down someone from mid-range or ventilating the brain from across the map. I don't really pick favorites, nor do I excell at any kind of combat, I focus on versatility.

You are right my friend. I was so blind. They can gib you from close range and afar. They are fully accurate and cause immense damage. The only disadvantage is speed. Which isn't a problem when you can, pardon my french, blow people into tiny fucking bits. They have had it too good for too long!

despite usually not being very good, the shotgun always feels good, especially pump action. The counterstrike one in particular felt very satisfying

Screw you guys!

RPGs all the time, every time.

Because I can shoot down helicopters with them in BF2.

I mean, you might have 'leet sniping skills' and the bunny hopping abilities of a cat with a jetpack; but I have a fucking rocket.

High five man. Anyway, when I started it, I couldn't get away from the crossbow in HL2, there's just something satisfying about nailing someone to a wall with a super-heated piece of iron, especially when you get their hit box but not their model and it kinda looks like they're floating.

My two friends were shocked, awed, and a little dismayed when I got a "Kill from the grave" with a frag grenade. My friend Zach does it all the time with Stickies, but I was the first to do it with a Fraggy. That is an honor I will carry to my grave!

And I also happen to like the Battle rifle and long range power guns

I also love the sniper rifle class, not knowing much about the weapons themselves all I know is the usually 50-60 cal shots (Desert Eagle standards) deliver quite a punch, in most games being a one hit sanction anywhere on the body. Very useful on some maps.

Find me a 60 cal hand held gun and I'll give you a prize. It has to be real though.

Rooms = shotgun
Corridor = SMG
Rooftop = sniper rifle
Anywhere else = something similar to a Gatling gun.
