That just highlights the high quality of writing in Portal. You're 100% correct, the weighted companion cube has no personality whatsoever, but through GLaDOS's dialogue, it appears to have a personality. The lines about the WCC are some of my favourite lines in the whole game. |

Master Chief has some of the most quotable lines in all of videogamedom. "Sir, permission to leave the ship" "For what purpose Master Chief?" "To give the Covenant their bomb back." -------------------- Anyways, I'll no doubt get flamed for this, but Cortana actually had a very good personality. Sassy, smart, and she always had some wise-crack to make about the many situations MC found himself in. |

yeah and how can you forget the quote he made on the planet Breach (the book) lady: "but chief, how will we find you?" also i liked the personality of the fat blue book brother guy from the original Myst (the name escapes me) |

Sir, Yes Sir! Anyhoo, I really like Guybrush Threepwood, with all his little neurosis and silly quips, I really wish someone would make a new Monkey Island. |

Paperboy Posts: 41 Joined: 9 Jan 2008 | GLaDOS is funny but SHODAN is just plain creepy. Still one character that I find undeniably compelling is Saveedro from Myst III: EXILE. When I think of others I'll come back and edit my post to add them |

He is the electronic embodiment of me ;-) I also like Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell but mainly because of Michael Ironside's voice work. |

In CoD1, he was a guide to your life in Europe. In CoD2, he was the hard-hitting leader on the battlefield. In 4, he was the House-esque character who always hated you, except he liked you a bit. |

I concur. Although it was Fontane's voice acting which made me buy the game. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 354 Joined: 6 Feb 2008 | I have to go with HK-47, the single best-written character I have ever seen in a movie, book, or game. Runner-up has to be Andrew Ryan. Having read Ayn Rand's work and being fond of her philosophies myself, it was cool on a level I can't describe to see them come to life in a video game. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1918 Joined: 18 Sep 2007 | Durandal, the rampant AI you work for in the Marathon series. (See userpic.) "If things aren't working around here, it's because I'm laughing too hard." "It seems that BoBs aren't lava-proof." "You know the guy; angry AI, works for the Pfhor, name rhymes with 'psycho'..." There's been lots of strong personalities in games, but I have to say that it's Durandal I rank as the very best. -- Steve |

Also I would like to vote for Alyx Vance and Dr. Magnusson. Ps. "Mother" from PREY, just to name a bad guy... |
Beat Writer Posts: 169 Joined: 9 Apr 2008 | i would say travis touchdown from no more heroes. Despite being at times a very repellent human being (well he is meant to represent a stereotypical gamer) he has so some of the best lines I've heard in a while, hell his entrance to the game is brilliant. How can you not love a guy whos first word, upon dispatching two henchmen in a very cool way is 'fuckheads!. As you can tell, i love No More Heroes :) |

I'm sure this thread already exists somewhere here, but let's go ahead with it anyway. If this thread has a great enough level of success. I'll make a deathmatch thread, with a poll of the most popular in this thread.
List the characters in any video game that you consider to be overflowing with the thickest, and greatest personalities you have seen. Note, this does not mean that you have to like them. You could hate their guts, but for good reason.
1: GLaDOS* (Portal): I think we can all agree here.
2: Jim Raynor (Starcraft)
3: Dr. Steinman (Bioshock)
4: The G-Man (Half Life series)
5: Teron Gorefiend (Warcraft IIx: Beyond the Dark Portal)
*GLaDOS includes the Companion Cube and the Autoturret, as they scratch their personality from GLaDOS's rich surface.
As a bonus, I'll include some of the worst:
Master Chief, and Saladin and Montezuma from Civ4.
