How about feudal Japan? You can play as warring samurai who commit first-person sepuku when they fail at their mission and ninjas, who's first-person acrobatics are likened to "Mirror's Edge."

I think a Call of Duty where you get to play from both sides would be awesome. Show the humanity of soldiers regardless of politics or place of birth. China would be a good adversary (I know it has been done before in BattleField2). They have a very professional and dedicated army. A conflict between the US and China would be make for an epic game story, even without nukes.

French resistance? Sweet God Jesus! why these guys? Nevermind. I must say that I would most likely bet USA vs China type of conflict. Only thing that wasn't already done in WW2 fps games is a German Soldier as a main protagonist.

If you want resistance, try something jugoslavian, finnish, polish. That would be something quite fresh and epic.

The Call of Duty series is undergoing "4th installment syndrome". That's when a series starts to get cliche after being shaken down form more than a trilogy. Now, I liked the COD games. Sure they were WW2 games but they were still good, really really good. COD4 was also good, but after you take a series into modern times it's inevitable that future/space warfare is next. Which would suck, because there's really nowhere to go after space.

I think Call of Duty should stay in modern times. They just need to find someone other than the US or UK to play as. Stare at an atlas long enough and your bound to find someplace that made you say: "I wonder what a war would be like there?" Maybe instead of US Marines you play as...Israeli paratroopers, and instead of SAS commandos you play as...a French UN peace keeper and rather than a Red Army sniper you're...a Kosovo policeman turned soldier and the main antagonist is a group of mercs from South Africa or the Canadian mounted police or something.

There, I bet you want to see how that would turn out. Call of Duty 5: Global Strike. Rated M for intense violence, blood and gore, strong language...and partial nudity.

Treyarch is developing CoD5. not infinity ward.
they have shown no intrest in making a modern war game.
several sorces have acctually pointed to the idea that treyarch will attempt another return to the WW2 time frame with a campaign on the little used pacific front.

in any case, it will not be as good as CoD4 because it won't have the IW seal of aproval. consigning it to a lonesome fate as a 'cheap knock off'...

Seriously though, I have to agree wholeheartedly with ShyWinter. Going post-modern would be a mistake in my opinion, as it's been done by too many developers already. And as ShyWinter points out, why go post-modern anyway, when you have so many stories to pick up if you just look around. The US and UK aren't the only ones waging war in the world.

I would like to see a CoD game based in Africa (anyone who doesn't know of the conflicts therein might miss the point here, in that case, brush up your history knowledge.)

Imagine a Special Force Team (nationality doesn't really matter) sent to Africa to retrieve a hostage with political influence. If you know anything of the horrors that occur in these countries, you can imagine how great a game like CoD can portray and send a message to those playing. Games aren't necessarily shoot-kill-yay, and such scenarios would be much appreciated by the majority of gamers, i think. Especially bearing in mind that the average gamer is 28 years old.

That's what i'm hoping for, but i heard the same as Pyro Paul. Tryarch is developing CoD5, and so another WWII setting seems inevitable.

after all theres very little of the second World War left to do, the First World War would not translate well into a game, Gulf 1 and Veitnam were done by the conflict series, the Pennisular war was taken care of in Fields of Glory, and most other war games these days are based on current events, but there has never been a game to my knowledge that is set during the Korean War.

I'd be interested in a "near future" setting.

Okay, actually, what I REALLY want is a Warhammer 40,000 shooter that plays like CoD4, but that's a little outside the realm of what it'd be reasonable to expect.

Still, it'd be nice to see a vision of a near-future world, where both the weapons and the defenses against them continue to grow in sophistication and effectiveness. I'm not talking infantry-portable railguns, or force fields here - more things like self-guiding antipersonnel rounds, Metal Storm weaponry, airbust directed flechette grenade launchers, false-colour heat vision, gun-mounted cameras, and battlefield intelligence uplinks, like from Ghost Recon 2.

but that suggestion about present-day Africa is pretty badass too....

Or, you know, we could just stick to the near future idea.

The whole idea of taking CoD back to WW2 really annoyed me. They had just managed to pull themselves away from that time period. Its about time they leave it behind and start hacking away at the ankles of a new time period.

If they hadnt already confirmed the time period for the new CoD i would say they should just keep it in modern day because that gave some really good gameplay and just a nice break from the Nazis.

I had thought that the whole point of Call of Duty was strictly WWII(not saying that the next one should be--dear God, no), and when I heard #4 was modern I assumed it was primarily a sales
gimmick--attaching the name of a well-liked game to one that was completely different.

Admittedly, I have never played CoD 4, and thus have no idea what the game is like.

All I'm saying is that I think they should retire the series and start anew.

Nickson: CoD4 is easily one of the best FPS games I have ever played, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys FPS games, because it is fething awesome.

The thing is, I agree with you - I think the CoD series needs to be retired now. Somehow, I really doubt that they'll ever be able to top CoD4, especially not if they go back to WW2.

The fact that it's such a massive source of inspiration for second-rate games kind of undermines the significance of the entire conflict. World War 2 has been cheapened by a string of below-par games, and even the good ones struggle to bring any real originality or flair to it any more. There needs to be a good long break from making WW2 games, until the games industry is mature enough to be able to do it properly.
