I'm at an average level of skill I guess, but better than I was not long ago. I used to start a game on easy just to get through and experience the story, but now I'll start on normal or medium or whatever. I do suck quite badly at multiplayer though, I'm just not competitive enough I guess. I'm quite good at single-player RPG's and pretty good at FPS's.

Well, seems Im not the only one who sucks at FPS'. I prerfer a good Action/Adventure. Or just action. I'm very good at Devil May Cry, because it's pure combat, but Ninja Giaden, which is timing, more then combat, I'm only decent (normal difficulty, nothing else, ever). Platformers I'm usually good at, fighters I'm okay, but the Smash series I'm actually good at (not great, good). I'm horrible at puzzle games, to the point that asking me to play them annoys me. RPG's that are turn based, well, I'm grind obsessed, so I don't usually have too much trouble playing them. Non-truned based RPG's, not quite as good, but still good enough to get through them, albeit, not nearly as quickly (need to grind even more).

I find that I'm good at action games (3rd person titles) that rely on short range combat, but hand me an FPS or RPG and I will royally stink at it

There is no exception to how i suck/rule at games (mainly FPSs now, little of SSB) and i ALWAYS play the lower levels of difficulty first and then i bump it up. I guess you could say that i "practice" with my games.

pretty bad at RPG's, medium at FPS's (against friends/single player) and medium at RTS's (against friends/computer)

so yeah, pretty average :P

I don't profess to be some god at gaming but I'm not bad at it. I've never had online gaming capacity and you can only learn so much playing AI. It is hard to gauge what makes a good gamer, would it be persistence or natural ability?

Many of us who absolutely love the _Civilization_ games...never really win with any consistency at Monarch level or higher.

I'm okay. I'd probably be better if

a.) I didn't over-identify with my character. This makes WRPGs my favorites, but means that it tend to take getting shot/zombie-thrashed personally.
b.) I didn't have such a short attention span/low frustration threshold. Thank god for walk-throughs, or I'd throw way too many controllers at the puzzles.
c.) My hands didn't shake. Eh, what are you going to do?

I'd have to say for the most part I'm good at games, although I suck at RTS's, and I'm also not very competitive at FPS's because I barely play them.

I consider myself good at every game I play, the problem is I tend to get bored of a game once I reach a certain level of skill, making me feel like the solution to my boredom is to play another kind of game, finish it, beat people on it (if possible) and so forth.

I doubt I'll become a master of any game, but at least I can feel like an acomplished gamer by playing through so many games in my life.

It also feels very good to test my skill against friends that only do well in a couple of games and sometimes beating them, I guess being an All-Round gamer gives a different view (been there, done that).

I have a very unique level of skill. I suck at FPS's and some RTS' (the ones that are like RUSH RUSH RUSH), but when given a chance to think about things, I improve exponentially to a degree. Out of all my "skills":
Fighting games: average, I like to use arcade sticks vs. control pads, so sometimes it's hard to compete.
RTS: if I have enough time to develop the bare minimum (i.e. a game like Kohan vs. Starcraft), I do pretty well
Puzzle/TBS/Card games: My strongest suit. If there aren't glitches in the game/broken characters/etc. I can do incredibly well (which is why I rule at Bubble Bobble and suck at Tetris Attack). Ironically enough, the way I play these games is not through over-analysis, but rather by instinct.

I played Dynasty Warriors on Easy for around 5 years. Well, y'know, all the games in the series?

As soon as I moved up to Medium on Samurai Warriors 2; I got absolutely owned, heh.

The only games I've only been really good at are Hitman and Super Mario Kart, strangely enough.

Heh.

I'm glad someone made this thread. I'm terrible at video games, despite pouring 100 hours or more into the ones I play. I even gave up on Oblivion on normal difficulty because I ended up trying a non-fighter type character. I'm miserable at FPS's because my reaction time is crap, but I'm pretty good a jRPG's because they tend not to be time-sensitive.

There are only two games in which I take any sort of pride in my skills: SSBM, where I can take 2 level 7 CPU opponents on the same team, and Audiosurf with a ninja mono, where I have the global high-score for J-E-N-O-V-A, by The Black Mages (holy crap, that song is hard).

I'm terrible at 'twitch' games (RTS, FPS) but pretty good at RPG and really good at 'puzzle' and 'exploration' games.

The exception to the above 'no-twitch' generality though, are racing games. For some reason, I can get into those and usually do really well.

Anything that requires agility or speed usually frustrates me, except for the racing games.

Against the trends in the industry, I'm still loyal to PC gaming. I hate gamepads- they make my hands hurt and frustrate me so much...

What can I say. I'm not, as you eloquently put it, "god's god's gift to gaming and pwn everyone", but I'm not too bad either. I've versed a friend in Halo 2 once, and while it was close, I won (supposedly, he's one of the better players in my gaming circle). Anyway, I'm pretty good at FPSs, and WRPGs, and can tolerate grind (to an extent), but suck at RTS. Yeah, that's about it.

I would consider myself decent at games. If I had to pick something that others consider me to be above average in, it's being the support class in role-based games or in MMOs. I can hang pretty well making sure offensive-minded players don't die and have no illusions regarding my role.

otherwise, as I said, I'm ok, but I'm not insanely good. The problem is, to be insanely good, you have to spend an insane amount of time getting good, and I just don't have that time.

I would've said good if it weren't for yesterday when I popped Red Dog in for a quick go and found I couldn't get past the first level.

Took me a while but I managed to figure out what sigs are. Thank you for your compliment. Perhaps I should change my sig on other forums to this. Its "I'm fat for a skinny guy but skinny for a fat guy" at the moment.

When it comes to FPS's, I can pick up and play pretty easy, I am really good at most if not all of the FPS's I have played. Games such as, COD4, Halo3, Vegas:2 I am God-Like. It's funny Il play with friends who don't play games often, and I get so irritated about how slow they are at learning the controls, or moving and such. But when it comes to RTS's as much as I want to believe I am the god of war, I can't seem to think on the largest of scales, I am decent at a game like C&C3, but with a game like Supreme Commander, I just can't seem to think on the same level as most of my opponents. Me and my dad are a prime example, at any FPS I will hands down curb stomp him into submission, but if we play BFME2, or SupCom, he will kick me as again and again and again.

I usually don't get ultra good at games because about and mid-way to really good I always without fail and stop to wonder. Why am i doing this? For Single-player game I usually respond to my own thought-question with"Because its fun!" But in the area where how good you are shows, Multiplayer, I tend to get frustrated by one to four problems that I have with the game and Resopnd to my thought-question"Actually I don't know why this isn't even fun!"

After That I take whatever game it was out of My Xbox360 or just go to my Xbox360 if it was on the computer and begin closing doors on corpses in Oblivion and remember how hilarious that is.

For the most part I'm Decent-kinda good mostly because the fun ends before I get good at it. Rpgs I can do competently because of my ability to prep my party for battles but I'm terrible at sports games, racing games, and RTSes. Probably because I hate the first two and never really play the third.Fpses I can do competently on normal and get the hang of MP pretty quick.

generally i can pick up any game from any platform and just set off, however in terms of becoming a master at that game, i dont give it enough time, in terms of playing online, i only play online a couple of times a week due to the sheer boredem under the sugar-coated competition, but i mainly concentrate on 3-4 games and finish most of them in a week or so and move on, i don't dig that whole achievement crap. However that being said give me a JRPG and everything will fall into place like clockwork +}

Yeah, I'm pretty good at gaming, I get the hang of a game in 15 minutes, but my weakness is Racing(Speed Freaks and CTR are fun, and they are highly playable)and Strategy (Except for AOE and Civilisation).

Wow we have your own resident 1337. If your aussie I wouldn't mind giving you a game.

Back on topic:

I find that I am pretty good at FPS as far as single player goes but in MP I'm all over the shop. Sometimes I'm on the top of the leaderboard with 20 more kills then everyone else, sometimes I'm placed around the middle.

I'm good at RPG's especially turnbased. Its like a game of chess.

I can usually beat Race sims on normal or hard but not the hardest. Same with Guitar Hero.

I suck a big stiffy at fighting games. I cannot play these games.

I am moderately good at games, I excel at RTS and Single-Player RPGs and am decent with FPSs, but all the other genres that I play I have to work up from the easiest to hardest, instead of hopping into Guitar Hero first time on Hard and playing Raining Blood, I work up from easy.

depends on the game i think. my 7 year old brother whoops my ass when i play Wii sports with him ("there's no way i swung through that, this game is crap!!!"), but on the flip side i have met very VERY few people who are on my level at CoD2 and CoD4 (i got screenies to prove it too lol...im pretty much a CoD2 god ^^). i am also pretty decent at guitar hero, and SSBB, although i could probably do better at that if i didnt use wario all the time to try and fart people off the level lol. i'd probably say i'm average to above-average at console games, and l33t when it comes to pc FPS games :) DONT HATE, APPRECIATE!

Well from my research there seems to be a few types of gamers.

Thinkers and processors - People who play games like Puzzles or RPGs that have no time limit and require either thinking of the right strategy or devoting time to move forward. (me) This can also include snipers and the like that stay out of trouble and calmly pick off people

Twitch - FPS gods at close range fast action.

Adrenalin - Do not have the reflexes of a Twitch player but are quite good at games involving fast paced (usually melee) action. These players tend to play games like God Of War, DMC and Arcade Fighters. Racing games also are included here.

Micro-managers - RTS players who have the speed to quickly undertake strategies they use (i respect people who can do this really well, South Koreans)

Pwners - "To truly pwn you must pwn at all games" said Teh Masterer and these are people who pick up any game and are great at it. The kind of friend who wants to play you in a game so they can raep you.

If there are more please add and if you hate my generalizations then shoot me. I take time and die often so it will not be hard.

I enjoy playing FPS games on 'normal'. The only one I played on Hard was Quake 4 because I felt it was too damn short. I played a custom Far Cry level which was set at "realistic" by default and got killed by the first patrol I came across about 25 times before I beat them. I do enjoy FPSes, but I'm strictly in 'casual gamer' territory when it comes to skill.

That's opposed to RTSes, where I'm usually somewhere in "your gran" territory. At any level higher than "easy" I get humped every time regardless of the game. Maybe that's a sign I should stick to platformers.

One game I've always been a wiz at is the "Point Blank" series of arcade shooters. I was robbed of the top score in Strathclyde University student union by hitting the empty treasure chest in the bonus round.

Tony Hawks 2. That is where my gaming skills peaked. I could rack up billions of points in two minutes.

But I consider myself to be pretty good generally. I'll come top in COD4 sometimes and I'm normally pretty high up and that's all I've been playing recently.

The only game i have been able to finish easily on hardest difficulty and pwn all my friends was Underground.

I'm pretty decent at RPGs, I used to be good at RTS's but haven't played any in quite a while so I can't say anymore. Suck at FPS's. Still have a lot of fun playing with friends, but I'm usually the one getting pwned, unless I retreat and hide with a sniper rifle. Anyone can dominate at least for a while with a sniper rifle.
