Free Running may be useful, but with Axe Proficiency, you'll find it easier to rack up XP again, lessening the gap between levels. Oh, and I can't get into the mall, as it's all Heavily Barricaded. I am in a building close to it though. |

You should find the roster of members from a few pages back in this thread. It's got our profile ID numbers so just view your profile and swap the profile numbers. That's how I added everyone. I'm having a pad run with that "finding probability" crap so won't make the mall for a couple days yet I imagine. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1751 Joined: 3 Mar 2008 | Uhh, how do you play this game? I'm new, and I just emptied all my bullets (soldier) into a zombie that did not die. Help? |
Muckraker Posts: 315 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | Guns are only worthy after you have any and all related proficiencies. Go axe first (best dmg/toHIT/AP) until you have all the firearm proficiencies, you then have the choice of lots of damage that you will have to scavenge for bullets/shells later or the axe. Axes can be found in fire stations and some other places (check the wiki). |

OK newbie. You are trapped in Malton, a zombie infested town that requires you to survive by the skin of your teeth. To move around, use the map in the left top corner. When you run out of ammo go to a police station (make sure it's safe) and enter it. If its too highly barricaded then you can't get in. Search for buildings (unless you have free-running) that are Very Strongly Barricaded. When inside a resource building (hospitals, warehouses, police offices, malls, etc.) you can click [Search] to look in the building for supplies. Have fun and try not to become a HARMANZ HAMBAGAZZZ! Copy Clerk Posts: 89 Joined: 2 May 2008 | Oh yeah FYI I'm hanging around in Roftwood. It is most likely the BEST place for resources in the game. 1 largly defended mall and plenty of other people. Lots of zombie groups too so plenty of XP. And the Nichols mall fell yesterday to the RRF. |

Paperboy Posts: 24 Joined: 25 Apr 2008 | Asleep in St Augustine Church in Stanburry Village. As soon as I can find a building I can enter that has a straight shot to the mall, I'll be free running in. St. Augustine Church and the adjacent Catherine General Hospital are both at VSB. Anyone barricaded outside in the area should make their way there. Can anyone tell me the local radio frequency? For new players: hand-to-hand weapons are your friends, specifically the knife and fire axe. Once you have the associated proficiencies, you do a fair amount of damage consistently with a decent hit%. I personally like them better than guns due to the lack of having to hunt for ammo. If you find one of them while searching a building, I highly recommend you pursue their skills. The only real difference is that when you get their branches of the unarmed tree maxed out, knife has a 10% better hit%, but does 1 less damage than the fire axe. It basically comes down to preference and availability. I found my knife in a mall (don't know if it spawns anywhere else), and I know fire axes can be found in fire stations, junkyards, and warehouses. Before I forget, EVERY character should purchase Free Running at some point at least semi-early in their survivor career. However, getting combat skills -for aspiring hunters- or Necrotech skills -for aspiring revivifiers- first helps increase experience gain and shortens the time between levels, as L4Y Duke said above, and should likely take precedence. |
Muckraker Posts: 315 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | I actually have a zed alt in the far flung parts of the city, ShadeOfRed. He started same time as my humans, and has since fallen behind in XP and levels. Stick with human if you want XP. You have to know where the horde is to get anywhere with the zeds. 15-40% to hit cade for 1XP I'll go with attacking zeds, thx. Wish I had Dead Rising here... But you do bring up a good point: We should consider the barricade situation around important areas. We needn't take malls down to VSB, but getting adjoining buildings to that will help newbies and free-running travelers immensely. |
Muckraker Posts: 315 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | Wheeeeee. I have generator (no fuel) and a radio transmitter, but haven't figured out what I want to do yet. Will be hanging out near Nichol's Mall tonight, figuring out the plan tomorrow. |

Thanks for the tip. I now need to find a rez point and some ammos. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 677 Joined: 26 Mar 2008 | The pool cues are good HtH weapons for beginners, they do 2HP with a 20% chance of connecting (fireaxe is 3HP 10%, most are 2HP 10%). The downside is that they snap after a while. Available in all good sporting stores. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 89 Joined: 2 May 2008 | To all you people who say that you want to go with HtH feats first, you fail. The fastest way of gaining xp is to hit someone and then heal them with FAK's. That or just become a zombie and go to a cemetary and ignore the Sacred Grounds Policy and kill the zombies. If they don't get up then the zombies there must have not been getting on for a bit and just put their zombie there to get revived, walked away, and never got back on. That or they are zombie-starters and want to find the person who revived them and kill them. And also anti-ZKer groups barely exist and are mostly not big. <- Fastest way possible to grind XP |
Paperboy Posts: 24 Joined: 25 Apr 2008 | Thank you, Lemony, for the expose on why we suck. Anyway: As of posting this Brome and Stribling Library are both at VSB. As Stribling is adjacent to SW mall corner, makes an excellent entrance point, or just a good spot to get out of the zeds. |

Ermmm, HtH feats will help you hit the person you are going to heal more often. Nice contradiction there. |
Web Developer Posts: 181 Joined: 6 Jun 2007 | No need to declare 'the one true path' on gaining xp and start entrenching positions. Just know what gets you XP and take advantage of situations. Me, I've swung my axe maybe 5 times. All my XP is from healing - made 120xp yesterday (and emptied myself of FAKs again). Admittedly it was a 'lucky strike' finding the Police Station just after zombies dropped the barricades and bit everyone inside. Over 30 people with 4pts of damage each... if only I had more FAKs! At the very least read the 'First Day in Malton' section in the wiki (wiki.urbandead.com). |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 677 Joined: 26 Mar 2008 | I have a radio but every channel I seem to tune it to is utter sh1te. I've looked at the Wiki to see if anything stands out and it is currently tuned to the Malton Emergency Network (I think - 26.26); which isn't giving me much. Anyone got a frequency they'd recommend (for useful information that is, and not half-hourly spam about the Holy Crocodile)? |
Muckraker Posts: 315 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | Most I listen to is regional, and I forget to change the channel. I just picked up a radio transmitter and generator, but haven't done anything with them yet. I'll let you guys know when I put it down, and will be letting some people (I'm lazy) know where it is. I'll post the freq on here. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 471 Joined: 22 Apr 2008 | Speaking as a heavily-armed soldier lurking in the building with at least 60 other survivors, I don't think Nichols Mall is going to fall for a while. The number of zombies attacking it has been steadily decreasing for the last week, while the number of survivors has grown. Right now the zombies are extremely outnumbered. Something like three to one is my estimate. As for how to get XP fast: I've just been going out with pistols and shotguns and blowing away zombies. I can usually get enough XP for another level within two days. Sometimes less. Good radio frequencies would be useful. While I do have a couple radios with interesting chatter on them, they're tuned to stations that I suspect are being broadcast from the far side of the city. Or something like that. I keep on getting reports on military actions in some suburb that isn't anywhere near me. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1015 Joined: 16 Jan 2008 | Yeah, Nichols seems to be doing well. I took out a couple of zombies today, leaving about 19. But there are about 90 other corpses out there, so if they all decide to stand up... we're stuffed. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 67 Joined: 10 Apr 2008 | Well, if the 'Pists will have me, I'll throw my hat in the ring for joining the Zombie defence. I don't know about "respected", but I'm definitely a member of the forums. Peter McGrady - 1234292 - JC123 If I'm in I'll head over asap, but I might be a while, no idea where I am at current. I'm running 4 alts (Scientist, Army, Civ & Zombie), can't access my character's locations now - to reduce traffic they limit each IP address to 160 hits each 24hrs, and running 4 alts that goes each day without fail, so I'm in mandatory sleep mode for the meantime. I'm likely to ditch my Scout alt since he's lowest, but he's already around Stanbury Village so probably the most use to the group for the moment. Might wait 'till my main is closer before I get rid of him. To sum up the speed reading I've done over the last 12 pages, we're basically all low-ish levels, and based in the general area around the Nichols Mall in Stanbury Village, and Mockridge Heights, correct? I could only see a list of about 10-20 people last updated on page 8 or 9, is that the full list? I couldn't see anything else formal either (i.e. a HQ, radio freq, a no-UltraJoe or other zombies access forum for meta-gaming, etc), is there anything that's not in this thread I should know about? Let me know if I'm cool to join and where to head to, and PM me if there's anything important I need to know that's gotta be kept out of Zombie hands. |
Paperboy Posts: 24 Joined: 25 Apr 2008 | Well, I'm back in SE Nichols after trying to help clear out Went NT. It had about 12 zombies inside and 20 outside when I was there, so any hunters in the area should go there for zombie killing. If anyone needs easy Exp, I'm at about 25 HP, so come make with the healing. |
Muckraker Posts: 315 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | Hey JC123 and other entrants, I've been lazy about updating the list, but also been trying to determine the best course of action for lurkers (those who want to join, and make the join post their first). Up to the last update I've been reading entrants' old posts to make a judgment call. However I'm only able to put so much time into logistics of this thing. Any volunteers who are already on the list wanna chime in to help keep it up to date? Current approved members: UD Handle - Char ID - Escapist Handle |

Ah. Right then. Anyone else need healing? I've got a first-aid kit that I don't know what to do with. Lemony, thanks for the advice. I shall retune one of my radios posthaste. |

I tried heading south to Mockingridge Heights but ran into a whole block-load of Zeds, so I attacked a couple and retreated to a safer area. They seem to be pushing north.
Question: I'm just about to clock over to 100XP, should I invest in free running, basic firearms or that axe proficiency skill? I have a fire axe I use religiously and a shotgun that I can barely hit anyone with.
