Gone Gonzo Posts: 1556 Joined: 5 Dec 2007 | Guitar Hero III had possibly the most boring soundtrack to a rythm game ever. While Rock Band had lots of good music. But why do they insist on playing the bad Radiohead songs instead of the good ones? |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 772 Joined: 1 Jan 2008 | Guitar Hero.Rock Band is waaay to expensive.I do not care how good it is, because for £200 I could have a second-hand PS3 instead. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 8 Joined: 17 Dec 2006 | Guitar Hero 3 wasn't bad, just more of the same. I don't own Rock Band as of yet, but plan to change that soon. Guitar Hero has jumped the shark, in my opinion, and I am going to pass on Guitar Hero 4 unless it brings some fun new things to the table. I sure as hell am not going to pay full price for the Aerosmith version...and I like Aerosmith. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3849 Joined: 29 Nov 2007 | Rock Band. Guitar Hero was bland lies and needless difficulty. |
News Room Contributor Posts: 1876 Joined: 21 Feb 2008 | I live in the UK, so I haven't played Rock Band yet. I bet it will still be better than Guitar Hero 3 |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 854 Joined: 22 Aug 2006 | Rock Band is amazing, and I thought I could simply live without Guitar Hero this go'round. Circumstance conspired to force me into a Guitar Hero purchase, and now I KNOW I could've lived without it. Neversoft didn't do a very good job. From the interface, to the sound mixing (the sound of "messing up" is always twice as loud as the note you were trying to play), to the persistent, distracting popups saying 50 NOTE STREAK! I need to get better at screwing up every 20 notes so it'll shut up about them. (If there are options for adjusting some of these items, I wasn't enticed enough to try and fix said issues in order to get any further. I played through the first 6 tiers on Expert, hit the "wall" at Tier 7, and said "fuggedaboutit".) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1104 Joined: 6 Mar 2008 | Definitely Rock Band. Being able to create your own character, choosing guitar or singing or drums, you just can't compare. The venues aren't quite as good, but you barely pay attention to that anyway. The song list in GHIII was a little better as well, but it's possible to change that with the dlc. The characters and animation for RB are incredible. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 75 Joined: 7 Jan 2008 | Guitar hero 3. The guitar play is millions better than the one in rock band, and the songs are alot better as well. Hammering on and pulling off is fun. Activision screwed the whole thing up with the 7th tier wall and terrible battle mode, but the core of it is very fun. Rock band i couldnt get into, because the songs were mediocre and the instruments frequently had hardware problems. |

It's odd because I find it to be the exact opposite. The biggest culprit, though, are the charts. I don't even know where to begin with how they tossed in notes that were completely irrelevant and/or didn't match what was being played. The song list, I felt, didn't flow well. Oh cool, Cliffs of Dover in between Slayer and Maiden? Woo, Eric Johnson sure gets me in the mood for metal. This has been a problem in all Guitar Hero games, though. |
Muckraker Posts: 236 Joined: 6 Dec 2007 | Clearly Rock Band was the next evolutionary step in this particular genre of games, so I'd have to give the nod to it. Unless Guitar Hero innovates some features into their releases they're going to become nothing more than the same gameplay with different songlists slapped onto it. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 82 Joined: 21 Feb 2008 | I thought GH3 had some good stuff, and some bad stuff, like usual. |

Rock Band has hammer ons/offs. You must have been playing with the earlier stuff, if you sent your things in they would send them back and usually gave you a free game for your problems. I got .skate from having a screwed up guitar. Rock Band has plenty more songs than Guitar Hero and most of them are far better than it as well. Not to mention, their downloadable content doesn't suck. Not to mention, their hardest song isn't one long ass song that isn't constant hammer ons and isn't really that hard to play in real life. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 60 Joined: 9 Mar 2008 | I've "recently" (a month ago" imported Rock Band and I simply have to say: It is way better than GH3, at least on the PS3. Next up: Rock Band. Singstar + Guitar Hero and a Drum Controller added. Single-player campaign equals that of Guitar Hero: play songs one after another, grouped in "tiers" (cities), until you finish. Simple, somewhat fun. Good for practice. But Rock Band clearly shows that the focus is put onto multi-player: The campaign (Rock Band world tour) removes the strict "tier" structure. Instead, you choose in what venue in which city you want to play and after you got your manager you can "ask" that guy where you need to be more present in order to advance (by getting roadies, a tour bus, a jet and so on). While character customisation is more of a "meh" thing in single-player, it oddly becomes fun in multi-player (don't ask me how). The price tag is hefty, but if you got friends that visit your place quite regularly you could ask them for "donations" for buying the game. We did that here and I don't regret it. Although I suggest choosing your less materialistic friends for such an endeavour. ;) |
Muckraker Posts: 272 Joined: 5 Feb 2008 | How can the two even be compared? Guitar hero is a static experience, while Rock band keeps diversifying itself as time goes on. We'ven seen the addition of a music store, and way more downloadable content than I thought would ever be released. Screaming for Vengeneance(The entire album) is being released this Tuesday. GH: Aerosmith eat your heart out. |
Muckraker Posts: 250 Joined: 11 Dec 2007 | I own GH3, but i find that the song list is a big piece of garbage. Playing rock band for the first time last weekend has shown me how a band game should be done. The songs are okay, at least better than GH3's, and the difficulty isn't retarded. Not to mention, being a drummer gets you more chicks than being a guitarist :S. I will definitely convert to rock band if and when it comes out for the Wii, but will most likely also get the future GH3 games as well. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 6546 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | Guitar Hero III was awful for the following reasons - Just plain ugly and wrong character designs (Making Izzy look like a transvestite, Johny Look like Voldemort and Judy look like a $5 whore), ugly-looking stage designs, stupid character additions, trying to have a plot and failing miserably, a track list that really sold out, a difficulty curve that jumps between easy street and traversing the street of broken syringes on your hands and knees, and a mode thats idiotic, both in the context of the game and outside of it. Taking all this away, this leaves nothing they did right. By Contrast, there is no wrong within Rock Band. The setlist is pure gold, and the dlc is turning platinum. The only thinbg wrong with it is its still not FUCKING OUT IN AUSTRALIA YET, YOU STUPID FUCKING DISTRIBUTORS!!!! I'm amazed that anyone voted for Guitar Hero III. While it does win in price, thats like saying that a PC is inferior to a pocket calculator for the same reason. |
Paperboy Posts: 42 Joined: 26 Jan 2008 | How do you even compare the two, Rockband has 4 different instruments for 4 players, the song list is fantastic, it doesn't suck, and the Rockband guitar has solo buttons. its amazing |
Muckraker Posts: 333 Joined: 3 Jan 2008 | Guitar Hero III for me. When it comes to GH3 I don't care about characters and visuals, I just like to jam to my favorite songs. I will admit the multiplayer is not as good as GH2 but I generally don't do that. I think Rockband is good when you have a ton of friends but it's playing single that I don't like. Bass is just a watered down guitar and I can't play drums and I wouldn't be caught dead singing. The soundtrack is incredibly calm, which doesn't sound as fun or appropriate, versus Guitar Hero's fun adrenaline rush. Don't get me wrong, I like calm music but only at the right times. |
Beat Writer Posts: 149 Joined: 13 Dec 2007 | Rock band rock band rock band. The only good song in GH3 is Rock you like a Hurricane. Also, the BS about not using the guitar hero controllers on the PS3 is annoying and I be angry bout that |
Press Junketeer Posts: 483 Joined: 5 Jan 2008 | I only have Guitar Hero III, so I may not be in a position to say much. Yeah, that 7th tier wall is annoying. Some of the songs are boring to play (Cherub Rock, Kool Thing). And some songs downright SUCK (My Kiss, Raining Blood) But other than that, GHIII is a pretty solid game. Unfortunately, the first flaw is enough to kill the game on Hard mode. But I don't see the complaint that the setlist in GHIII is bad. There are songs for everybody who listens to any rock. Electronica, Metal, Punk, Blues, Classic, et cetera. And how is the Rock Band setlist better? I'm not trying to be mean to Rock Band, but they chose "Should I Stay or Should I Go" over any other Clash song. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1864 Joined: 13 Dec 2007 | Rock Band, hands down. Better to look at, listen to, and play. You might say "Hey, that's just because you can get back at that guy who crushed you at Goldeneye by getting 100% singing Maps on hard" and I would reply with a quaint "Maybe, but also because social or 'party' gaming is an escalating fad, and Rock Band is catching on to it and getting great results by providing a fun multi-player game that's addictive and socially acceptable." |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1196 Joined: 10 Nov 2007 | Rock Band has the better playlist, but for £190 they can fuck right off. |
News Room Contributor Posts: 1876 Joined: 21 Feb 2008 | Hmm, I had a narky reply about the £190 figure that keeps getting thrown around, then I checked more closely. Game: £50 Total: £240 (EDIT: WHAT THE FUCK?!) I want this game, but I'm going to have to think long and hard if I want it that much. |

For £240 pounds I could have a Wii...or a second-hand PS3.Or 4 brand new GH3 bundles. |

Apparently, it's already sold a couple million copies. |

That's true, but many of those will have been in the US, where the damn game costs half as much. Basically, EA are asking me to shell out nearly close to what I paid for my Xbox 360. I'm actually quite upset by this. It's not so much the game itself, it's the feelings of excitement and anticipation as the release date crept ever closer have now been soured. It was like looking forward to Christmas when I was a kid and price gouging has spoiled that for me. Thanks a bunch EA. |

Its not EA who distributes the game in the U.K., and so its not their fault. Go complain to the distributors about the price. |

Yes it is. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 108 Joined: 15 Apr 2008 | Rock band, because of how you can download songs. There are a lot more songs for Rock Band than Guitar Hero. And although you can also download songs to guitar hero, they have only released about 10 songs I think. I live in Europe and I cant wait for Rock Band to be released. |
News Room Contributor Posts: 1876 Joined: 21 Feb 2008 | Whereabouts in Europe to you live? Because Rock Band is apparently going to be even more expensive on the continent. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 72 Joined: 21 Mar 2008 | Guitar hero. Songs have more gameplay, Rock band songs are the popier, simpler songs the bands have put out. Examples : tom sawyer After that, most of the other songs are pop songs anyway (maps, learn to fly, in bloom (partially) ,reptillia, here it goes again, creep). Yes, these are pop-rock songs, but they are still pop songs. There are very few songs that I would rate as "awesome" songs to play, That come with the disc. Enter sandman, and run to the hills. I am not going to buy a £90 - £70 product (assuming I only buy the disc and the drums, since I have the guitar, and I am not going to pay £40 to sing. I can do that with the song and a lyric sheet, which is free) so I can play 2 songs. the downloadables are good, but even then, they aren't the right songs by the band. They released a judas priest album, but Painkiller would have been the only one I'd want. (I'm a masochist that way). I'd get sweet leaf, working man, march of the pigs, greatful dead pack, beetoven C#, and supernaught. That's still 16 songs, and 14 of them, I have to pay extra. There's also very little variety, or interesting songs. It's always the same riff. It's like a job. Guitar hero 3 had a lot more variety (from rain blood to sunshine of your love and black magic woman) and previous titles had other really good and varied pieces in them (jessica, primus) |

Completely irrelevant. Question isn't "Guitar Hero franchise VS. Rock Band franchise". Definitely a point++ for Harmonix though. |
