It sure does - Chess is for pro's |
Muckraker Posts: 256 Joined: 24 Feb 2008 | FPS, I guess, as long as there's some strategy and socializing in there. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 6974 Joined: 28 Nov 2007 | I prefer RPGs, because I like having my games with epic stories and leveling up my characters. That's right, I like leveling up characters. Big whoop, wanna fight about it? |

Preference :) - RPG games are my personal second favorite. So, no fight there :) |

Good. :) I love quoting Family Guy, BTW, hence the last sentence. |

Seconded. But in all seriousness, FPSs. Why? Because I'm the type of guy who likes a a decent reason to kill things. And makes it fun. - A procrastinator |

Thirded. I guess FPS for the reason stated above. But I do like RPGs as well. It's tough. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 398 Joined: 8 Oct 2007 | Well I think each game has it's appropriate time and place. When I'm angry theres nothing better than shooting something all to hell. When I want to escape reality a RPG always seems the way to go. So it really comes down to my mood or frame of mind. But I mainly play FPS...I guess that says a lot about my self...hehe ^_^ |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 4066 Joined: 24 Apr 2008 | RTS the meeting of the minds, the skill unrivaled, apart from the ability to click with speed and a decent graphics card, its relly a conduit, your will versus the opponent's the crafting of a strategy, thinking on the fly, and... if you keep at it, you can be blessed with the greatest honor of all The Pit Climb weve all felt the feeling, your dead, the opponent knows it, the universe has decided, the stamp is on the folder but your will is iron and your fury and inferno you play for 2 hours straight of near perfect gameplay and win, upon which you let out a visceral roar and scare your brother in the next room... be it an FPS, WoW (war-song gulch does this sometimes) its... *sniff* beautiful |

Beat Writer Posts: 147 Joined: 12 Feb 2008 | First person shooters are my favorite when played on the PC. I could largely care less for them on consoles. The speed, the control, the precision and the graphics really sell this genre. Of course, having my two favorite games of all time on the PC helps. You just can not beat everybody's emotionally oblivious mute, Gordon Freeman. Third person shooters on the other hand are where it is at on consoles. This genre has never transitioned will to the mouse and keyboard very well. To make things worse, you simply cannot get a controller worth a darn. Some are better than others but nothing tops the Dualshock in my mind, not even the Gamecube controller. |
Muckraker Posts: 283 Joined: 20 Jan 2008 | RPG or RTS, even through I suck at RTS's. Too afraid to spend money/resources. FPS's and Fighers are fun, but only when other people are around to play with you. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2465 Joined: 3 Apr 2008 | I like driving games preferably where you can break things thats why i looooooooooooooooove the burnout series i also like boarding games like SSX and tony hawks games. there really easy to pick up the controller and play, have good music and can be a good party game (You shot a smallharmlesskitten is still the best message i have seen on CS) |

I think I'm the same. This should be "Best genres" or "Best style of game" btw. I came in expecting a discusion about halo 2 game types. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 59 Joined: 2 Apr 2008 | I guess I am an FPS junkie. I've fallen out of the loop with my PC lately, the only real new title I bought for it lately was Kane's Wrath, that and I haven't bothered getting any shiny new components in a while. As such I guess I've restricted myself to my 360, meaning the majority of my time is spent hopping from shooter to shooter. Taking a wild stab in the dark, I'm guessing you mean "Personal favourite", as there is no real way of testing the "best" genre. If you did it by popularity it could fall under FPS, maybe sports games or RPGs. Edit: Sorry if I've used too many howevers and "in terms of" - I'm in a hungover stupor at the moment, and haven't really woken up. As such I spent about 2 minutes between each word staring at my radiator. I feel one of my lengthy posts comming on, so... I'll carry on. Although I spend most of my time playing FPS games I would actually rather be playing a really well thought out RPG. I'll admit it loud and proud here, I am a Geek. Not a nerd, Geek. I wear a Halo 3 t-shirt on occasion, listen to Iron Maiden, study computer games programming, play tabletops on occasion and get rat-arsed on a relativly nightly basis. The immersion and depth in a good RPG is enough to absorb a player for hours on end. I spent 12 hours playing Fallout 2 once, 10 on KotR II. So I'd have to say in terms of engrossing a player RPGs certainly take the biscuit in terms of being the best. They do, however, often require a certain level of attention, one far greater than a shooter and to those ends often mean it's not too easy to play after a good night out. An FPS on the otherhand is excellent for such a predicament. So, I could argue that in terms of enjoyment and quick thrills an FPS will keep you on edge, keep you laughing at times when that corpse flies past in an undignified mannor and is something that doesn't require as much thought. I think I see where I was going with that, which I apologise for. I guess it leads me to conclude: FPS-RPG! |
Beat Writer Posts: 170 Joined: 11 Jan 2008 | Just about every genre has it's place, but if I had to pick only one genre to play for the rest of my existence I'd go with the Metroids and current-era Castlevanias, whether 2D or 3D. Something about being able to explore such a massive planet or castle, knowing half the spots you pass by can later open up into massive realms of their own, is very satisfying to my inner cartographer. The music is also set at very high standards (Victorian Haze currently holds the honor of my favorite gaming song), even if the plot is sometimes shallower than what I'm used to. |

People don't like hardcore-style CTF much these days because it takes way more skill than most other gametypes, meaning new players get destroyed when they try to pick it up and have to invest too much time in the game to get decent. However, I've yet to encounter a game that can match the excitement of a close match of CTF in UT (except maybe Double Domination from UT2003, which was awesome and very underappreciated). |
Press Junketeer Posts: 458 Joined: 23 Mar 2008 | RPG fan at heart. I love the leveling up aspect, improving your character until they can rival gods. I also love a good story, which RPG's tend to have. I also love to read, so go figure. FPS and TPS come in at second, because sometimes you just want to blow some heads off. I'm also probably the only person who actually prefers console controls to a mouse. It's so much easier to control in my opinion. |

Holy crap! Someone else who liked DD! I didn't play it much because there weren't any servers for it but DOM-Conduit is one of my favorite maps in any fps. FPS games are my bag, especially the Quake/UT style ones, but a good PCRPG is fun too. |

They're easy to control, you have 2 buttons, left and right click, the puzzles are always imaginative and the story is usually very deep and entertaining and by the way, by point and click I don't mean those crappy escape the room games I mean games like Broken Sword and Myst. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1309 Joined: 12 Oct 2007 | Action adventure games like Ninja gaiden or Devil May Cry. There are enough games with a decent story that the ocassional game with a vapid one is not so bad unlike it is in other genres where it seems to be the exact opposite. |

Arrrgh. Stealth games annoy the hell outta me. It's always the same, like on Splinter Cell, where you get to the end and something glitches, you fail the mission and have to start again. >.< The ONLY 'stealthy' game series I enjoy is Hitman |
Beat Writer Posts: 158 Joined: 4 Feb 2008 | RPG and RTS for the same reason... You build(or work) yourself stronger and stronger through clever work, unlocking more and more possibilities to bring doom upon your enemies, becoming in the end an unstoppable force of destruction. I also love a good story. In this regards RPGs and fps are best, but only the single player aspects. Multiplayer fps is a bit lame methinks... Too steep a learning curve for me, and too repetitive gameplay. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2934 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | The FPS is my favorite genere. If you add some RPG elements (I.E. you need to purchase guns, level up to increase stats) we've got a winning combo! And stealth every now and again, though i havn't played one in a while. |

This has been done. It's called GunZ and, as the name suggests, it sucks. On the topic of what the best gaming genre is, I'd say I honestly don't know. And I have to admit that I've never thought of it before. |
Paperboy Posts: 25 Joined: 7 Feb 2008 | I don't know if this applies to the gamers on this forum, but most people tend to play the genres that they are best at and thus these genres become their favourite. For me its slightly different. I am pretty poor at shoot-em-ups, (especially vertical scrollers for some reason) but I absolutely adore them. Maybe I am a masochist, but the feeling I get when I have completed an insanely tough shmup or finally get the high score after years of trying beats any other feeling in videogames. |
Beat Writer Posts: 183 Joined: 26 Feb 2008 | I like FPSRPG's. Alone there really good, but together there my fine Columbine 8-Ball (Thats a large amount of crack cocaine). The action of FPS's and the costumizeing ablity of RPG's are so much fun together and complement each other so well. If I hade to pick one it would be RPG's where everyone stands in a line and fights. Love um'! |

Yes, GunZ, the third-person FPS. Seriously, I can see how one might get confused about what is or isn't and RPG or something as it's a rather ambiguous category. Also because RPG fans are fucking crazy, I include both FF wackos and OCD CRPG types like myself in this statement. First person shooter is a pretty cut-and-dried category. There are a couple of borderline cases (Condemned) but mostly you can just use the checklist implicit in the names itself: If the answer to both is yes, it's probably a FPS. Here's a hint: GunZ won't pass that test. That said, you're right on one point--FPS/RPG has been done. It's called Deus Ex and is probably the best game ever made. |

Just being curious, but id like to get a rough idea of the most 'loved' game type. Such as RTS, FPS, RPG.. ect.
Any reasons why?
Personally - FPS is my preferred style. Maybe because I'm purely a 'I like to shoot things with my boomstick' gamer.. who knows?
