i think Zelda is one, since ocarina of time the changes are not accepted very well, the majoras time system and the sailing with cel shading in wind waker come to my mind

I agree for the very same reasons. I wouldn't say that Ocarina of Time fans are ruining the series *yet*, but they certainly are threatening to stagnate it.

I also vote for SSB. Lots of bad experiences here...

I'm a Zelda fanboy, but I agree that it's time for a change. And by the way I LOVED what they did in Majora's and Wind Waker.

Super Smash Brothers indeed. Here in Washington they try to ban Fox and certain stages in the tournaments. I play as fox anyway, some fag I'm beating cries about, and the judges shrug and tell him he can go home. Fans ruin games, judges make them good again. ^_^ Universe=at peace.

And yes, Halo has been ruined by the ten year olds and BDS complex players.
Half Life is great, but there is too much Freeman love here (It's practically a cult), so it kind of spoils the subject for me.

Fallout.

This is the most tragic one. It's hard to take Fallout fans seriously with NMA and RPGcodex around. Maybe if not for these people, I would actually hold out a bit of hope for Fallout 3 being a good Fallout game, but as it is, I imagine a lot of people at Bethesda think all Fallout fans are totally nuts.

As for Halo... am I the only one who doesn't constantly run into annoying squeakers and total douchebags during every match? I hear about those people ruing every game on XBL, but from personal experience, it seems the issue is vastly overstated. I suppose it may be in part because I rarely do anything other than lone wolves or doubles in Halo 3, and I hate Gears of War multiplayer to begin with.

If you want to see a game get ruined by it's fans. Come to the Team Fortress 2 forums on Steampowered.com and just wait for the griping to commence, if the front page isn't littered with threads about nerfing this or buffing that to begin with. They, I don't want to say cater, but respond to a lot of people's comments, and sadly the most vocal aren't necessarily the best judges. It seems like it's going downhill fairly fast...

If the people at Valve listened to the people on the forums I think CS would be a very different game. So I don't think we have much to worry about.

They respond, but in a broad way. And they do not always give in.

Sonic.

Yeah, the developers take equal blame, but even the shit Sonic games actually sold quite well, well enough for them to continue up until 2006. Without the backlash of their games tanking at retail, Sonic Team never really caught on to the fact that they were Doing It Wrong.

I don't exempt myself from that criticism either, because it took until that 2006 abomination to stop me automatically buying anything with a funny coloured hedgehog in it.

The Guitar Hero Series, I mean I miss playing a friendly competition on normal difficulty and still struggling. Now I have to put up with expert ADHD psycho and Mr. 99% on every song.

Portal - As much of a great game (or even great Gameplay Demo, some opposite of Crysis) it was, a bunch of nerds screaming THE CAKE IS A LIE across the internet completely ruined the internet.

To hell we all screamed that but 90% stopped after the first week, while the other 10% ruined the game.

And get the fuck over with the Companion Cube. It's just a fucking cube with a a heart on it, because Portal testers were a bunch of retards who didn't know why they should carry the cube through the whole test chamber.

Yeah, I don't understand the companion cube obsession either. Any formerly great single player game that involves online play where the developers have decided to jump the shark and pander to the online crowd at the expense of the game itself. Halo 2 and 3, COD 4 come to mind as their single player modes have been all but abandoned by Bungie and Infinity Ward in favor of the less costly development on the online componant. I am sorry, but charging full price for a game that is less than eight hours is ridiculous. Can't blame the developers for trying to make an easy buck but come on people. We need to demand more from game companies, especially given how much a game costs these days.

Your issue appears here not to be "The Fans" but that other people are better than you at Guitar Hero. And that's something you're really going to have to learn to accept about a very great many things in life.

Halo is a game that crumbled under the weight of its own ego and hype.
Halo 1 rocked. Halo 2 was decent. Halo 3 is no better than a fan-game.

Halflife 2 IMHO is ruined by the fact that you are a pariah if you ever are caught not loving it to death, and wishing Gordon Freeman to spawn your children.

WoW is ruined by everyone on the Alliance side, and all the fucking idiots who can't stomach a game if it isn't all PvP all the time.

Gunbound. If you played it, like me, you probably left because of other players, not any dislike of the game.

I have some friends (and I'm using that word VERY loosely) who's a rabid Halo 3 fanboy. I finally found a way to shut him up by saying this: "I played Halo before it was even CALLED halo. I played the Marathon trilogy!" (I'm a Mac user boycotting Microsoft, and Marathon was a game made by Bungie and released in '94, EXCLUSIVELY on the Mac. Started a trilogy. When Bungie sold out to Microsoft they took the Marathon trilogy, stripped it and its storyline of all appreciable intellectual depth, upgraded the graphics, and renamed it Halo.) To this day, the Halo fandom has the unique dishonor of not just ruining ONE game series, but TWO: Halo AND Marathon. I am upset about what Sonic Team has done to their namesake. It's reached the point where I wish they'd just start over again like the people behind Batman have done. (Christian Bale for the win). I think Yahtzee really really got it right with his review of Halo 3. Now I am a Myst fan but WTF Cyan, releasing Myst on a HANDHELD?! Are you out of your fekking MIND?!

Hear hear! I can rather easily be classed as a Zelda fanboy, and yet, I'm pretty sure every game based on OoT's base engine has improved on what was offered, culminating in the awesome that is Twilight Princess.

I'm also NOT going to say Halo's been ruined (mostly because I've never played it online, so no such poor experiences) and will instead state that practically any fighting game with tournaments is auto-ruined by its fans - they obsess, they train, and they forget that the real purpose of games is to enjoy them.

I'm assuming that we're talking about the rabid, screaming, dimwit fanboys as opposed to people who like the game.

That being the case I'm going to nominate COD4 and Rainbow Six Vegas, the loonies on them inspired me to only play the single player of them.

Tetris!

I guess that Halo has become a well fanboy-guarded piece of gaming.

I fail to see how any level of fanboy-ism, no matter how rabid, can ruin a single player game, with the possible exception of spoilers. Yes Portal and HL2 have insane amounts of love and crazy ass fans, but so what?

Make your own mind up, and play (or not, as the case may be). Problem solved.

It didn't ruin the actual game[Portal] but changed it into a internet-wide meme. And over-abused memes suck.

Halo 3 if only because it killed any hope of intelligent discourse on video games for at least a month.

me: "I'm really looking forward to what Ace Combat 6 will offe-"
other "HALO 3!!11!!"
me: "Well, Bungie kinda killed the single player campaign and I'm not a big mult-"
other "HALO 3 ROXORZ!!!!1!"
me: "First, please use real words. Second, Halo really went downhill after-"
other: "HALO 3!!!1!!!"
me: "Right. I'm gonna play Gears of War now."
other "HALO 3!!!!1!!!!!11"
me: "SHUT UP!"

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say when I'm with my friends we act like complete douchebags. We find the stupidest stuff funny and screwing around on xbox live is just another joke. I find it accepted like that because we're having fun and we're not really serious. It's when people who are obviously alone in there house start yelling at you cause you cant go 40 and 1 in team deathmatch that really pisses me off.

Games I think have been ruined: Portal, Halo, WoW, SSBM

Halo. Halo. Halo. Also Halo. The original was decent. I'll give it that. But the fanboys... urgh.
WoW as well.

Real convo with an old friend from school.
Me: So, how about Rise of Legends? Looks like a pretty cool game.
Him: I heard of it, but I have no time or wish to play anything but WoW. Rise of Legends is gonna suck.
Me: ...What? How can you tell?
Him: Everything sucks compared to WoW. It's the best computer game.
Me: ........

(Rise of Legends ended up rocking very hard just like I thought it would, but was way too underrated. Pity.)

Also, someone want to explain why fallout fans are bad? I never met anyone who was all like "FALLOUTISTHEONLYGAMEONEARTHWORTHPLAYING!!!". They're usually "Yeah, those were great games!"

Is it cheating to just say "Nintendo"? I used to love Nintendo games and consoles but after a while I grew tired of them. I once posted on my blog/journal thing on another site how I had become disenchanted with Nintendo and while I thought the Wii was an interesting concept I didn't see any games for the system that made me want to buy it just yet. I was then assaulted by comments from about a dozen Nintendo fans calling me all sorts of names (ironically one was "fanboy") and saying how stupid I was for not realizing the Wii was Jesus Christ in console form. My first game system was an NES, I own four generations of Nintendo consoles and two generations of portables, but suddenly I'm lower that dirt because I'm not worshiping at the jewel encrusted alter of Miyamoto and buying a Wii for every TV in my house. That experience ruined Nintendo for me.

Say what you will about Halo fanboys (annoying as they are), but you have to admit Nintendo fanboys are among the worst of the worst. The word "rabid" hardly does some of them justice.

#1 Go here: http://www.nma-fallout.com/
#2 Read forums
#3 Now you know

Seriously, fallout fans are L-O-O-N-E-Y.
There are a few reasonable ones but most of them are just batshit. I am a fallout fanboy, and my position on F3 is rather extreme compared to most peeps out there, but these guys are SCARY. I read the forums for entertainment (like the monkey house at the zoo) value and info on mods mostly.

I have to admit that I wish that Troika (R.I.P) or Obsidian were making F3 instead of Bethesda. Elder Scrolls games are alright, but their strengths are diametrically opposed to what made fallout so wonderful. F3 might be a good game on it's own terms, but it cant live up to the legacy.

I hate the ones that are like "HURR HURR U SUK" when it's the first time you've EVER used the PS2 controller to play the game.

People took the joke of the companion cube being a serious companion seriously just as a joke. No one was ever THAT serious about killing the companion cube. They made a big deal of it because they thought it was funny.

Most games that come with its own side order of freshly baked bread and over-hype. Halo is by far the number one offender, but every game has its fanboys and all fanboys can burn in flames... please.

the obvious ones like halo have been mentioned, but i am shocked no one has said GEARS OF WAR. i finnaly got the game a month after it came out because my friends were constantly creaming there pants about it. played it maybe a week and i was done. same with COD 4, you can semi customize you gun...good job even though you whole goal is to get (insert gun here) with red dot or sniper with whatever the hell the scope is.

i will agree with WoW, though i still play it. i'll say Zelda as well.
I won't say Halo fans ruined the Halo games, though. Because the games weren't good enough from the start to say that the fans ruined it. that statement implies that the games were fantastic until fanboys screwed it up. I think that is giving the Halo series too much credit to start with.

I don't think there are enough fanboys for Gears of War to say that they ruined the game, either. i think the game kinda ruined itself by being the length of an afternoon.

No, Microsoft ruined it actually. You're right. If only Bungie had been given the artistic freedom to make the game as they pleased and not how Microsoft envisioned it.

Gears of War wasn't really ruined. There wasn't much to ruin. :p

Yeah.... I really wanted to play Ace Combat 6... Then my brother told me it is simply AC4 with more planes... And I logged so many hours on AC4 I would be qualified to fly Intercontinental 747s for JAL...

I'm personally sick and tired of playing Guitar Hero online and everytime you get more than 1000 points ahead of your opponent, they disconnect. For gods sake, at least TRY to catch up.

I see you've never met a music game elitist.

The kind that quit the song when they get a single non-perfect judgment.
The kind that whine when songs are too easy, or crappy because they can't nail every last note in a certain measure.
The kind that grind on the same song, over and over again, until they have a perfect score.
The kind that make fun of people who aren't working miracles on the game, because they're playing it casually for fun.
The kind that get visibly upset when they don't get their perfect score.

And it's not just Guitar Hero. We're talking DDR. Rock Band. Beatmania IIDX. Pop'n Music. Any music game you can think of probably has an elitist associated with it.

As for what you said, Guitar Hero is not a good example of people being "better" than you in life. Obsession over perfection in a videogame can be self-destructive. Perhaps that's something you can take to heart.

Where to begin? Shadowrun, Star Wars Galaxies...

Wait, this is games ruined BY fans, not FOR fans. Sorry.

Going to have to go with Halo 3 as well. I didn't get it til a month after it had been released, and by then it had been so overhyped that anything short of Cortana coming out of the screen and giving me oral sex was a letdown.

I'd also have to say anything with the word "Mario" either in it or connected to it beyond the first Mario Bros arcade game. I know I've just upset about a third of the forum, however, I just don't have it in me anymore to care anymore.

Super Smash Bros. Easily.

Don't get me wrong, I think the games are a load of fun especially when you get a bunch of your friends together for multiplayer butt-serving, but the tournament players rank very high on my list of people I feel should be culled from the gaming crowd. If you wanna be a tournament player and show how good you are at a game, especially one as fun as SSB, that's great, but tournament elitism is taken to disturbing extremes and if you dare complain about the tournament scene, then according to them you're just whining because you suck at the game. There is no one group in the gaming community that annoys me more than those people, and between Halo/PS3/Nintendo fanboys, MMORPG jerks, and my ex-girlfriend, that covers a whole lot of ground, my friends. I mean, have you met my ex-girlfriend?

The free to play Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

Some years ago it was a neat team game. Fast paced, interesting maps, well balanced. To me it was much more fun than the slow-paced Battlefield series, and fuled by id-technology it had a very good netcode, unlike Battlefield.
Nowadays nearly every server out there uses custom maps, where the only custom is that you will get blown up at your spawn by some guy with a rocketlauncher. He got this because nowadays these server save the XP you get during rounds even after logging out, so that these people got all the upgrades and weapons.
So these days you play on horribly bad designed maps against completely unbalanced enemies. Too bad, because the game being free you could just tell some friends to download it and blast away.
