In the last maybe 2 years I've played a lot of different games. I can count on one hand the number I've seen the ending to. I don't know if it's because the games are too long, or my attention span is too short, or a mixture of both. Add to the fact that the vast majority of game endings I have seen have been shitty and anticlimactic, and I find my motivation to finish these days disappears as soon as another game catches my eye. I was wondering how many others out there share this... condition.

Anyway, since I've got nothing better to do and I can't sleep, I will list all the games I can think of I've played in the past 12-24 months, and why I stopped. Perhaps some of you can tell me which are worth pursuing till the end and which to leave buried.

In no particular order:

Oblivion
I don't think anyone's finished this. As in done everything... Played for a month when I first got it, then played for another month about a year later. Got to about lvl 20, didn't finish the main quest.

Doom3
Completed!

Tomb Raider Legend
Got to the level where you start in the burnt house in England, lost interest. Am I near the end?

Tomb Raider Anniversary
Got to the second or third Egypt level when another game distracted me, but I really want to finish this one because I want to see what they did with the last few levels. Can't find the motivation though... and I'm a bit stuck because I've lost the flow.

Psychonauts
Yeah I know I'll be crucified for admitting this here but got to the Suburbs level inside the madmans head before losing focus (for the second time). Pretty sure this ones worth finishing!

Quake4
Just got the rocketlauncher upgrade that lets you bend the path of your rockets, need to fight a seemingly difficult boss (only tried twice though). I reckon since I just got it I have to use the rockets from round a corner but it seemed really clunky and I couldn't be bothered quickloading again and again...

STALKER
Fantastic game, really liked the atmosphere and the gunfights. Got to the bit just after Red Forest when all these ghosts attack, I had no idea where I was going or what I was doing and after dying in the same area for the 5th or 6th time saved it and haven't been back since. I also had the main plot twist spoilt by reading a thread I shouldn't have, which hasn't helped.

FEAR
Done!

FEAR Extraction point
I got to the last fight where the helicopter is about to pick me up and all the soldiers and armoured robots come out one after the other. I know its just a matter of loading it up and finishing that last fight but I've seen pretty much all of it now so whats the point?

Prey
Got to the last end boss, even worked out how to beat it but died about 3 or 4 times in the process so thought fuckit, I got you beat - I don't actually have to do it.

Metroid Prime
Completed twice!

Metroid Prime 2
Completed (just once, no way I'm going through that again!)

Paper Mario Thousand yr door
I lent it to someone and forgot about it, I had one more thingy to collect. Will probably never see that game again without a substantial effort to track it down.

Morrowind
Got lost in Vivec and couldn't be bothered with it anymore. Also, I think that was around when I bought Oblivion so I just migrated over.

GTA3
Finished all story missions, didn't go for 100%

GTA Vice City
Same as above

GTA San Andreas
Got to the third island, started doing the Casino missions and can't remember why but lost interest. Then a few years later I re-bought it on PC, got up to the fucking mandatory learning to fly mission and found it impossible to do on a keyboard, so will wait until I get around to getting a joypad to finish this one (I'm determined to one day!)

Supreme Commander
Not sure why but this one just couldn't hold my interest past the second or third mission in whichever campaign I started. Might try to return to it one day but nothing is motivating me to yet. Not particularly bothered about multiplayer.

Final Fantasy 12
Borrowed a PS2 for this, got to the not-elves with rabbit ears village and was already well into my hundredth eye-roll at the fantasy clichés and rubbish dialogue, as well as the stupid amounts of pre-reading on which chests you had to not open to get good stuff when I had to give it back. Was going to abandon it pretty soon though anyway.

Neverwinter nights
Got quite far but the story sucked huge elephant cock and I lost interest. Wasted more of my time on that than I'd have liked.

Call of Cthulu: Dark corners of the Earth
I'm about maybe a quarter of the way through this. I want to finish because I love the atmosphere but every time I start to play there are always better games vying for my attention (currently GTA4, obviously)

Ninja Gaiden Black
Oh for fucks sake! I couldn't even master those flame-shuriken throwing brown ninjas you meet on level 4 or 5, and I knew what to expect from the rest of the game so rather than invest the gaming hours it would've required to nail the game (hours not playing other titles) I just gave up. I feel absolutely no shame in declaring this.

Far Cry Instincts
Got to the very last boss, only to discover he is invincible! Yeah, great going playtesters... hope someone got sacked for that one. Would've actually finished that one too.

The Witcher
Only just started this. It had a great start, defending that castle, but now I'm in the first village and the pace has slowed right down. The vast majority of reviews I've read assure me that if I can get past this lacklustre few hours and poorly translated dialogue it picks up and rewards you. If I could put up with the Oblivion dialogue, I can certainly handle this mess. I don't want to abandon this one but.... well, it's in my nature. Feel free to try and persuade me either way if you've nothing better to do.

Oh yeah, forgot the Steam games...

Bioshock
Ugh... what a fantastic build-up, excellently executed twist, deep and atmospheric storyline, great graphics and ambiance, all followed by possibly the greatest end-game letdown I've personally ever experienced. After "The Twist" I could only play for a little bit longer as it had totally lost its heart. I abandoned it, and will probably never go back. It does serve as a fantastic "what not to do" lesson to others though, so credit due for that.

Half-Life 2 & Episode 1
Finished. Was getting samey though so am waiting a while before getting episode 2

Overlord
Got to the bit just after the sandworms, but the shittyness of said sandworms and that whole section in general took the pacing out of what had up until then been a very enjoyable game, and I lost interest. What were they thinking?!?

Painkiller Gold Edition
Oh this is awesome I love it! Unfortunately, a bug happened somewhere in the military base and all my saves somehow got corrupted, so I had to start again goddammit!. Not abandoned but haven't played in a long while.

SiN Episodes: Emergence
Was enjoying this but I think I came across one too many "where do I go next" bits and then a better game, probably Half-life 2, stole my fickle attention. Can't remember where I got up to. But man, those tits.....

Civ 4 Beyond the Sword
To this date I've only completed ONE game. I play on Noble on normal speed but they just seem to last too long. I have several games that I've started which I keep meaning to get back to, but I always end up just starting another new one.

Titan Quest % Immortal throne
Went through it once, then found out to get to the "real" game with the "real" loots, Epic, I'd have to go through it all again. Well, fuck that noise! Deserves a mention for enabling you to collect your purples without having to deal with 39 other dickheads though.

X3 Reunion
Mentioned this in another thread: Can't get into it. I really, really want to, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of in-built tutorial and I don't relish the thought of having to read through loads of forum-text just to learn the basics. I do enough of that already! Shame though because I'm pretty sure I'd love this game.

So there is my list of shame. I'm sure there are others I've forgotten about.

Are games too long? In my opinion, maybe they are. I think I'd prefer shorter games that cost less to make, and therefore less to buy, could be released more often because they take less time to make, and maybe I would actually complete more of them that way.

Am I the only one that is like this?

No, you're not the only one who hasn't finished a game in a snarling zombie dog's age.

FOLKLORE, PS3
- This was my first PS3 game and I was really into it for a while and then I got to the third world on Keats' side and got really quite annoyed that i had to play each world twice. Once I got to the fourth world as Ellen, I pretty much gave up.

RATCHET AND CLANK, PS3
- Okay, I really was going to finish this game, but I got stuck with the stupid space pirate ship and it was getting so ridiculous I turned it off and just left it.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, PS3
- Not even totally sure why I attempted this game. Gameplay blew, Sonic was really hard to control, and the "missions" were... indescribeable.

LEGEND OF ZELDA: PHANTOM HOURGLASS (DS)
-Yahtzee pretty much summed up my thoughts on this game. I really didn't see how this "breathed new life" into the zelda series, and while it was cute and fun enough for me to get through the ocean king's temple twice, when I realized how many times I had to go back there, I literally tossed my copy of the game against the wall. SO UNRELENTINGLY FRUSTRATING.

FINAL FANTASY XII: REVENANT WINGS (DS)
- I swore I'd finish this, but once the game got into forced stealth, I kinda stopped playing it. I don't think I'm missing much though. I might go back later and try to finish it..

It feels like games are trying too hard to be difficult, and some completely shoot past "challenging" and straight on to ridiculous controls, or just inane AI. As for what game to finish, I'll just poke at your FFXII comment as I haven't played the other games you did. I honestly stuck to doing hunts, and when I got back into the plot, I was rather lost, but the hunts and battles (if you took control of your party leader and not let the gambits run) was pretty exciting. Also, if you ever challenged the Hell Wyrm in the Sochen Cave Palace ... there's a really hard boss that takes like ... hours to defeat. So there is more to do there than is present in the story, but ... all in all, I didn't mind it.

.....The poor game developers they just can't win with you people. It's too long! It's too short! It's too easy! It's too hard! They respond to what people are saying about games that they have put out. You need to take all games of the same class into consideration when thinking about length and difficulty.

Make up your mind people.

The boss in Farcry isn't invincible. You need to fire the rocket on the Heli at his when he is on the turret. Then he jumps down and you fight him man to man. It is hard though.

I couldn't tell you every game I have yet to beat but lets just say it is around 50%.

I rarely finish a game (and by finish I mean the main storyline, not all the side missions/extras). I usually get bogged down trying to get everything and about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way in I somehow get distracted, and then the next thing I know a month of two has gone by. Then when I try to pick up the game again, I've forgotten what I've done, what the controls are (or how to have control at the skill level required for this point in the game), or what needs to be accomplished next. I then contemplate starting over, but the prospect of another 20-30 hours to get to the same point I was already at is overwhelming, so the game gets shelved. Sad, but it has happened far too many times.

What I need to do is not be so concerned about getting everything and just focus on having fun and going along for the ride. When I do this, there is a good chance that I may finish the game. Otherwise, 9 out of 10 times, I don't ever see the ending.

Not that I don't get my moneys worth out of most of the games I buy, but I spend so much time/energy on the extras that I lose sight of the main game. I hesitate to complain, because I like that these extras are put in the games, but I need to understand that I just don't have the attention span needed to get all of them most of the time. A conundrum I probably won't ever find a solution too that satisfies both my desire to get everything and my desire to see my way to an ending.

No, it's definitely a glitch. I was so frustrated by that fight I ended up going to GameFAQs and found this page: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox/file/917534/40938
which basically outlines what you have to do to avoid it, but apparently once you activate it there is no way of un-activating it, or something. Either way, by then I'd had enough of that fight so the game got abandoned.

Yeh, well, I've noticed I'm not finishing my games as much. When I was younger, I'd definately finish the game. Now... I finish most, but some.. like Oblivion: played a little, hated it with a passion, and traded it in. Other than that... nope. I finished my games, or am currently working through them (main story, not the side-quests).

I try to finish every game I get, because I really have little else to do around here, but 2 games do spring to mind,

Blacksite Area 51:
Just couldn't do it, it ran like crap on my machine and there were little to no options to get the game running better. Add that I felt it was just a poor game, I just couldn't bring myself to push through to the end :/.

Peggle:
Finished every bloody level and every challenge EXCEPT that get 750,000 points in one level, I can get 450,000 if I'm lucky. Eventually it turned me into a frothing lunatic so I thought it would be best if I just walked away, and apparently, after you do all the challenges, you have to beat all the levels again :(.

Apart from saints row that I just lost interest in (bit tacky and the characters are very hard to like). I finish the games I buy. Maybe you should research purchases more thoroughly so you don't end up wasting your money.

I don't know why but I'm one of those who get one game at a time and do not get a new one until the current is completed, but I never go for the full 100% like the flags in Assassins Creed (which my brother ended up doing when I was away to London)

I'll admit to rarely finishing games too. And it's not generally a mark of how long or difficult the game is.

For example, I never finished Final Fantasy X-2, which as games go is neither difficult, nor overly long. I did however finish Soul Calibur III which *is* fairly involved and require a higher degree of skill.

I've found that it tends to depend on a confluence of the game's ability to hold my interest and whether I have other distractions at the time. Final Fantasy X-2 wasn't a really good game so I got bored easily. Another game that I loved but never finished was Puzzle Quest, simply because I started raiding WoW and just didn't have much leisure time left over.

The important metric shouldn't be whether you finished the game, but whether you enjoyed as much of it as you played. Perhaps it's why I like the GTA series so much. The overarching plotline is fun and interesting, but just hopping on for a hour or so to drive around and blow up things is fun it it's own way.

I noticed this, well, try to no longer wait. The ending of Episode 2 floored me, totally worth playing through, and not just because of the ending either, some of the fights and story on the way to getting there, take this with a grain of salt I might be a fan boy, but I thought compared to most games out there, it was subtle yet epic at the same time (as opposed to cliche and epic at the same time).

Holy crap you can actually remember all of those games you've played.

I probably finish half of the games I play mostly because they only take me a few hours to finish.

I've actually completed all but the vampire cure quest and the last demon quest in Oblivion. But I don't have any expansion packs or addons... yet.

Lemme see... I'm a fairly casual gamer, and generally don't bother to work on finishing games unless I think they're really good. I bought five games near the beginning of the year, my most recent purchase. Of those five, I couldn't be bothered to finish FEAR, Bioshock, or Rome: Total War. (See the thread about "which RTS game should I buy" for why I couldn't finish that last one.) I also bought "Unreal Tournament" versions 1 and 2 and got stuck on a couple of really irritating levels in each, so I didn't finish each game. I have finished the main and most of the guild quests in Oblivion, which I find really enjoyable, if rather repetitive in some ways. Still, it pushed my buttons far more than any of the others.

In my opinion Oblivion is by far the best game out of all of those I've listed, and therefore made me want to put in the effort needed to finish it. It's not perfect by any means, but it pretty much shows what you'd expect: you get more play time out of what you'd consider to be a really good game than an average one. Not the most surprising result ever!

I suppose it depends on your definition of "finish." If you're referring to the main storyline/quest/game, then yes, I usually finish the games that I start playing *and if I don't, I'll inevitably comeback to it later*. If you're referring to completeing every side-quest, alternate story arch, and killing every single optional enemy and boss...well, no. Some games just throw a TON of extra things at you that you can do, and frankly, unless I'm really into the game, I usually feel the need for a change of pace and switch games before I finish all the "extra stuff".

Now, don't get me wrong, I like it when developers throw in extra goodies like that. However, as of recently I've found that I can afford to get games much more frequently than in, say, high school or college (or university, depending on your location). The ability to actually pick up a new game every few weeks sorta kills the desire to completely "finish" the ones I have.

I should probably stop doing that...

I usually beat my games and then continue to play them afterwards. Hell I beat OoT like 5 times. I even beat monster madness **shudders**

The only game I havn't completed that I would like to is Twilight Princess. I mean that fucking fishing minigame towards the end is such an ass pain. Currently I'm working on 100% completion for Brawl, which will NEVER get old.

Because I'm really, really lame and have a short attention span.

Sexual Harassment Panda:

Oh, but I do, generally. Most of the time it's not something about the general aspect of the game that gets covered in reviews that stops me finishing, it's just one particular arse of a boss, or one poorly designed level towards the end that is the trigger, when my attention is waning anyway. Or even just another game coming along, which is obviously no fault of the game I'm currently playing.

Snooder:
...started raiding WoW and just didn't have much leisure time left over.

Hehehe yeah, I hear you. That game was responsible on two separate occasions of totally halting all progress in all other games (and other leisure activities for that matter) until I knocked it on the head for good.

CanadianWolverine:

Well, remember this is over the last two years or so with a few borrowed from friends, and then factor in the fact that I spend what some would consider to be too much time gaming, which leaves me with less time to spend money on other endeavours, and it isn't so unbelievable. Oh and thanks for the recommendation, I'll probably make the Orange Box one of my next purchases :)

Logan9993:

OhGod, just the main bit in most cases. I see the optional extras as being just there for those that liked the game so much they wanted to continue playing after completing it, and still have something different to do without necessarily starting again.

I'm too cheap to buy many games I can't finish. :) That said, there are a few I haven't completed and likely have abandoned... though they're on the shelf just in case I change my mind.

Dead Rising; I got caught in a fork between three bosses (the cop lady, the survivalist family, and a third I can't recall) because I didn't level-grind enough earlier... so the story will end for my current game save at dawn of Day 3. Also, the firearm and vehicle controls drove me batty, and the final straw was a scratch on my disk that crashed the people-mover section. The basics are good and the story fascinating, but there's so much busted stuff too.

KotOR: yeah, break out the torches and pitchforks if you must, but after thirty hours of gameplay I got stuck on Tatooine (again because I moved on before levelling up) and got too frustrated. Me and RPGs don't agree much with each other. (Except Mass Effect and bioshock, oddly enough.)

Gears of War: finished the campaign on regular difficulty, no problem, but on Hardcore I'm hung up on General RAAM... and that fight's just not fun enough to keep sticking my anatomy into that grinder. Annoying that I'm so close, but I play for fun and not gamerpoints.

Dawn of War, Dark Crusade: I've almost finished as the Tau, but defeating a maxxed-out Eldar AI is more tedious than fun when my computer starts chugging thanks to the vast hordes on-screen. Maybe someday I'll go back and finish it.

I'm not counting Arcade titles; I buy those for shorter play in any case, though most of those I've played to the end as well come to think of it.

Ah, X3 entry problems. Know the feeling. My first game thoughts were:

Hey, this is cool.
So... What do I do?
Let's go over here.
Ohh! Red things! Get 'em!
Game Over.

*Leave for two weeks*

*repeat with slightly more efficiency, die*

*leave for one week*

*Return, actually get into the game.*

My advice would be do the first few missions, then (assuming you're a combat pilot) try and capture a pirate ship you like the look of. Small target is something of a gateway.

Adding to the above, it's odd how your viewpoint changes. I was once so obsessed with doing a game absolutely perfectly and getting everything possible out of it that I played Super Street Fighter 2 on the Sega Megadrive against all sixteen opponents on the hardest difficulty level until I'd completed the entire thing with thirty-two straight "perfects". It took me MONTHS. (It's possible, although very very very very hard indeed, if you use Vega. And obviously you can't use "save state" on an actual console game - if you take a single hit or block a special move, you've got to go back to the start and begin again!) Unfortunately there's no special "win" screen for getting that many perfects (although there is one for not losing a single round - it's a stylized picture of Deejay on a purple background with the SSF2 logo, if anyone's interested) - I guess the developers thought nobody would ever be that obsessive!

It's okay to not finish a game, I have a friend who has not finished a game since Ocarina of Time came out, and he's owned far too many games.

while i do agree with you that many of the games i have played recently have either bored me to death or pissed me off irreparably, i CAN say that i have beaten every single aspect of oblivion; every quest, every guild, and 3every storyline including shivering isles.

I finish games if I like them, pretty much always, as long as they have a vague campaign with story. Oblivion I finished absolutely EVERYTHING except for those damned quests that glitched (Damn you vampire hunters!) as I loved the game.

However, games like Dawn of War :Dark Crusade... My god, how aggravating was that campaign?

I'm stubborn as hell when it comes to finishing games, and even getting everything there is to get in them. Sure, I get distracted, but eventually I go back to a game, and even if I have to start over to relearn the controls, I'll do so... over and over until I finally finish it.

Had the same problem with FFXII. Just didn't hold my attention after a while. Got bored of the characters and plot, just my experience of it.
Got stuck on the same point in Tomb Raider Legend with the Bell and Excalibur, just google a guide for it. Found a comprehensive one that explained how glaringly obvious what you have to do is, despite not appearing so in game.

I'll agree with you finishing TR:Legend it's a wonderful ending, but if those are the only games you've played then get your hands on Portal it's only a few hours if your good with puzzles "or have access to game facts sites" then it's a great .... ya know what just watch Yahtzee's Orange Box review for a good explanation if you havn't yet.

I purchase, rent, and play tons of games. When I was younger I played to beat a game. I think I felt like it proved that I was good at something or because I enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment so much. When you are a kid there are not too many things that really make you feel that way.

Now that I am older I play for different reasons. I play to appreciate the game as a whole. How it was made, the physics, the story, the controls, etc... I will only take the time to finish a game if it really wows me. Other than that I own at least one top rated game of every genre I like so when the mood strikes me I can play that type of game. I rent games as they come out to see if the reviews are accurate. Then I go back to play whatever is my favorite of the week.
