Gone Gonzo Posts: 4828 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | Here's where my point of view differs from a lot of yours. See, I see this game as being marketed primarily towards headbangers. Thus, Mass appeal of Jack Black is irrelevant. I see it as a game made for headbangers, by headbangers (Maybe even from headbangers, but lets not go there). Its a gutsy move, actually going into niche marketing, but it could pay off. The visuals, the soundtrack, the characters, the humour, it all sounds like its made just for us. Schafer has shown that profit is not what motivates him, and this seems likely. Please feel free to show me things that indicate that this is not true, but from everything I've seen (except for Jack Black) this game is not supposed to appeal to everyone, but to make every headbangers rabidly pursue it. By making a guaranteed market niche as opposed to a huge possible market, he can be relatively certain of making some profit, and is thus safe to make the game good. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 4828 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | And I guess you want Green Day too? I won't begrudge you it. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 107 Joined: 24 May 2008 | naw greenday arent the right genre. greenday are a good band but not good enough to be lined up with moterhead and dio! |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4828 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | Exactly. Thats the same problem with Tenacious D. Thats what I've been saying! |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 4828 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | Psychonauts did, so I wouldn't say you're that bad off. But if you try to put James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine on the same disc, the hostility will cause the disc to disintergrate and explode in your disc drive (even if you're not playing it on the 360). As it is, as Dave invented Thrash metal, he'd take precedence. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3224 Joined: 24 Apr 2008 | It has Dio and JB it may be my favorite ever game already. |

Tenacious D is worthy... Have you not seen their devotion to 'The Metal?' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0T4ljMHYXE This sums everything up nicely. |

SACRALIDGE!! Thinking that someone can be too old to be Metal. |
Beat Writer Posts: 223 Joined: 23 Apr 2008 | I hope it will be awesome, but I'm kind of tired with it getting delayed. But then again, if it came out this fall, I wouldn't be able to afford it, so... I'll give it the benifit of the doubt so long as it comes out by April next year. |

the guy is a comedic actor, the term "sellout" doesn't even have any relevance to Jack Black. he was never some "indie-actor" who did introspective thought provoking indy roles but who then caved and did action movies. and even then, do you call Paul Giammatti a sellout for being in Shoot Em Up? he was a comedic performer who moved from musical penis jokes to voice acting a Panda in a Disney movie. the guy had nothing to "sell out" in the first place. |

He was alright in Be Kind, Rewind, but he's definitely not Metal enough to be in this game. It'd be like puttinf Osama Bin Laden in a Fifa game. Yes, he's a soccer player, but he's not exactly on par with others. |

I don't think "Metal Enough" is really the idea here. Do we really want to drag in Dave Mustaine so he can deliver his campy on the nose anti-cliches? The role is more about finding a funny voice actor who is familiar enough with the conventions of Heavy Metal to be able to add something to the dialogue. The Metal being conveyed in the game isn't Swedish Black Metal or anything modern, it's basically everything from Iron Maiden to King Diamond, a gap that i'm sure Jack Black is more than familiar with. |

I'm pretty sure there are gonna be some form of Metalcore or Black Metal allusions (Hence why its called Brutal Legend and not Metal Legends), possibly on the scale of just one level for each. I have this feeling its going to be similar to Psychonauts, and have themed levels - a Glam level, a Thrash level, a NWOBHM level, a Black Metal Level, a Metalcore level, etcetera. They've already announced the Goth level. |

Amen. Jack Black is a brilliant comedy actor, with a good awareness of the classic heavy metal scene. Plus his voice is easily recognisable. I think he's a great choice for the lead. Although I doubt they'll venture into more extreme forms of metal, I think Jack Black could pull it off anyway. |

You know, there could be a Dethklok game in the works. If so, then...well, you can finish that sentance yourself, can't you? |

i really doubt all of that. Nordic references in heavy rock have been around since Led Zeppelin and the main roadie character looks more like Glenn Danzig than a long haired Swede. it seems that you are thinking more in the vein of Metalpocalypse which is not where i think this game is going. |

Not likely. Adult Swims games are usually handled by Williams Street games, and while their we based games show some definite promise (go and try Amateur surgeon and judge for yourself), I doubt they would try to make a Metalocalypse game |

You doubt the game is gonna go into the level based system? Why? I'm not saying its going to be the games focus, just it will be an equal part of the game. |

no, i doubt the game will reference the type of metal you are referring to. i have no idea how the levels will be designed. Tim Schafer is a bit older than even me. So i can't see him being fully abreast of the state of the modern metal scenes. his imagery seems more referencial of early death metal, hard rock, and yes even Tenacious D. |

Black Metal is not exactly new, its earlier forms could be found in the 80's, and it took a serious hold in Norway in the 90's (Globalisation in action, eh?). Its older than Tenacious D, so if he's aware of Tenacious D, he'd be aware of Norways biggest cultural export. |

if knowledgable information worked in a linear progressive fashion, then yes you would be right. however, his referencial depth is probably deeper than a casual metal listener but more ingrained in classic metal rather than modern iterations. and Tenacious D has mainstream appeal, so Tim could know about them but not know anything about In Flames. i'm not holding my breath for any comedic references to "Mayhem". |

Good fucking burning ass heavens I'm not talking about a Williams Street crapfest. I'm talking about an actual game tie-in from...well, someone who isn't in it to see how "funny" they can be while making another "he he he, this'll piss off a lot of uncool people because they don't get it" self serving piece of crap. If Metalocalypse can gain enough fans to have an actual tour, it is entirely possible that it can spawn it's own game. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4828 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | Alright, back up. Do you think they are likely to divide the game into areas based upon to Metal subgenres? |
Beat Writer Posts: 146 Joined: 3 Jun 2008 | Hmm, I´m not a Metalhead at all (that genre kinda died for me when I first heard Kyuss), but I´m pretty psyched about this game. It has axes, Tim Schafer, Blood, Jack Black, motorcycles, Tim Schafer and ehm Tim Schafer. That´s reason enough to be thrilled. And there won´t be just metal in there. Wolfmother for example. |

any game with jack black as the main character is instantly credited as awesome in my books!
