It was hard as balls, there was a ton to explore, and the spell 'Exit' was absolutely the greatest spell in the entire game because it took you out of dungeons immediately. Contra because it was awesome though myself, my brother and our neighbor never managed to beat it. EDIT: Holy crap, how could I forget these. Sim City, Sim Tower, Sim Copter, Oregon Trail (I loved Oregon Trail and still pick it up every once in a while), Amazon Trail and Descent. Descent was just a great game and I remember at one time it was installed on just about every computer in my middle school. |

The Repton series was very good, and there was a nearly pointless game called 'Pod' where you would type in commands in the form of 'Pod Can...' and the character on the screen would follow them. It was always fun typing in 'Pod Can Pop' and watching the tubby bugger explode. |

It was a point & click adventure game with some of the funniest humor I remember as a kid. I even saw it on sale at Gamestop the other day, but it had all 7 games in the series on one cd, so I was totally overjoyed, having only played two of them myself. |

Still do, but I was unable to play it for a few years -- which seemed like a very long time back then -- because we switched from DOS to Windows and it took a while before we found the appropriate port. When I was (probably) 7, my entire family except for Mom fell in love with a now-thoroughly-obscure (apparently it got good reviews at the time but sold poorly) TPS RPG adventure-game thingy (I suck at classification) by the name of Outcast. I was terrible at it and needed help all the time, but it was fun, and it provided more family in-jokes than any game before or since. I don't count most of the edutainment games I used to play (although I did play a lot of Magic School Bus and Math/Reading Blaster games), but the original Zoombinis will always have a special place in my heart. I loved that game when I was in second grade, missed it for years when they took it off the school computers, and got more enjoyment out of it than I should really admit to when I finally got the chance to buy it for myself six years later. I was always a fan of the Oregon Trail, too, although I played... I think it was the fourth edition, rather than the original. |

I loved how you didn't know were to go but could go anywhere, finding secret upgrades in the corners. Contra was another b/c co-op was just so great, and so was the weapon selection. And Rygar too. I don't know why, I just loved it. |

Also, Golden Axe 2 was inexplicibly popular for the same reason. Me playing the stubby green little dwarf, whoever was playing with me playing as the magic-user who'd pick up the bottles and summon dragons when we needed it. Good times. Good times. |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 873 Joined: 29 Dec 2007 | Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were my first real games as a child, and probably had some horrible effect on my young, 5 year old mind, but it wasn't worse than watching Full Metal Jacket or Heavy Metal so I can't reall complain about that. I also have fond memories of watching my brother play Resident Evil and RE2 on our tiny, 16" TV that resembled something from Fallout. To me, Chris Redfield was gaming's first badass, his grizzled, slightly crazed image graced our copy of the game's director's cut and at the time seemed to be the epitome of manliness. Finally, I remember my first forays into the world of RTS games with Starcraft and Homeworld. The latter probably being my favorite game of all time. It's expansive maps and halfway decent storyline grabbed me by my prepubescent mind and would not let go until I was spending hours trying to get past the Gardens of Kadesh. |

ZOOMBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINIVILLE! Ah, good times. I also forgot to mention "Jazz Jackrabbit." Surprising to learn 10 years later that those who made Jazz also made Unreal Tournament. |

And I had to walk six miles to school through the snow, wind in my face both ways... In my 'tweens/teens, though, arcade games like Spy Hunter, Defender (I sucked at that one), Battlezone, Zaxxon, Bosconian, Qbert, and the like kept me quarter-poor. Later on we got a C=64c (Dad won it as a door prize at a company Christmas dinner) and that led to Impossible Mission, Space Taxi, Gunship, and Red Storm Rising binges. -- Steve |
