One or two people mentioned Croc? I own that game as well. LOVED it when I was younger, but I play it now and it's just far too repetitive. Ah, well.

Crash 3 still has my vote. Although Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey makes a very close runner-up.

I was never a Croc fan meself. The manual was pretty funny, and the game wan't bad, but Spyro did the same thing so much better.

Oh Spyro. It grieves me to see what they're done to you today...

Heart Of Darkness! I loved that game! I always loved the single screen style platformers but that was one of the best, up there with Another World imo. Castlevania:SOTN is awesome, played it recently through Xbox live. Crissaegrim ftw.

Another World is the best game of all time for me :)

Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear:Solid, and Resident Evil 2 for me. Between story, gameplay and graphics, nearly a perfect threesome. Only downfall would be the wonky camera for RE 2.

I have a few, all quite predictable.

The first game I ever got for the system was Tomb Raider 1, so that was my favourite platformer for the wow factor it had, and the nostalgia it still has.

Best fighter was Tekken 2 or 3, can't remember which, if only for the sheer man-hours me and a friend put into it.

Favourite adventure game was Resident Evil 1. I had never played anything like it before, and I got one of my first "OH SHIT!" scare moments in a game when you first encounter the frog-things (hunters?), with the POV-FMV of it running through the rooms you just came through and opening the door you only just closed behind you...

Favourite RPG was Final Fantasy 7. I know its hardcore fans have long since made this statement into more of an admission now, but at the time I played it I was totally unaware of the hype surrounding the game and had only picked it up because I wanted a new game and saw the box, read the back of it and liked the look of the screenshots.

Then came Metal Gear Solid. I didn't think I was going to like it because I thought Tenchu was a load of shite, but I was young and naive enough to think "all those reviewers can't be wrong" - so I bought it despite my misgivings. The cinematic presentation, the daft but involving story and the varied gameplay all combined to raise the bar in what I thought was possible in interactive entertainment. My friend who at the time was a "PC Gamer - consoles are shit" type was converted to the console way because of this game. (I have since gone over to the PC - funny how things turn out)

Jessiah:
Xenogears

I think I play RPG's for a different reason than a lot of people do. I play for the story. Xenogears, to me and most likely only me and two and a half other people, had some of the most riveting and heart wrenching stories I've ever seen in a game. For once I was exposed to an RPG where the characters actually grew up as the game went on. They came to realize that the world isn't as easy as "You're evil now die" and "I'm good because I'm supposed to be good." No no...when it starts they are all essentially "good" in their own ways and in their own eyes. But it's when they're contrasted with each other that they realize the world is sooooo much bigger than their internal struggles. Oop, the rambling stops NOW!

Oh wow thanks, I about to say FF:VII or Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete but then i saw your post Xenogears is one of the most breath taking games of it's time for me Anime and CG style cutscenes and deep characters an a few surpeizes along the way too!

I have to go with Final Fantasy Tactics. In my opinion it has the most mature (please note that when I say mature I mean well thought out and thought provoking, not boobies and blood) storyline of the Final Fantasy series. Even though the whole 'corrupt church' storyline's been done to death, raised, and then done to death again.

I first played command and conquer on the PS1, prompting me to buy it and, subsequently, red alert for the PC, so i'd have to go for that.
Though trying to play it with a D-Pad was a disgusting experience. =/

Other mentions go to FF7, Ghost in the Shell, Ridge Racer and Tekken 3 :)

1.Medieval,it will always be fun and always make me smile, sir dan is just awesome.
2.Syphon Filter(only the first one, minus the central park level, so frustrating)
3.STEEL REIGN, i think very few people ever played this game but it was an amazing tank warfare game and its very hard to find today anywhere.
4.Bushido Blade 2, so much fun to duel a friend one on one.
5.Final Fantasy VII obviously
6.Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
7.Metal Gear

The Colony wars series, but particularly Vengeance.

That game's still got the best explosions of any game ever made. Watching all those glowing cracks appear, then KABOOOOOOM!!!!! Your speakers have all pooped from the force of the noise...

The fact that its so bloody hard makes them all the sweeter.
What happened to space shooters anyway? I havn't seen a decent one in ages.

Also, Syphon Filter1 and 2
Metal Gear Solid
Red Alert
Crash Bandicoot Warped
Spyro 2 (so painfully cute... it should be a controlled substance)

Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX - The seventh was my first Final Fantasy, and probably the reason I got seriously hooked on videogames. FFVIII had some wonderful moments, and FFIX is a little jewel.
Metal Gear Solid - I thought I would hate it; I was so wrong. Kojima, you cunning demon.
Pandemonium - My first game for the PS1! Pure platforming fun.
Dead or Alive - Because I couldn't stand Tekken (I still really don't know why), and because it was fast and had COSTUMES XD
Spyro the Dragon - Wow, it was mentioned a lot! I used to play it with my brother for whole afternoons... good times. Such an adorable, imaginative and funny platformer.

Dino Crisis. It was the first game I played on PS1 and still my favorite. Sure, it may have been Resident Evil 2 with dinosaurs, but the plot wasn't bad, the scares felt natural, and the gameplay was just plain fun.

Valkyrie Profile, hands down. Challenging but never frustrating, packed to the hilt with secrets (Seraphic Gate!), fun battle system, and most importantly, a BRILLIANT story. Every single back-story for the Einherjar you recruit was absolutely heart-wrenching.

Resident Evil is a close second, if only because it was the very first PS1 game I ever played, and was the start of my continuing obsession with all things zombie-related.

So many games, so little time. From a quality perspective, the original Playstation was the greatest of all consoles. It had more quality titles than any system before or since without a doubt. I simply cannot choose a favorite game, instead, will list the great ones my genre.

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Road Rash
Tomb Raider
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil

Never had the PS1, but from games that have been ported to PC, Metal Gear Solid was awesome, and so was Heart of Darkness.
