Red Guard Posts: 2000 Joined: 16 Dec 2007 | What a fanboy inducing thread this has turned out to be. Who'd-a-thunk-it, someone demanding that Xbox users justify their purchase of the console. I didn't see that one coming. I remember when kids used to argue which console had a better cartoon mascot. Now you have the internet, and it's really a lot harder to give someone a bloody nose if they piss you off. Though I certainly have wished I could. What are you going to do? It's all about what you want. If you want a game system that sounds like a microwave, and puts off the same amount of heat, go buy an Xbox. If you want an expensive Blu-ray player that looks good with your other expensive audio equipment Ps3 is for you. If you want to pause "Brawl" so you can good crotch shots of Peach and Zelda, then you need a Wii (and therapy). |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 925 Joined: 25 Jan 2008 | The Xbox 360 is the PS2 of this generation of consoles, it has the widest range of quality games (despite an over-abundance of shooters) that rely on a classical control method to be played. Sure a lot of the games for Xbox get ported to PC, but that doesn't make them any less great. The games catalogue for the Xbox 360 shows up a whole load of quality: Halo 3 (Like it or not, it's still a well made, quality title.) ... and the list goes on. Despite the fact that many of these games aren't xbox exclusives doesn't stop them from being fantastic games (most of which work well online too.) It's all a matter of taste, but imo the xbox is the best all-round console of this generation. It's not a console masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it does what it sets out to do very well. |

Complete the set of four? Anywho, I reckon all three of the current-gen consoles are worth owning, and I don't reckon any is particularly superior to any other. All of them have their good and bad points. as with pretty much everything else ever made or thought up by the human race. I certainly can't understand why people are as prejudiced as they are against the 360. Okay, so it's loud and hot and has a few hardware issues, but there are some excellent games for it, and a huge number of fellow users to play against. The Playstation 3 is in theory the most powerful piece of gaming hardware out there, but the tiny game library makes it difficult to justify buying right now (in my opinion) and as face-achingly fun as the Wii is, I can't get over the feeling that it's a little... gimmicky as it stands right now, and that there are vast untapped fields of potential there that need to be explored. Preferably by people who WON'T just turn out endless Mario, Metroid and Zelda sequels. (although Metroid Prime 3 rules, I will allow) Good points, bad points. You shouldn't need convincing - they're all FUN. |

There's only one game that the PS3 can offer that the 360 has no rival for, MGS4. It's the only reason that I've got a PS3 and from the other PS3 exclusives that I've played, only a few have impressed me and those all have an equal on the 360. So I guess the 360 has the most amount of choice and the most amount of options available, nothing mind blowing, just a bit of freedom. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 391 Joined: 31 Oct 2007 | Ok people have missed a very important part of the argument the Microsoft x-box 360 is made by Microsoft, yea thats right Microsoft who have been making operating systems for over 20 years and though computers have got many hundreds of times more powerful it takes them longer than ever to boot up. The fact that the original windows was shamelessly ripped off from another young company at the time (and one I also have little love for due to their DRM) yes none other than Apple. The fact that they spend a small fortune trying to assure companies make games exclusively for their consoles helping to stifle cross platform development (and made other manufacturers follow suit). The fact that any new OS they release you know it's not going to be worth touching until its had at least 2 service packs released. The fact that every 360 owner I know has had at least one console die of the RROD Then there's the fact that they have been chastised in just about every court in the world over their dodgy business practises. Personally I have played on my brother 360 and enjoyed it a lot however because it's a Microsoft x-box and because of the red ringing issues I could never respect it. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 5 Joined: 15 Apr 2008 | I know that outing yourself as a fan of sports games is usually a direct invocation of Godwin's law on gaming boards, but if you're looking for a 360 game to really dazzle, check out Skate by EA's Black Box. I know it's also available on PS3, and so it doesn't justify buying an Xbox 360 if you already have Sony's device, but playing it for the first time about 6 months ago justified every penny I spent on my console. The visuals, camera angle, controls.. just about everything about Skate was so immersive that it took me right back to having a skateboard of my own in my early teens. I think the last game that made me feel as strongly was Final Fantasy VII, or maybe the original Half-Life. I think the problem with most games now is that it's all so derivative. Producing a game like Halo or Bioshock is an expensive thing to do, without question, and so to cut costs it seems like every shooter uses the Unreal Engine, and so everything feels kinda similar, albeit with the occasional new feature that impresses. The PS2 similarly used RenderWARE for everything from Grand Theft Auto to Pro Evolution Soccer, so actually this is a problem that stems back to before Microsoft came into the console market. I guess the point I'm labouring here is that game design now is not about squeezing every last clock cycle out of the hardware (Crysis is hardly £1000 worth of hardware better than HL2). Instead it is moments of ingenuity like Skate's control system, or Portal's core mechanic and stellar script-writing, or Mass Effect's conversation system that raise the bar a little higher each time. If you've lived long enough to witness Contra, Goldeneye, Half-Life and it's sequel, and finally onto Call of Duty 4, you'll know the song remains the same, and the 360 is no worse than Playstation 2 or most that came before. |

Muckraker Posts: 245 Joined: 26 Mar 2008 | Drong, I fail to see how the fact that the Xbox is made by Microsoft in any way affects the quality of the console itself. The bad practices of a company should NEVER be used to try and reflect upon the quality of products. I'm not sure which logical fallacy this is - I think it's the Straw Man - but it's still a mistake to automatically assume that just because the company is bad, so is the console they produce. Sure, Microsoft may be everything you just described, but that in no way affects the amount of enjoyment I can get from playing games on my XBox 360. For starters, the vast bulk of the games available for that thing weren't actually created by Microsoft, they were created by other companies. |
Beat Writer Posts: 126 Joined: 19 Mar 2008 | everything thats on the PS3 is also on the 360 except for like 4 mediocre games, and the online sevice blows. In my opinion the only thing PS3 has going for it is blue ray and Metal Gear Which I guess will be reason enough for me to get one in June. and in 2075 when Final Fantasy 13 comes out that will be good too. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 57 Joined: 16 Oct 2007 | A couple of points. 1. An important factor in the 360 gaining your 'respect' is it is clearly a lot easier to develop titles for than the ps3. Rockstar pretty much said that the reason GTA was delayed was because of the difficulty of making it for the ps3. Third party developers don't want to spend oodles of money developing for a console just because it's more powerful than the competitor. 2. The idea that the story in JRPGs is somehow 'better' than the story in shooters is a little elitist. Just because theres a lot of depth does not mean it is engaging or well written. Personally I couldn't get into FF7 or indeed Lost Odyssey because it simply wasn't very clear or well written. On the other hand, the storyline to COD4, while it wasn't exactly Proust, was fun, engaging and punchy. It made you care about the main characters and didn't resort to snooty pseudo-anime stereotypes. And look no further for what i think is the best story on the market these days: the half life series, a series that has done new and interesting things with the concept of shooters. 3. I don't even use Xbox Live and yet I am impressed by Microsoft's canny approach to online gaming. Yes, you do have to pay for it but it is also nicely streamlined and works, on the whole, exceptionally well. 4. At the end of the day, the 360 has sold a lot more units than its direct competitor, and that is worthy of respect in any case. |

What makes you think you're so utterly fantastic that a console has to prove itself to you to be any good? You don't like it? Fine. Go buy something else, don't bitch about how other people like something you can't see the merits of. That happens sometimes, you know. |
Muckraker Posts: 245 Joined: 26 Mar 2008 | y'know, it occurs to me to ask the OP: "Have you EVER taken a risk on buying a game that looks cool but you don't know that much about"? Because seriously, it sounds like you rely on other people showing you these games in action before you'll even try them out. Where's your sense of adventure? |
Paperboy Posts: 23 Joined: 9 Nov 2006 | Some of you people are rediculous, and this is coming from a long time PC elitist. I got myself a 360 and a wii because that was the same price as a PS3 or thereabouts. One difference though: I did not expect my 360 to descend from the clouds as the answer to my every prayer on the gaming front. The fact that its a Microsoft product makes no difference to me. I bought a system wanting something to play games with, and this is really just a very expensive toy like many others. The controller layout is comfortable and adaquate, and tanslates well into a wide variety of games. The dashboard OS is slick and user friendly, easy to navigate for the most part. The online aspect is good, with downloadable content for any game I would want more of, and arcade titles that range from impressive to decidely unimpressive. Most of my friends have 360's and we can quickly setup a multiplayer match and have some fun and voice chat instantly. I dont play public matches really so for the most part im insulated from the asshatery of this so called "player base"(which describes every aspect of life mind you. The people with the most publicity are the ones who can say the stupidest thing louder than anyone else). I dont "respect" a chunk of plastic and circuits sitting on my entertainment center. I have a degree of admiration for some game developers who come up with fun games for me to play. And im content with my console purchases in sofar as they have entertained me as much as ive needed them to. No, it wasnt the second coming of Jesus. No, it cant do RTS games like my PC can, and it wont be on the cutting edge of graphics come 2 years from now where my PC will with upgrades. I also know that any box I pickup that says "xbox360" will play, and I wont have to read the system reqs and upgrade next year for the new titles(exaggeration I know, but only a small one). New topic: what will it take for me to respect my new toaster. Im unimpressed with toaster 2.0, but toaster 1.8 was awesome. |

You seem to be judging the console based on the games developed for it, that not really fair. You can complain that the games developers are unoriginal but flaming the xbox becausce it hasn't got any games you like is a bit... nvm. My point is that you should judge hardware (the xbox) on its performance and reliabiltiy, not on what software (the games) is made for it. |

I think saying that about the 360 is a bit narrow-minded, but you're saying that about the original Xbox--to quote someone else, that statement is so narrow-minded it "can see through a keyhole with both eyes." The Xbox had the best version of Phantasy Star Online, Ninja Gaiden, Crimson Skies, Stranger's Wrath, and Shenmue II to name a few. Shenmue II should be enough for anybody to "respect" the Xbox--no game made since then has been better. |

Nah but, I mean Morrowind was a massive game, and that was released on the Xbox. I guess it just comes down to how highly you value things like high definition or whatever. Where do they go from here though? Will the PS4000 (the next gen Playstation: see Sim City) just have another graphics boost? Its getting pretty hard to fathom something bigger or with more incredible scenery then Oblivion, haha. But then, thats what my Aunty said the first time she played Mario Kart 64.
LOOY, thats like saying "Dont judge this newspaper on the quality of its articles, or the value of its pictures, or the amount of adverts." |

To Apone: Most of the people who play FPS' on the 360 are retarded (what they ALL have downsyndrome or something) but your not. Yeah whatever mate! To: Indigo-Dingo: You want the 360 to WoW (notice how that is spelt) you so you can give it "respect". Well what is it exactly that WoW's you, according to your original post its resistance fall of man, the most band and run of the mill of shooter I can think of (yes it tops halo). Honestly I think this WoW idea of yours is just to come in here and attack 360 fanbuys by claiming that all the games are crap. Atleast most trolls have the common respect to not beat around the bush and say how they fell about the 360 instead of all this "lack of respect" bollocks. Honestly, to me this is a "Da 360 is shit so i don't respect it, I like da PS3/Wii for [insert X reason here] thats right your retarded you fan boys" argument. Please for the love of god do not make another one of these, ever. |
Beat Writer Posts: 169 Joined: 27 Sep 2007 | You want me to convince you of just how great the 360 is? Well, put on your man-diaper, because your about to wet yourself with amazement. If your 360 doesn't like you it summons it's Lord and Master Satan to glare at you, thus turning the rings on the front red and rendering your 360 incapable of playing games again until an excorcist is called in to drive Satan from it. Not impressed yet? It also has custom face plates. Consider yourself pwned, my friend. Edit: And just so as to make myself totally clear, I am saying that the RROD is actually the Eye of Satan, staring at you from the depths of your multi-hundred dollar machine, feeding on your hate and sorrow. |

Muckraker Posts: 237 Joined: 22 Jan 2008 | i say fuck you to anyone who uses the phrase "console-tards" and that fuck you goes double for anyone who has ever said "fps-tards". I will admit the 360 has an abundance of fps right now but some of them are really fun, note, FUN not nesisarily "genre redifining goodness" but fun, and thats good enough because really groundbreaking gameing takes time to develop. so to fill the time gap fun can be played over and over again. i find myself re-purchasing my older games for the 360 in the shit months when nothing comes out so i stopped trading in. but if you want a reason to own a 360 that is not fps i can name quite a few games that are worth their purchase price escpecially now that time has passed and the price has dropped -saints row i mean these are just a few games i found to be really fun and worth the time to play. some of these are available in other formats but hey you go for what you enjoy and this list makes my 360 a great purchase for me, may not entertain everyone but it certainly isnt just for "20ish idiots with spare cash" |
Copy Clerk Posts: 53 Joined: 9 Apr 2008 | What the fuck I am getting really pissed off I keep running into people who treat me like some motherfucking social pariah who is less than dirt because I own a 360 ans play shooters so now owning a 360 OR playing an FPS in the last 10 years of my life somehow makes me a ritalin popping retard oh and to anyone who says that 360 ONLY has shooter playing retards I'm sorry but I don't remember Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion or Mass Effect being an FPS with a shitty story line and poor dialog in fact I remember it as being quite the opposite. To any fan of the PS3 what the fuck happened to the little game killzone 2 it seems that while it was used to tout PS3's superiority it was how do I say this NEVER MOVED PAST A MOTHERFUCKING TRAILER and killzone 1 sucked anyway so what are you getting excited about but I will concede this you actually moved all your elitist support behind MGS4 an actually GOOD game. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 9 Joined: 20 Mar 2008 | I own a 360 and a Wii. I don't own a PS3 yet, because it was a little pricey at the time, and I'm waiting for a FUN looking game to come out on it. I've been around the block quite a few times. From the Power Glove (it's so bad) to the Wii Zapper. This generation of consoles has struck me as a series of quirky opponents. Everyone has its own target audience and everyone has it's own ghastly problem with it. The problem rests not with the 360 or the Wii or the PS3. It rests with the fan boys. The game lineups ports aside are very unique. Sony has a wonderful set of games I would love to have the option of playing, and so does the Xbox and Wii. As it just so happens I find Xbox games generic and repetitive, but you know what? On a Monday night after a rough day, sometimes exploring the world of Cyrodiil is how I chill out. Sometimes I have the need to get rid of some excess energy and severely chaff my forearms so I'll play Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Maybe it's just me, but the second I have to strap a Microsoft brand bomb to my body and But I've been too nice. *looks around* Oh yah, FPS'? They maybe offer the possibility of being strategic, but don't tell me they're going to start marketing that as the next hooked on phonics. You want to think? Go buy a DS or emulate it or whatever it is you kids are doing these days and play some Brain Age. It's good for yah. |

We should define both quality and crap, as the only game I 'kinda' want to play that is on the 360 is Lost Odyssey... and even that is a game I'm not really interested in. It's very weird. All of the console only games this gen are pretty bad. The only ones that have genuinely taken me away from my PC is Smash Bros, Rock Band, and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. I'm really waiting for SF4, the new Tekken, Soul Calibur 4, and Afrika, but all of those don't really compare to games like Warhammer Online, Starcraft 2, and Spore... at least for me. |
I agree their are a lot of people who think their on a higher plane or something because their system/game type is better.
And while I love a good puzzle or RPG, there's nothing I like more than chatting with a few nice people over the internet about tactics and where the positions are of the enemies we're about to destroy.
Anyone else can go do whatever pleases them.
This includes choice of system to play on. If you like one over the other, good. That helps you decide which one to buy; enjoy it and keep the flame bait to yourself.
