I think PS3 will be the winner but it is going to take a little bit of time for them to get a solid flow of games. Wii doesn't bring much more to the table for me that Gamecube didn't already offer. |

Muckraker Posts: 237 Joined: 22 Jan 2008 | i like the wii i think it's alotta fun but the games for it right now are kinda flat. my vote goes to the 360 for alot of reasons 1.game selection is huge, the ps3 has maybe 2 games exclusive to it that sound like fun to play and i've heard people say they make good rentals, if i'm dropping that much cash on a system i want at least 10 games i can enjoy off the bat. if you want to watch blu-ray dvds a ps3 and the extra cable may be for you, but if you want to polay video games get a 360 and spare yourself sony's bullshit |
Press Junketeer Posts: 414 Joined: 14 Jul 2006 | I think it really depends what your after. Personally I love my wii. I only have 3 - 4 hours each week for gaming if I'm lucky and I'd prefer not to have to spend too much money on a hobby that really is only a couple hours a week, so the wii is perfect. There are plenty of great games available and they are a bit cheaper as a general rule. Plus the wii is perfect for parties and what not. I think the 360 is probably the best console out at the moment, it has more games, better online etc etc. But for me I just don't have the time to devote to it that I really would need to do it justice. I'm still thinking of picking one up as a media centre so I can stream movies and tv shows from my computer, but for me, the games would come as a second feature. The only thing the PS3 really has going for it at the moment is the bluray player, but right now I couldn't care less about bluray. I spend much more time watching movies and tv shows from files on my laptop than from dvds, which leads back to my interest in getting a media centre. |

I wouldn't get caught dead with an xbox even if it weren't made by microsoft because there's nothing on it except shooters with poor console controls. |

Beat Writer Posts: 223 Joined: 25 Jul 2006 | I suppose the short version is Wii. Because it's got pick up and play, and while not having the largest selection of games, the quality of the titles within it seems much higher. At the very least, they hold more appeal for me if not others. I'd cast my vote on the wii, I haven't got a PS3, nor do I think it likely I'll get one. I've not played any games for it, nor seen any I like. I do have a 360 however, and having played it a little bit, I still opt for the Wii instead. The selection isn't really that bad for it, I tend to take my time through games, and I still haven't had a chance to crack into Zelda, Metroid or Super Paper Mario. Mario Galaxy has my current console time and I've loved it quite a bit. It's easy to play for extended periods, but is very forgiving of my lack of consistent game time. Very pick up and play friendly. That leads me to an issue I have with the 360. It tries way too hard to be a media center, something the MythTV box does much better. I can't just pick up the controller and play with the 360. I loved the couple Wii Games I've had a chance to really sink into (Excite Truck and Rayman to be specific). The remainder of my gaming still happens on the PC, but it's currently being spent playing Neverwinter Nights, which I finally got around to buying - $20 shipped diamond edition on amazon. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it. If it's not that I'm playing Heroes of Might and Magic 5. I can't say that my 360 really does more than collect dust nowadays for me, though my roomate does enjoy playing Halo3 multi with people. A PS3 would likely suffer an even worse fate. I don't really have anything anti ps3 except it's price tag for entry. I don't care about HD because to me the future is going to be downloadable / streamed. It's certainly going to exist along side the physical copies, and may eventually supplant them. The 360 doesn't have any games that really pique my interest, has the most annoying menu system that can't seem to leave me alone once I'm in a game and really doesn't do anything for me. |

I remember my brother saying that and I immediately exclaimed "no the don't" but thinking back he was right. It's hard to name a game that's not a shooter. I seriously can't think of any besides Oblivion, Assassins Creed, Project Gotham, Ace Combat. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any. My PC holds all those games that have concurrent support such as Bioshock and Half-Life 2 (Curse Ace Combat and Mass Effect for being out of my reach!) I'd have to say Wii because it's cheap enough for me to pool more money towards the PC. There are very few games for it "but to what little there is, has been polished to a mirror shine." Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime and the soon to be Brawl are EXTREMELY fun. Gameplay and a few elements deeper into the story do change (not including the overall top layer of plot, save the princess). I admit I have not played Metroid Prime: Echoes yet so I don't know how overused that game is yet. The weakness is of course the fact that it's mostly casual games an crap but I don't have a burning hunger for mass quantities games since I don't play 24/7, and my friends have the multilayer systems. I pray for an F-Zero game that supports online play (DS is another possibility) |
Copy Clerk Posts: 115 Joined: 16 Dec 2007 | I got a PS3 and am LOVING it. I did a lot of research - games out right then, upcoming launches, etc. - before I bought my PS3. The reason I chose PS3 over the 360 was pretty simple. The 360 has sports titles, FPS, Mass Effect, and... Uh... ? The PS3 has a little bit of everything. As some one who doesn't care about FPS or sports games, that's a lot more appealing. It opened up with a jab of Ratchet & Clank, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, some Ninja Gaiden Sigma <which is technically an exclusive, but not really>, etc. Variety! The first nasty right hook was the REALLY good stuff that's coming up. LittleBig Planet. MGS4. Tekken 6. WarDevil. [at the time] Devil May Cry 4. The 360 having no more good exclusives (that I've heard of) lined up. Then the free online... Then the PS3 threw the 'backwards compatibility' (I didn't have a PS2) into the ring and TKO'd the 360. In short: 360: Started off as the more solid console between the heavy weights. Sony made a few gigantic blunders at the beginning, and it really helped sell the 360. Wii: Was the innocent lightweight that every one fawns over, but can't really deal with its 'real' competitors on technical aspects. A few gimmicks, a good marketing campaign, and BAM. Bajillions of them sold, mostly to people that aren't concerned with the fact that it's about as powerful as the PS2. PS3: Like a charging rhinoceras, a slow rumbling start. It's starting to break into a gallop now, though, and soon it'll hit the full run - from there, it'll obliterate all its opposition. I've noticed things that used to ridicule the PS3 now worship it. And it hasn't even hit its full stride yet. |

Muckraker Posts: 330 Joined: 7 Nov 2007 | I have a Wii and a 360. I haven't played the Wii since Resident Evil 4 came out on it. Not that there aren't titles on it I want, I can just wait until there's more. I figure five titles in one hit will compel me to get behind my TV and switch out the cables instead of just reaching for a 360 controller and firing up some Halo or Mass Effect. We have Super Mario Galaxy and Raving Rabbids 2 - now I just need SSBB, Mario Kart Wii, and No More Heroes to be released locally, then I'll go on a Wii spree. The PS3 has a grand total of two exclusives I'm interested in playing. I will probably pick one up before the end of the year, the exact point that happens will depend largely on what titles coming out for it I want to play. There are a lot of good looking exclusives scheduled for 2008, but will I want to play them? I won't know until they've been reviewed and I know exactly what I'm buying. |

Spot the closet rabbit ms hater. To burst your little bubble there; the ps3 almost has just as many shooters with 'broken controls'. What other genres exactly are so much better on the ps3? Saying that the 360 only has shooters is just as rubbish as saying that the ps3 only has BRD and the wii only has mini/kidsgames. Just because they are best in those fields doesn't mean that they have nothing else. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 83 Joined: 8 Jan 2008 | PS3 : I dont need any kind of blue-ray cinema, I dont like the games that are out yet , I dont care about the upcomming games like MGS and finaly its much too expansive. No way. 360 : This one might me be closest one I would buy, but the ROD, even if there is only the possibility it could happen to me, drives me crazy. The line up fits very well, the price seems ok, but still, there remains the problem I should buy a new TV for it. And I dont watch TV anymore. It was a close decision, but even the 360 would not make it because the majority of games arrive on the PC too and I dislike Halo. Wii : Again, I was close to buy this one too. Mario Galaxy, Zelda TP and Metroid Prime 3 realy got my attention. The problem is, what would happen after I got this 3 ? Maybe I will buy WiiFit too, but somehow I fear, I will stuck on just a few titels like it happened with my Gamecube and N64. If I would have too much money, It would be a 360 and Wii combination, I think that would fit for all my "gaming needs". But now, it will be none of them. |
Paperboy Posts: 41 Joined: 6 Nov 2007 | i see that the ps3 fans hate how the 360 has too many shooters, atm shooters is the way 2 go, the 360 has alot of different shooters, all the ps2-3 have is devil may cry and resident evil and about 5 sequels and just cause the 360 has brought out bioshock, a game the ps3 can only dream about playing doest make the ps3 bad, yeh they have there own version of hi def and its way more expensive (blue ray movies are around 40-47$ aus and a new release on hi def or norm is 27-35$) i enjoy going to my friend's place and getting my butt whooped on his games he already got mastered. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 77 Joined: 14 Dec 2007 | 360 for me. One of the main reasons i went for Xbox was because of the controller. The PS controller had, after countless years, ruined my thumbs. Having to stretch my left thumb over to the middle of the controller was becoming too painful after an hour or two of gaming, and when i picked up the 360 controller it just felt so... right! Also, as a massive fan of shooters the 360 games library is fantastic! |
Anonymous Source Posts: 3 Joined: 16 Jul 2007 | Well, you're ruling out the PC and I understand why (different configs for different budgets and use...), but it played a big part in my choice of going for a Wii. I have a powerfull enough PC and that's my main solo gaming plateform for FPS, RTS, Strategy and RPGs/MMOs. Recently got a Wii for the classic Nintendo licences, as well as the multiplayer casual possibilities. Great console for my use, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it if that's to be your unique console and you play a lot. Looking only at the available games on the market and the ones coming in the few next months, my go would be X360. The PS3 doesn't have enough games and upcoming exclusivities to seduce me, right now, though it has potential. (and to be honest, I couldn't care less 'bout Blue-Ray) But trying to guess what the market will be in more than a year seems pretty impossible, so anyone willing to get THE console that will be the mainstream gaming plateform of the years to come is actually walking on eggs... |
Paperboy Posts: 15 Joined: 21 Jan 2008 | Now I know its not likely to be an opinion that is going to be held in the highest regard on these here internets, but I have to say that the system I enjoyed the most last year was the Wii. Since I was (finally) able to pick one up last January, I've really had nothing but great things to say about the console, and have played it just about every day since, everything from from brief to epic sessions. Now granted, at my place theres always a bunch of people around, so of course not only do they usually want to "check out the Wii", but, as been much lauded about the system, it really shines as a multiplayer or 'party' system once they do. But even aside from that, its just really had the most games that I personally have wanted to play, and have had a blast playing. Let me elaborate. I've been gaming since the arcades/2600 days, and have enjoyed or owned nearly every home system released since then. One thing that has pretty much always remained true about this industry is that anything good or original that gets popular at all will be copied and repeated ad-nauseum. Pac-Man, Mario, SF2, Doom, these are just a few games in the past that created or re-invented genres, and in turn inspired countless imitators that often end up killing the popularity gained by said games or genres due to over-saturation. It happens all the time, and will probably not stop anytime soon. But this negatively affects gamers. Because as much as many of those imitators turn out to be equal or better than their inspirations (Sonic, King of Fighters, GoldenEye, etc.), there is always way more crap to wade through (Keith Courage, Fighters History, Daikatana[!], etc.), and this affects gamers' trust and faith in future games released for that genre, and often their interests turn to other genres. I speak of my personal experience, and from having many gamer friends and knowing their gaming habits well. We get bored of the same old thing, and get into something new. Sure, we'll still play and love the odd good game in each respective battered genre that still gets released, but for the most part we move on, in a sense. All this talk of genres and repetition does relate to my answer, I assure you, and here's why. I think the 360 is a phenomenal gaming console, and I'd hate to not have access to that wonderful library, but for the most part I've just been kinda bored with everything getting released for it lately. It's really starting to feel like 'been there, done that' with a lot of 360 games for me personally. Too many shooters. There, I said it. I just feel that too many of the AAA games on 360 are shooters of some kind, especially in the past 6 months or so. The crazy thing though? These games are awesome! Bioshock, Gears, Halo 3, anything Tom Clancy, CoD 4, The Frickin' Orange Box, geez, these games are perfecting shooters lately. And yes, I do like (quite a bit actually) these games, but overall I don't feel that 'pull' to play what really amounts to the 'different but the same' feeling I get from them all. They start to blur together, and start to feel like repetitious activities in a way, honestly. Actually the saving grace of the 360 to me is XBLA, which has an incredibly attractive and robust library, and many games only available there are now all-time favorites of mine that I would never give up. For the most part, when I think of playing 360, and its not for Guitar Hero or Portal (a FPS I never find boring), its usually an XBLA game I'm itching to play. With all that said (whew!), I feel the Wii has truly been a breath of fresh air to the open-minded gamer who truly places an emphasis on getting 'fun' out of 'playing' their 'games', over graphics and raw power. I just wanna play some godamnn video games, and I don't need it all to look true to life or have epic storylines. Those are very important apects to games these days, and I love how the industry's matured to this point and do enjoy these titles, but, shit, that's why I watch movies, I don't necessarily need it from my video games too. It's no secret there's been garbage released thus far for the system, but the same can be said about every successful console, including the 360 & PS3. Geez, look at the PS2! But as a so-called "hardcore gamer" I don't buy those turds, so I've been very satisfied thus far with it. The good games, to me, are just SO good that I really WANT to play them. Galaxy, Corruption, Zack & Wiki (I SO love this game), Strikers, WarioWare, Godfather (admitted guilty pleasure), GW:Galaxies (which first captivated me on XBLA, mind you), ExciteTruck, Ghost Squad (so fun w/2 or more), SPM, even Wii Sports still, just to name a few a few of the 19 games I have for the system already, and I want to play all of these games all of the time (well, I could forget about Red Steel and Wii Play to tell you the truth, and Elebits was only really fun for about a week or two). I feel I don't even have enough time to play everything I have, never mind all the games I want sitting on shelves still, or soon to be released (No More Heroes and Brawl are both eagerly anticipated). And that's not even counting the many VC games I've downloaded thus far. Heck, I spent a couple weeks pretty much only playing Sin & Punishment when it was released. Sure, not every game released is brimming with originality, and I'd like to see less reliance on ports and mini-games, but to say that's all this system has to offer is incredibly short-sighted by anyone who truly considers themselves a gamer, I feel. In a way, the Wii is the only real "video game" machine out there. That statement could burn me, but what I mean is that is has the most games that are just that; pure games. No pretentiousness, no elitism, no in your face-ness, its not really pretending to be anything other than a video game player, pure and simple. And as a long-time "hardcore gamer" I like that, and am drawn to that, more and more than I am to yet another game that simply has me aiming a gun, for example. I must say that I am incredibly interested in the PS3, and would love to own one of those as well. If I pick one up this year, and with the games released thus far and slated for release this year, this could be a VERY different answer next year. PS3 looks poised to show why Sony has been so cocky about it all along, and I think they're gonna make a lot of people believers. But, for the last year, the Wii (aside from my trusty DS) has been the most played and enjoyed system in our household, by far. |

Ill settle this. You wont win if you just get one of the systems. what i suggest is Wii, since it has good games that wont be found anywhere else, and then a 360 for everything else(sorry ps3 but you are not having a good time as of now). |

Not that i've got anything against the 360, it's got a solid line up at the mo but given time the PS3 will not just catch up but exceed it. |

Paperboy Posts: 20 Joined: 12 Dec 2007 | I have a 360 and a Wii. I've had a 360 for 2 years and the Wii for 1 and i personally think the 360 is the best. Sure the Wii is better for just having a laugh with friends and does have some nice games (zelda being the one i played) but i just prefer the 360 so much more as the games on it appeal to my "kill things and laugh" side. I dont know about the PS3 as i played one in a shop and thought the controller was a bit naff (especially by comparison to the 360s) and the game that was on (which i cant remember the name of but it was a driving one and i think its one of the main package deal games atm) was...well....not very captivating. Plus the PS3 at the moment severely lacks games so the 360 wins it for me. Also, I have a laptop as im at uni and its shite for games hence why i couldn't say PC. If i did have a good one like my friend then i probably would have said that. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1519 Joined: 18 Sep 2007 | Don't buy a console for the name on the console. Buy a console for the games it supports. Hardware without the software is just an expensive way to heat your home. I chose a 360 because I wanted to play Halo 3 and Gears of War, and I thought the Live Arcade would have the games I want. Then, of course, Mass Effect, Orange Box, Crackdown, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, and Assassins' Creed came along. (Still waiting to buy the last two.) So looks like, for me, this was the right choice. Others likely will have different preferences, and so the choice could be different for them. Maybe all they want to play is Wii Sports, or they're desperate for Metal Gear Solid 4... and that's fine. (That being said, if you're already looking to get a Blu-ray player then a PS3 is probably a good pick given the price of stand-alone players... but only if you can see games you want to play in the Sony catalog.) -- Steve |

With all due respect the PS3 has been out for only a fair while compared to the 360 which I think is running to, what, 2 years now? I don't own a PS3 or a 360 (although I did own a 360 for 2 weeks before selling it off) so this isn't 'fanboy rant'. But it's a bit unfair to slam the PS3 for only having a handful of titles in so little time when all the 360 had for a while was Kameo and Dead or Alive 4. If I can remember correctly, back when I was a Sega Dreamcast fanboy, when I'm not sure my testicles had yet dropped, I used to slam the PS2 for only having Metal Gear Solid 2 to shout about. In hindsight, the PS2 has a great number of classics (some of which I still own). No game console in the last decade or two has shown its true potential and have a good list of AAA titles until at least 2 or so years after its initial launch. |
