You know the drill.

My favourite is the oft overlooked stealth genre. I like it cause I like being challenged mentally, having to work out how to get around an enemy without riddling them with holes. It can have some unfair moments, but these only serve to make it sweeter when I maneuver around them.

FPS to show off my tailent in killing people with finess and agility.
I like horror games too. It's fun to feel scared and helpless in a dark and evil senario. Enter Bioshock and Condemned. As soon as Condemned 2 comes out here, I'm playing it off the shelves.

J-rpgs, I love old linear story style.
Adventure games are a close second, for story again. :P

Sports games genre. I love how every sequel to these games brings a totally new experience to the table! With all those changes year to year, I'm amazed I can even recognize, much less play, my Maaaaadenz.

I'm rather a Jack of all trades, than a specialist at a few. I have 21 different genres installed on my comp right now, over 25 games.
I just play one for a while, then switch to the other, then back when I feel like it. Sometimes games get abandoned for quite some time (haven't played Oblivion for nearly 3 months now I think, hrm. Still need to finish that main quest -.-)

Always leaves me in the top3 at lanparties, but always losing to a specialist in the genre. It's fun though, to beat hardcore UT gamers when I myself haven't played the game in 10 months, heh.

But anyhoo, I just play games if they seem like fun to me. Mostly some degree of thought and tactics should be in it, though I occasionally enjoy mindless games as well. As long as it's fun.

Oh, and with 'thought and tactics', I mean puzzling, or awareness. Brothers in Arms forces you to think things through before you start the 4 F's strategy, especially in the second game. Rollercoaster Tycoon and Theme Hospital are fun to micromanage. The other people on campus were astonished the first time they saw me play it, and make huge profits whereas they had to wait months to make a decent profit.
Guitar Hero... well yeah, reflex party games.
UltraStar (SingStar for PC), I suck. But hey, it's fun when 9 people sing along with such a horrible song, especially when there's only 1 girl in the group that can actually sing well.
Final Fantasy VII, for the storyline. And oldskool gaming (it's 11 years old now I think? I only reinstalled 2 days ago, and reached the cross-dressing bit ^^)
Also used to play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 a lot, nowadays I play turn-based games on my DS in the form of Advance Wars

Of course, the pinnacle in tactics, for me, is the FPS. As long as it isn't instagib/one-weapon-only modded. Such games require quick thinking and knowledge of the maps. As well as reflexes. Changing guns mid-fight is so very underrated, people never see it coming when you change from a flak cannon to a shield gun. Makes them panic as you chase them around, until you get them in your crosshair. Splat. Once won a 10-way free-for-all, with only my shield gun. Friggin' hilarious since I faced nothing but miniguns, flak cannons and rocket launchers ^^

There are, however, genres I don't like that much.
Horror would be the main baddie here, since I'm a real scaredy cat. Didn't really find BioShock scary though. Silent Hill 2 however... I'm considering reinstalling that, but I fear that I'll be too scared to actually play it -.-
Racing games are meh. Needs to be multiplayer, to TrackMania Nations is alright for that. Singleplayer is often basically Barbie for your cars. Need for Speed stopped being fun after NFS III: Hot Pursuit.

Oh, but the genre I hate the most, is the pay-to-play MMO games. The game already costs full-price, and they ask you to pay 12 euro's on top of that, each friggin' MONTH? Playing it for the first year only already costs 200 euro's that way. You might as well buy 4-5 full-price games for the same amount, in different genres, even. Plus that awkward 'gotta play to make this game my money's worth'-addiction feel.

tl;dr: I play nearly everything, as long as it's fun, and p2p MMO developers should be crucified.

RPG's for sure. I don't care much to draw lines between Western and Japanese, I think they're both tools for telling stories and since I don't have the attention span to sit down and read books anymore I love being able to play through stories most people will never get to read.

I'm also a jack of all trades.

I really love those games you can play for a long time and then have to look at a calendar to see how much work you've missed(I've never missed any... much... it was an accident... OK I'm lucky I even still have a job... what day is it anyway?). But I also like the games you can just pick up and play for an hour with your friends. For those I usually crank the tunes and play mindlessly and hopefully win. Basically if I had to choose one I wouldn't be able to. It more or less depends on if I feel like thinking or not. Or even if I want human interaction or if I need my space. Which being an emotionless fiend I generally don't care if I have to talk to someone or not.

But my favorite game series would be the Super Smash Brothers series. Say what you want about Nintendo or their games, I will always love that series. It's the one game that has both been a pick up and go game as well as a weekend stealer... seriously I have to find a calendar soon. And if you disagree you've been playing to much Pong, grandpa.

I like alot of games for different reasons.

FPS: The good ol' fashion joy of killin'!

Stealth: Being a shadow, a ghost, the perfect assassin. Not noticed until you are long gone.

RPG: You train and grow. As you learn you gain more power, money and respect (or fear, muahahahaha).

Xtreme Sports: High speed, High risk, adrenaline making fun. Board, bike or blade, it's always a thrill.

Platformer: Get to the end of the level with all these traps in your way. Why? FOR THE LULZ!

Pretty awesome in general. ;D

I love FPSs because it lets me point and click kill things with guns I doubt I'll ever be allowed to have.

I love RTS games because of the base building, ones like Company of Heroes disgust me because there's no bases.

RPGs are all about the cool gear and infinite options for equipping you dudes. Variety, very nice!

Turn-Based Strategy Space games (MOO2, GalCiv) I love for the long research trees and being able to design your own ships.

Turn-Based Strategy Squad games (XCom, UFO:E) I love for the chess-like strategy and awesome weapons to research.

Turn-Based Strategy Wargames (BattleIsle, Advance Wars) I like the simplicity of, and the ability to play these with minimal attention so annoyances (phone, family) don't cost me a victory.

Mecha Simulations (Mechwarrior, Earth Siege, Heavy Gear)... DUDE! Mechs!

My top 3 are:

FPSs: Duh, really, but if it's done correctly, i like the feeling that i'm saving the world or shooting a guy in the head online from 100yds away with an assault rifle in my eyes.

Music/Rythm: If it has songs i like, or types of songs i like, they are really fun for me I.E Elite Beat Agents

Stealth: Shooting the enemy in the head with a silencer without him knowing where the hell the shot came from is just so satisfying.

Need to play more RPGs though.

I don't know. I always just buy the best reviewed games of all genres on a seven-day return and return them if I get bored before the seven days.

But one of the best games I ver played was Total Overdose.

I like games from all genres, except for Sports games. I'm not a sporty guy, but I'd actually rather play the sport than a simulation of it : P

RPG's and Strategy games. I like story and character development, I also like building things into finely honed machines of conquest and destruction.

I'm very much like Saphatorael. I'm very good at a very wide range of genres. I'm never as good as a true hardcore expert of genres, let alone specific games. But I very rapidly climb to near the top at whatever games I attempt.

As for what genres I LIKE, and why...

FPS: For shooting people in the goddamned face. Why else?

Strategy: For feeling like an evil overlord when I pull a plan off flawlessly. (Try to avoid a soft manic laugh. Just try.)

WRPG: The freedom.

JRPG: The story.

Platformers: For the tight controls, constant action, difficulty and pure nostalgia.

Horror: Hey, I love a good scare.

My wife's turn.
JRPGs: The immersion factor.
Strategy: Just to see how well you can do.
Simulation games (The Sims, Harvest Moon, etc.): They're just so much fun, you can play them for hours and find out so many things.
Classic games: Nostalgia.

Hmm, a bit difficult to explain my genre choices.

FPS: Probably the same as RPG's.

RTS's: Because of the nearly limitless strategies you can make.

RPG's: I like to murder stuff?

RTS: tis fun to know you won by outwitting something specifically programmed for strategy or to beat a player...and also coz tank rushes look epic
FPS: to quote fps doug, "my hands are shaking!" cant beat the adrenaline (god i sound nerdy) in a good xbox live match

Id write more but i cannot be arsed since its 1:30am hehe

Hate FPS's for some reason, not ALL of them, specific's I like.
I'm into the free-roaming genre like GTA, True Crime or Scarface!

Action Adventure: I always like the idea of journeying into new and unknown worlds while being able to smash your way through enemies. For example, God of War have amazing adrenaline rush combat with strategy involved. You can also level up skills and solve clever puzzles in some very nice looking environments.

RTS: Not as much as AA but still, I just love building armies and using elements of militant strategy to raid the enemy.

I like tactical shooters, 'cos I like the slower pace (though I am a bit of a twitchy), as well as the joy you get when you flank those pesky enemies.

And I wonder why some people who would put this do become the president. Here I'm also referring to Nixon and John McCain.
